aaarrrgggghhhh flippin bank charges!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

checked my account this morning and £25 has come of in a charge, checked back internet banking and i went 69p overdrawn last month.

phoned the bank and as a gesture of good will they will refund half, so it has still cost me £12.50 to go overdrawn the price of a packet of chewing gum.

yes i know its my own fault blah blah blah but surley they can see it was just a bloody mistake.

YANBU, I was over my overdraft limit by about £3 last month and didn't get charged.

kerryk if it is a one off YANBU if you consistently go over go and rearrange your overdraft.

if it is just a one off go into the branch or ring again and ask for a full refund you should get it.

not been over my limit for a good few years now, maybe even longer.

i cant go into the branch as they are over an hour away. i really need to change banks, really dont like the clydesdale. they must be the only company in the world who i was glad to see get a call centre and they are all so lovely and friendly there but i get the shakes before calling the branch.

ring again and tell them it is unusual and ask for full refund you should get it

we were always getting bank charges for silly amounts basically because they wouldnt move my mortgage date
i had enough one day and phoned them up i didnt rant and rave at them but i was extreamly firm and told them if they didnt remove my bank charges and sort something out everything would be getting moved i was told oh dont be so hasty to which i replied NO YOU ARE BEEN HASTY i will be moveing 3 bank accounts the mortgage and all insurances and eventually i will not be the one loosing out

be firm dont let them rip you off

yanbu, ring again and say calmly that you are still unhappy with the outcome - ask to speak to a Team Leader or a Manager, say that you will move your banking elsewhere. (I work for a Bank, but not the Clydesdale!).

The charge is very OTT for a one-off incident imo.

I think they are tightening up, it used to be that if you appealed they wrote it off if you didn't do it all the time. I recently got charged £35 as I was a couple of hours late paying some money in and appealed for them to reduce it out of goodwill as I had concussion, they just ignored me and referred it to their complaints department.

When we got our morgage with the Clydesdale they insisted we open a current account to pay it from. They added a charge for the mortgage without telling us took it straight from the account leaving us £6 overdrawn with an unauthorised overdraft charge of £25.

When we complained they agreed to refund it but the charge was added on again the following month because "the system sees we have been overdrawn and adds the charge automatically". They refunded it again but the same thing happened about 6 months in a row before they eventually got it sorted.

Seriously thinking about stashing my cash under the bed!

I've just similar thing with Abbey. 25p past my authorised overdraft and got charged £25! Didn't bother ringing, maybe I should have done.

We're with A&L, we have an authorised overdraft which used to be charged at a tiny rate of interest; but now is 50p per transaction when overdrawn (& that includes when you've paid a cheque in but it hasn't cleared, so it looks as if you are in credit, but you aren't )

However it's nothing like £25, so I would def recommend looking at them (except that they are now in the throes of a takeover bid from Santander, who own Abbey, so I don't know what the outcome will be. They have been pretty good until now though)

Here is my suggestion:

1. Ask the bank how much you have been charged in the last 6 years for overdraft charges. Usually they will ask for a £10 data protection fee but you are allowed to claim up to 6 years of bank charges so depending on your situation it could be worth while.
2. Calculate how much you are trying to reclaim
3. Write a letter of complaint.
4. Usually the reject it but you have the right to go to FOS (they are the people who arbitrate).

There are some excellent letter templates on the website 'it pays to watch' where thousands of people have got there money back. The letters calculates all the interest you are owed and give the full procedure.

I thought banks had to charge 'reasonable' charges now £25 is not reasonable. If they won't budge then yes move your account pronto!

Also its better to try to agree a higher o/d figure if you can just in case as the interest will be less than the penalties. Occaisionally dip over too if sometimes been too agrresive in moving money to other interest accounts but the money it costs in small interest payments to bank is does not outweight the much higher rates you can get elsewhere.
