my dd 8 has been saving up to buy some hsm magazine, she has got the required 3.50 so today was the happy day for the long anticipated purchase to take place,
she went into smiths, I sat on bench directly i mean DIRECTLY outside with 2 younger ds's, she entered shop and the shop assistant[who i might add i dont know] said 'where is your mum?'
dd says 'just outside on the bench', woman then says 'what you doing in here' dd replies'just looking around', woman says 'do you have any money?' dd replies 'yes £3.50' to which woman replies'well you wont get anything in here for that' at which point dd fled the shop white as a sheet and shaking
I made to go in the shop and give her what for, but dd begged me to leave it, considering her upset i did so, very reluctantly i might add!
but aibu for letting her go into shop on her own [she is nearly 9]
and if not , then what should i do?

complain to head office
its in Greenbridge,swindon,wiltshire
you'll get treated better than by the store manager

TheMagnificent7 · 10/07/2008 23:41

This post has made me more shouty than any other. I feel so sorry for your child. You have to complain.

In fact, let us know where it is and we can all go and show this woman what it's like to be humiliated. All day. Until she cries. The witch.

TsarChasm · 10/07/2008 23:44

Yes complain. What a disgraceful way to behave.

I never go in there any more. It's stuffy, old fashioned and overpriced.

arrrrggggghhhhhhhh · 10/07/2008 23:45

Go back in, find this woman, DEMAND to see the manager and give her hell. what a BITCH

missfib · 10/07/2008 23:49

yanbu what a nasty womam,i would complain.

nailpolish · 10/07/2008 23:51

your poor dd
she must have been crushed
i would go in alone and speak to the manager and demand a letter of apology to my dd to make sure she knows she wasnt inthe wrong and to make sure shes not scarred for life

nailpolish · 10/07/2008 23:51

please let us know how you get on

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 11/07/2008 02:48

Er, what, have I missed something? Does OP's dd have some sort of obvious SEN? Why is this her first experience of independent purchasing at double checks 8 years old? Why was the child left "white as a sheet and shaking" and crushed instead of saying, "I am here to buy some hsm magazine" ( WTF?) and going ahead with purchasing same?

You lot would seriously take a complaint to head office because an 8 year old can't cope with, um, shopping?

[incredulous emoticon]

Unless there's something not expressed in the OP, you are not only BVU, you seriously need to Get A Life.

Hey, Oldlady

Can't be bothered to translate all the bullshit acronyms, but you're obviously on a different planet to the rest of us.

Have a heart, Or FO. There's a good girl.

Can't you remember how much any injustice stings when you are a child, Oldlady?

Rudeness is very shocking for anyone who lives in a household where it is not permitted. I can understand the OP's child's reaction completely.

MamaG · 11/07/2008 06:53

OldLady are you being serious? You seem like a nasty piece of work

forevercleaning · 11/07/2008 07:13

What a nasty shop assistant.

I would deffo complain, even if you give them a ring today and speak to the manager. Your DD is old enough to go into a shop and buy things herself, especially if you were waiting outside. I do it quite alot with mine. It is supposed to give them a confidence boost. A shame this person acted in such a way, and Old Lady, are you a parent? Feel sorry for your kids if you are.

HereComeTheGirls · 11/07/2008 07:25

I STILL get upset by nasty shop assistants YANBU at all!

EustaciaVye · 11/07/2008 07:31

Maybe OldLady IS the nasty shop assistant

I feel for your DD I really do. I would complain to the Manager that the assistant was rude to a customer, a child, and state that you expect an apology to your DD.

I would also suggest you take your DD to a nice independent newsagents/book shop so she can buy her magazine by someone who knows basic customer service.

kslatts · 11/07/2008 08:19

YANBU - my dd who is also 8 love going in shops on her own while dh or I wait outside.

AbbeyA · 11/07/2008 08:27

I would most definitely write to the manager of the shop concerned and the Head office.
Unfortunately OldLady not all 8 year olds are brimming with self confidence, I was very shy at that age and there is no way that I could have coped with the rude assistant.

AbbeyA · 11/07/2008 08:30

I get very cross with the way children are treated in shops. Very often the assistant will ignore them and try and serve me instead and I have to say 'I think that this little girl was first'-whereupon they reluctantly turn to the child.

StealthPolarBear · 11/07/2008 08:31

Agree with WW that courtesy should be a given!
OldLady - were you the miserable old/young bag in question?

StealthPolarBear · 11/07/2008 08:32

Would an MN boycott of WHS until pasta's dd gets an apology (assuming she asks for one) be an overreaction?

FILLYJONKhasayarnshopASBO · 11/07/2008 08:35

awwww

my nearly 5 yo ds had a not dissimilar experience to this recently with horrible shop woman (note my new name )]

It is very very hard as you do rather want to kill them and scatter them into pieces and then dance upon said pieces but something always stops you. (well I assume, though I note the OP has not yet returned to the thread)
