to not want to leave my 5mo ds at tesco checkout?

I was at the checkout in Tesco, and the cashier realised the cucumber I had picked didn't have a barcode. I offered to go back and change it but as I turned ds (5mo) round in his buggy to go get it she said "don't worry - leave it here - I'll watch it". I took him anyway. But when I came back she looked at me like I was a crazy mad woman who thought she was going to do Bad Things to him.

I didn't think that but I didn't want to leave him on his own either. DP does say I sometimes worry too much. So, was I being paranoid? The checkout was the other side of the store from the cucumbers - I wouldn't have been able to keep an eye on him had I not taken him with me.

I wouldn't have left DS either - not because someone might steal him, but I'd worry that he would be upset at being left.

Perfectly natural, I reckon. Besides, he's your son, so you don't need to justify yourself!

I wouldn't have left DS till he was about 5, too worried he'd misbehave. Now he's 7, I send him to get stuff.

I can do the Mad Supermarket Dash far more quickly unencumbered by assorted children

Yanbu. Your child, your rules. Who cares what she thinks? She probably wouldn't have left her tiny firstborn with someone she didn't know from adam either (assuming he is your firstborn, going off your profile)

tbh I would have left dd for a minute but don't think YABU, it's your child, your choice.

I might have left mine at that stage if in a tearing hurry, but then he was gregarious and liked to coo at people. Also, if he was asleep I would have left him as DS could always sleep through anything from barking dogs to ful blown death metal discos. Depends on your DC, some babies would flap immediately if they lost sight of Mum.

well she did ask a member of staff, but member of staff just pretended he wasn't being asked so I went for speed. Thanks for reassurance that I'm not (on this occasion) Mad Crazy Woman

I used to work in tescos, people used to thrust thier tiny babies in to my arms all the time - I loved it! But I did always think oh goodness what if I drop them...

i wouldnt have left them and id have made them call one fo the ppl with headsets on who wander around doing nothing to go and get one with a barcode - they want to sell the product, so label it properly.

God you are NOT being unreasonable. What if she'd got distracted and someone had just wheeled him off? unlikely I know, but my greatest fear.

ANd it doesn't help that she called him "it".

Not crazy at all. It would be highly unlikely that something would happen, but just as easy for you to take him, so why bother with the risk?

yes, i know the "it" was about the buggy - that's sort of my point really, she was referring to the buggy not the child

I'm sure you'd be reliable but if you're offered the safe eye of a complete stranger then that's who they are and you don't know how distractable etc they might be

I am happy to be paranoid and keep my child close

YANBU. I was in the supermarket today and realised as I was packing the bags and everything was being rung through that I had forgotton to get peas. I told the checkout girl this - wasn't really thinking what I would do but before I had a chance to engage brain to work out what I was going to do with 2 ds's in a double buggy she had already said 'no worries I'll get someone to get them for you. What size bag and what brand would you like?' Nice one - wouldn't have expected it but I really appreciated it. Wouldn't have left my 2 either.
