And why does everyone offer different things so you really can't compare them?

I was like you but have to say that the staff in Phones4u were brilliant and really did all the crap for me. I'm such a technophobe, and my head was spinning!! It seemed as though it was all made to be as difficult as possible so that you stayed with the same phone and the same provider and they made loads of money, luckily for me the staff in the shop waded through it all for me

Tell me about it, I have had my phone for two years and want an upgrade as the battery is starting to go, I am absolutely dreading it and keep putting it off! I know they will try and talk me into changing my tariff etc I just want a slightly better phone for the same money.

I think if you go to the shop, tell them what you want and then sit back and wait for them to deal with it, you will get results. (as long as you're polite, of course!! I was polite, i was also useless at telling them what I wanted other than that I wanted more for the same money But we got there in the end!)

you can buy a new battery though for about a fiver. just google the name of your phone and batteries and it will come up with loads of sites. I bought a new battery for mine just over a year ago and it was fine.

I do now need a new phone as mine keeps switching itself off/going flat and as I've had a new battery recently I know it's no longer that.

The additional problem I have is that the phones that my speach software works on are predominantly no longer sold, and the only phones that I could have are ones like the nokia n73/n95 which have fancy cameras/video capabilities etc etc etc, features which I have absolutely no use for what so ever.

I've been with 3 since they started and last year they gave me a £10 loyalty discount.....this year no discount and less mins & texts for the same money-thought they were supposed to be competitive

I'm so confused-need to sort out asap as old phone is on its last last legs but won't be able to get to a shop for at least a week.
I've never had a phone (for the last 6 yrs or so) last a whole year and now nearly all the contracts are for 18 months as well....

Can anyone recommend a reliable long lasting phone? Please

Pay as you go is now cheaper than contract if you don't make many calls (say under 200 minutes a month). And lots of places (eg Woolworths) are doing decent phones for £20 with £10 back in calls.

Was going to buy the Nokia 2610 (I need a Nokia as they're the only ones to take an induction loop) as it's £20 and supposed to have good battery life (and not much else) but a friend is giving me an old Nokia N75.

All I can say is don't go to Carphone Warehouse as they lie about their rebates (confirmed by staff there!), won't terminate contracts, and are generally crap.

I always ask for the latest free smallest Nokia phone that they have. I find Nokia the easiest to use so I just stick with that.

Thank you notcitrus! Was thinking i'd try and pop in there as there is one quite locally-i won't now! I think i had probs with them years ago! I use quite a lot of mins a month as I live away from family and friends so pay as you go isn't really an option.

Phones4U were great with me. It took one and a half hours but they did all the work for me.. was difficult as i was going from TMobile to Vodaphone and it was complicated by wanting to keep my number....... I would really reccomend them though!!!
