we have been together for 20 years and have never had loads of money to save for a mortgage. what makes it worse is that my parents are very well off and have watched us struggle (and suffer) over the years. I am sick of telling people that i rent cos of all this but should i have to? i know that this subject will come up in conversation tomorrow with some new friends i have made recently. Am sick of the puzzled looks i get when i say I RENT MY HOUSE!!

what CAN i say to just tell people its none of their beeswax?

OP posts:

When we brought we had saved for years to get the deposit, we had no help and I was pregnant with dd.
We also brought when the market was just about to peak, so we were not fortunate in any sense.

expatinscotland · 01/08/2008 12:44

OP, if someone asks you, how about expressing shock that someone would want to ask such a personal question that's really no one's business?

because such a query is pretty rude and instrusive, IMO.

hughjarssss · 01/08/2008 12:46

Expat is right, its darn rude and I personally would tell them its not of their business.

expatinscotland · 01/08/2008 12:46

good for you, hugh!

it doesn't happen for some people, okay?

some people can't afford to save no matter what, or they are having to spend their money on something else.

there's no need to continually justify what you did and use it as a standard to be smug by.

hughjarssss · 01/08/2008 12:50

You make assumptions expat about how "fortunate" we are all and then cite the reasons why we are fortune.

I have explained why we are not fortunate but have worked hard.

And then beacuse I have proved you wrong, You start throwing insults.

[meh]

expatinscotland · 01/08/2008 12:52

it is fortunate, hugh, that is not an assumption at all.

all anyone has to do is stick around this forum for a while to see that.

i feel sorry for you, that you see this all as 'i'm right and you're wrong' instead of a discussion.

what a way to go through life!

hughjarssss · 01/08/2008 12:54

Yet more insults you throw - What a lovely way to go through life

expatinscotland · 01/08/2008 12:56

when people get silly, they're best left to it.

as you were, hugh.

KatieDD · 01/08/2008 12:56

hughjarssss i wouldn't call you fortunate at all. Unlucky more like.

hughjarssss · 01/08/2008 12:58

I know Katie - I would be much better off renting my house and paying out £100 more a month in rent than I do on my motrgage. That would be make me really lucky!

More insults Expat!
Maybe you should remember this is a disscussion and not get personal.

When people get rude and nasty, they are best left to it.
As you were, Expat

expatinscotland · 01/08/2008 13:01

keep going, hugh.

you're on a roll.

hughjarssss · 01/08/2008 13:03

You've dissapointed me Expat. Every post of yours int he last five minutes had been insulting .. and then you let down with that one.
Have you run out of insulting words?

rebelmum1 · 01/08/2008 13:15

I'd rethink moving abroad if I were you hughjarsss, who will take care of you when you are old? My parents are ill and lonely in France away from their family and grandchildren. They have no support network and the stress of moving home could quite possibly kill them. My dad's already had one heart attack, prostate cancer, skin cancer, has a blocked artery in his leg, only 80% lung capacity and my mum's got dementia. Good luck!

rebelmum1 · 01/08/2008 13:16

Thank god the health system is good in france!

hughjarssss · 01/08/2008 13:21

My family who live abroad will look after us rebelmum, thanks for wishes of luck

Backgammon · 01/08/2008 13:22

Why has this thread got so bitchy?

Thisismynewname · 01/08/2008 13:23

Green-eyed monster by the looks of it BG.

rebelmum1 · 01/08/2008 13:31

Some people are being a trifle smug which is triggering it.

hughjarssss · 01/08/2008 13:32

Definatly the green eyed monster

rebelmum1 · 01/08/2008 13:34

eh I own my own house

rebelmum1 · 01/08/2008 13:35

too many owns

hughjarssss · 01/08/2008 13:37

I wasn't refering to anyone in particular, just agreeing with thisismynewname

rebelmum1 · 01/08/2008 13:44

I don't think anyone has been jealous, just asserted more difficult circumstances can knock you out of the running for purchasing a house, which is quite true.
