just wondering if it's me, but it's starting to get nauseating now hearing and seeing all this eco friendly this eco friendly that every minute of the day on Cbeebies.
Nina and Neurons used to be brilliant and then it turned into Nina and the Neurons - GO ECO!!!

I'm all for helping save the planet, but fgs, chill out with the eco friendly stuff, it's bordering on brainwashing.

twas the same when we (those of us who were kids in the 80s that is) were watching cbbc. If anything it was worse back then. Does no-one else remember the never-ending-blue-peter-alumium-can-recycling-light-flashy-tower ? I think it started when i was about 4 and ended when i was about 16! every feckin' week.

It's quite an important thing to be wrong about though isn't it?
There's only one planet

I'm with gobble - not popular, but there we go !

I did raise an eyebrow when I saw that Roary (or is it Rory?) the racing car runs on bio-fuel. Yes, it's an environmentally friendly racing car!

Not to mention the impact of bio fuel production on global food shortages.

AtheneNoctua · 16/07/2008 22:29

And biofuel still emits C02. The only thing biofuel does is not dent the oil/gas supplies.

And, it's "Roary".

Nina drives her personally numberplated car or her camper van every day except Friday, when she gets on her bike and says 'Go Eco!' I find it rather bemusing.

What about Auntie Bloody Mabel's carbon footprint? She gets in her plane to go two miles down the road to see a sewage plant or whatever it is this week!

And then there's the Koala Brothers...

Gobbledigook - I've seen some interesting theories about the kind of thing you say and it does leave an element of doubt in my mind too. Although as others have said, there is plenty of good in not wasting things, recycling and disposing of rubbish carefully and conserving fuel and energy.

I dont think that Cbeebies has any political intent in order to use "propoganda", personally.

Oh it drives me mental. The minute I hear that farking awful We Are The Children song I want to scoop the lot of them up into a huge chelsea tractor and take them off for a days' racing with Jeremy Fecking Clarkson. And then to McDonalds for a burger. And then we'll THROW THE PACKETS ON THE GROUND and go and CRAP in a RAINFOREST. ROOAAAAAARRRR!!!

(Actually I am car free, recyle a fair bit and grow the odd vegetable, but I loathe sanctimonious everyone-agrees-with-us crap peddled at kids like this).

I don't think YABU- it gets on my nerves too! It is all so preachy, and doesn't give kids all the facts (cos they couldn't understand them) just the constant preachy message. I'm not against recycling or reusing per se, but I do think there is more to climate change. It is NOT "our planet" , we are merely passing through. The earth has its own cyclical agenda. Yeah, maybe there are things we could do better (like not cutting down rainforests and not opening huge coal burning factories every day in China) but at the end of the day, the world WILL change.

Bet the dinosaurs are really regretting leaving those taps running now though....

GDG is certainly far from alone in her view. For example, Cool IT. I haven't read it but I hear it is pretty good.

Yes YABU

It's got to be a good thing. However you look at it.

Oh I know VVVQV - I agree and I did say I do recycle and think about waste, fuel, energy etc. Fuel and energy are exhaustable resources and it's just logical to recycle and be more efficient about how we use things.

I still don't think we are responsible for climate change though and I don't think we can do anything about it!

Gobbledigook · 17/07/2008 08:25

I agree with JJJ - 'the earth has it's own cyclical agenda' - absolutely, and we are a mere speck in it's existence.

We should most certainly be looking for alternative energy sources. But I believe this far more a matter of national security than it is about global warming.

CBeebies does go rather over the top with the eco message. I think hitting people over the head with it will probably be counter-productive - they will all rebel when they are teenagers and get hold of contraband supplies of CFC-containing deodorants, pass their driving tests age 17 and never walk anywhere again and leave mobile phone chargers/lights/TV/computer on all day and all night.

Ds has been convinced that driving cars is BAD but insists that it's OK when we do it. I have tried to explain that that's the problem - everyone thinks the same. But he stands firm - apparently you lot should all get off the motorways so they are clear for us!

P.S. We don't actually drive that often - occasionally at weekends. So it's not as if we are setting a bad example or anything, honest!

well its very hard to prove that the earth is not flat either. And who knows, maybe it is .

yes, the OP is being unreasonable really.

agree kids should have good mathematical/scientific knowlege . this is not precluded by them knowing about recycling.

fwiw most scientists I know-not ones chasing book deals or tv appearances, but just normal people-accept climate change. Whether or not its caused by humans, certainly we can still reduce the impact if we act now. Its been a long time since there was a 50-50 split on whether its happening, all you have to do is look at the rising temperatures or sea levels to see that sonething is happening. What you have is people like michael critchton looking for publicity and latching on to something people will react to, while the majority of ordinary working scientists shake their heads.

YANBU! It's a load of brainwashing!

And the sad thing is that I agree with being environmentally friendly but it's just full-on on Cbeebies.

It also seems that the message to children, in school as well, is reduced down to just recycle. Like my friend's daughter harrasses her mum about recycling, but there's nothing about not buying the things in the first place or about the energy needed to recycle. Or the truth about chopping down rainforests, which includes such things as a meat-heavy western diet, the global economy, and now, eco-fuels.

Cbeebies doesn't really do much less than what's peddled to most adults which is more about soundbites than reality, so I suppose that's why it annoys me so much, because of what it represents.

I thought Nina and the Neurons was always called that? Did it used to be Nina and Neurons? Bit strange.

Anyway, I do the whole recycling thing and it is good though it would be a hell of a lot better if there wasn't so much packaging in the first place.

The climate is changing, but then it's always changed and I'm not convinced that we are the ones to blame for it.
Yes, conserve energy because at some point the fossil fuels will run out, but all this global warming hysteria has got a bit out of hand.

thanks to all of those who see where I'm coming from. i'm not completely neurotic after all (well - maybe just a weee bit!).

i never said that the eco message shouldn't be on tv, all i'm saying is Cbeebies needs to tone it down a bit, they are ramming it in kids faces. it's not right, they should have a mix of normal kids programmes with and without the eco brainwashing.

sorry guys, i couldn't get online last night, DH was hogging the PC

"YANBU-you only have to read this thread to see that even the parents are being brainwashed about all this lets all be green and save the planet bollocks stuff.

tv for pre-schoolers should be for entertainment and nothing else.they have the rest of their lives to be brainwashed. "

When I was young, an awful lots of children's entertainment carried messages, too, usually on the lines of "be kind to animals". Was this too political brainwashing? If not, why not. Discuss. Personally, I have never had a problem with the messages on children's TV. I have located the off switch.
