Perhaps the specific area of tha country where she comes from is too dangerous to return too? Perhaps circumstances were different when she fled? Perhaps the family has settled and it's not as easy to uproot and go back to a country where you have nothing of your own left - even if you have family to visit. Perhaps she describes herself as a refugee because people are vile to immigrants?
I don't know, but you've not really got the whole picture from a brief chat have you?

lilacclaire · 13/07/2008 17:31

Nope, im wondering as well.

Maybe the part she goes to holiday is not a place where she can actually live and maybe she's got to sort of hide when she's there?

Don't really know just throwing an idea in.

She is wanting to go back, so it must still be unsafe for her.

lilacclaire · 13/07/2008 17:33

Also ditto what luckylady said, it must be terrible to uproot your family to go and live in a foreign country where you don't know anyone.

fryalot · 13/07/2008 17:33

was her English perfect? Perhaps she didn't mean refugee, maybe she meant Immigrant. Or maybe she was a refugee but isn't any longer and finds it easier to tell people she still is.

Maybe she said she was a refugee before talking to you and deciding that you weren't bigoted and it was safe to admit that she actually lived her voluntarily...

NotQuiteCockney · 13/07/2008 17:34

Maybe it's safe for her to go back on holiday, but not for her husband?

ermmmmmmm tbh its none of your business why she is here, whether she is a refugee, a migrant, or just fancied relocating.

and kerrymum WTF does is it matter if she is on benefits or not?

It's impossible to get the full picture from the brief conversation you had.

It's quite possible she didn't want to give all the intimate details of her personal situation to a stranger in the park.

Hecate · 13/07/2008 17:42

She may have come here as a refugee 5 years ago, and jumped through all the required hoops and got leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain, or citizanship... or maybe she came here under the - is it called the Gateway programme? - so now this is her legal home. The situation may be less dangerous in the sudan, but she now has the right to stay here, so she can choose. They don't give you leave to remain and then years down the line say "It's all ok now, piss off".
