to be shocked to hear Mama Mia described as "chavvy"?

I overhead a conversation today, between a mother and her teenage daughter, it was a loud one about which highbrow books they were going to read this summer (note, going to, not had) You know, the kind of conversation which is designed to be overheard.

Anyway daughter then said she'd like to see Mama Mia and mother said "oh no you're not a XXX Chav" naming the town we were in. Not sure what the definition of chav is, but surely her behaviour/views were far more uncouth than any popular film? I loved Mama Mia, have read some of those books and lived in the town in question most of my life. Worst part is that from what she said, I understand the mother is an English teacher in a secondary school in the town. I feel absolutely distraught that someone could have such a low opinion of her pupils and that poss my DC's will be going to her school. I'm proud of my town and it's decent working class people.

Anyone who uses 'chav' in that sort of context is a brainless twit. As you say, shame she's a teacher. Mind you, if she's that thick she's probably a very ho-hum teacher and won't have much influence over the kids she teaches, thankfully.

I think Mama Mia is the new Sound of Music. I think our children and grandchildren will be grow up watching it on TV on Christmas Day

I think that something to have clear when watching this fil is that is a Musical, if seen in any other way it would look somewhat...overacted?

Perhaps that woman only heard it was about a girl who had 3 possible fathers and decided her family was too proud (or prude) for that

Funnily enough I heard a conversation like this on train into London yesterday between mother and her student aged son. Passed poster for Mama Mia and the mother says

M: That's a film I really want to see
S: Why? It's artless and shallow. Whole load of crap....and on and on although he had not seen it
M: Well I wasn't asking you to come with me [go mum go]
S: There's the new film coming about Dylan and Caitlin Thomas which is supposed to be re-examining...drone drone drone
M: I think I can live without seeing that!

My dc love the sound track,dd3 is a hoot singing Super Trouper.

How can a film be chav? I thought chav was a lifestyle?

(haven't seen k&p, was just trying to think of a film with teens getting pissed outside macdonalds, that's what the group-sometimes-referred-to-as-chavs do in our town!)

Even my DH wants to see it apparently as I asked if it was OK if I went after work one night....

The use of the word "chav" is nonsensical in this instance. If you're going to employ an overly used, lazy term, at least it should be used correctly!

I seem to have agreed to go and see this with my SIL (BIL managed to get out of it!) Given that the last three films I've seen (through choice) were Wanted, The Dark Knight, and X Files and the next film I'm planning on seeing is the new Mummy one, how much am I going to hate Mamma Mia? I should say that I have a soft spot for Abba, so the music is fine, I just get all twitchy over romantic 'chick flick' type of films......

I think to be shocked at some stranger's pov and to make an assumption that has made you absolutely distraught is overreacting somewhat.

Chav is a very flexible term. Used by those who want to distance themselves from anything they dislike, and who want to feel superior. Hateful word! It's also directed to the town we live in too whatdayisit, just so those superior souls who live in or near can differentiate themselves from the rest of us 'chavs'.
