To get irate over misuse of parents' parking spaces at Sainsbury's

No, not by those people without kids (although they are bad enough), but by people who use them when they have no kids with them but a car seat in the back of the car. Hello? The whole point of the spaces if for people who have their kids WITH them, not who just happen to have kids, somewhere. I saw two people do this on Saturday (while shopping with DD aged 2) and it really riled me - they should know better than anyone what a struggle it can be taking kids shopping.

No, you are not!

MilaMae · 08/07/2008 16:38

Personally the extra space you get with a P&T is an added bonus but being nearer the store is crucial for me. With babies in Rock a Tots you need the space more than location when you have more than 1 pre-schooler or toddler walking you need to be nearer the store.

J2O · 08/07/2008 16:40

lunarsea-are you joking?!

our Asa'a do enforce the parking in disabled spaces, they fine you, not sure if they actually carry out the p+t ones though

memoo · 08/07/2008 16:42

while we're on the subject, what age do your kids have to be to stop using parent and child spaces, mine are 7 and 9 now so i never use them but i have a friend with kids the same age who does

I agree with riven. My dd1 is 2.5, can get herself in and out of car seat, the extra space by the car is useful as I'm a crap parker but it's hardly essential. Dd2 on the other hand is only 2 months and it is difficult getting her in/out in rear facing car seat if some idiot parks too close - and I can't put her in from the other side cos dd1's carseat is in the way. I can't imagine being able to justify using the p&t parking once they're both over the age of 2 or 3 though

MilaMae · 08/07/2008 19:38

I have 3 walking children 4,4 and 3 and I wouldn't describe tackling them and a laden trolley easy.

Being near to the store and having extra space near cars so they don't bash other cars when getting in and out helps when I am on my own which is often.

Everybody's circumstances and needs are different, don't think anybody can judge unless they've tried it. My 3 are available anytime anybody wants to have a go at doing a weeks shopping with 3 pre-schoolers

SparklyGothKat · 08/07/2008 22:22

I witnessed a nasty confrontation(sp?) the other day. I pulled up in a P&T space (I have a 9 month old and a disabled Ds1) and a woman and her family pulled up beside another car and shouted at this disabled man 'Are you taking the Piss!!' The man replied 'I'm disabled' and they shouted back 'Well the disabled bays are over there' Nasty people.. the disabled bays were all full BTW.

youcannotbeserious · 08/07/2008 22:26

haha! I used to do this loads when I was first a step mum!!!

I had DSDs car seat in my car, so it was never questioned. How terrible is that?

Nowadays, I always park as far away as is neccessary to get 2-3 spaces because I drive a massive 4x4 and don't like to try and park it in a small space.

Oh, I am so going to get shot on MN tonight!!!

2shoes · 08/07/2008 22:26

(stalks SGK) what a shit head. I just don't get people like that.

catsmother · 08/07/2008 22:30

This is such an old chestnut - though I agree with you. However, like so many other things it boils down to an increasing lack of consideration for others in all sorts of situations. More and more people, it seems, are adopting a completely selfish attitude when out and about in public and couldn't care less about the effects of their arrogant thoughtlessness so long as they're alright.

blueskythinker · 08/07/2008 22:48

I saw a woman bounce out of her 2 seater sports car (parked in P&T space) at our local Sainsburys. She had an old english sheepdog in the passenger seat, so not much room for a child!!

When I complained in Sainsburys, they didn't give a toss.

MERLYPUSS · 08/07/2008 22:57

Havent read all the thread so this may have already been covered.
I don't feel i deserve a P&T space but with 5mth twins it is near on impossible to get them out the back if parked in a normal space.
I am also disabled but 'save' the disabled spaces for those more in need unless I am having a really 'dodgy' day.
Oh and why do they put the trolleys miles away from the P&T spaces? I can't lock the car and manhandle the DTs any distance to a trolley

youcannotbeserious · 09/07/2008 08:07

blueskythinker

Just park in two normal spaces

WheresTheAuPair · 09/07/2008 09:00

The ones that really get me are people in their huge brand new BMW's/Range Rovers that obviously 'need' the extra space of the M&P spaces to protect their precious cars
I don't bother confronting them but do give evil looks as i'm wrestling with DS and hope karma gets them back later!

youcannotbeserious · 09/07/2008 09:12

haha!! That's me!!!

To be fair, I got the car as a present when I had DS, so i do have a baby but I will actually park further away if there aren't any large spaces close to the store, because I would struggle to park it in a tight space...

Also, I'd like to think I'm also protecting other people's precious cars - I don't suppose you would like to come out of the supermarket and find a 4x4 parked next to your car - and your car with a huge scrape down the side, would you?!

Agree with Lazarou, though, if you really want to make a point and there are no P&T spaces, just park straight across two, if it's that important...

I largely agree with you.... I rarely drive it, to be honest.

I find it easier to walk places or take the bus - it's just easier with a young baby and a dog!!!
