I normally hang up intantly but was being all caring and letting her do her job.

It was probably the same woman who rang me last week.

I said I was on the way out (in fact dd3 already sat in the car) and she said it would take a couple of minutes.

Being polite stupid I agreed and 21 minutes later got really frantic and told her to get off the phone! She hadn't even finished

But then i hate cold esp from SKY they are always cold calling but will only speak to dh and it doesn't seem to matter how many times i tell him he's at work and won't be home until after 7pm (at the earlist) they just don't get it.

I once had a cold caller who insisted he had phoned to speak to "Miss Dd Spears". After 30 seconds of trying to point out that she was 12 months old, I put her on the phone and left her to it.

We're registered with the Telephone Preference Service, it doesn't stop foreign cold calls (which are few and far between anyway) but it certainly zaps the rest. We've had one call in 3 years from a UK company and as soon as I said "where have you had this number from? We're registered with the Telephone Preference Service" they hung up

Otherwise, just say "it's not convenient right now" then hang up immediately before they have a chance to ask when they can phone back.

As long as you are not actively rude right off the bat, you owe these people nothing.

Between the time dd was 10 days old and 20 days old, Sky phoned us 4 times. The first time, we politely explained that we didn't want sky, by the fourth time (a nice lady called) I cried at her and told her how little I'd slept and pleaded with her not to phone again.
However, someone tried to sell me insurance about a week later, waking up (now 4 week old) dd and ME, when nither of us had slept for more than two consecutive hours in teh last three days. I put the phone down next to the receiving end of the baby monitor and turned it up, then went upstairs to deal with dd.
He'd hung up by the time I got downstairs .

I used to work at a horrible IT sales firm where they made us cold call. We were targeted on how many callers we managed to speak to, and given bonusses. Trust me when i say that the people calling don't give a flying toss what's going on at your end, they just want to say their piece and get you agree to having a quote for something you don't want.
I just say "thanks for calling but I'm not interested" and hang up. I figure I'm wasting their time as well as my own by letting them go all the way through their spiel. And not a moment's guilt!

I normally just say "no thanks" and hang up, except for once when I was cold called at 7.30am; I was 42 weeks pregnant and he woke me up to try and sell me something. That poor poor man.

Wow you lot are far more polite than I am, as I'm registered with TPS I rarely get called, but when I do, it gives me great pleasure to let my days frustrations out on them. Yes I'm incredibly rude, so much so that they don't tend to call back. [evil]

But then I've also worked on the sales desk, selling double glazing!!! So I know they don't give a f*k about who they call, just as long as they get through their list.

I had a phone call today asking to speak to DH (his car insurance is due for renewal soon). I said he wasn't here and could I take a message.

When will he be in, they say? Um, September, says me (he is away in the military) - they hung up VERY quickly - I think they thought he was in prison or something!
