I feel more humiliated really. We were on Skype on the webcam as they don't live in the same country. My DH and DD were facing the camera talking to PIL. FIL asked about his grandchild to be, so I lifted my top and showed my belly on the screen. FIL said "Put that away, it's disgusting".
I know there's a generation thing, and my DH tells me that it really doesn't matter. But it keeps coming back in my head. Maybe it's just the hormones...

It's interesting. Everyone at my gym saw my terrifying pregnant tum in all its glory right to the bitter end - but I would have covered it in a trice had I been in the vicinity of family or friends. I also had a strict no touching policy. My dad lunged at my tummy when I was about 14 weeks and I practically backed through a wall! I don't expect him to touch my tummy when not pregnant so it was certainly not on the cards just 'cos someone was in it! Hey ho - each to their own.

Kewcumber · 03/07/2008 13:55

but don't you ever think how daft it is that we wear clothes at all - no I don;t I think wearing clothes involved (initally) protection from cold and wet and thats still true today. It then evolved into a method of communication, conforming to social norms etc and these are perpetually evolving. There is bound to be conflict when two people with opposing beliefs meet at the margins.

I think his commetns (as I have said repeatedly) were harsh but explainable for a man of his generation (unless he's 34 and the OP is 17)

DH called DS2 "my parasite".

Pregnant bellies aren't everybody's cup of tea.

You'll need to get over it - there are plenty more things that will upset you before your child's 21 - no room for dewlling!

Elffriend · 03/07/2008 13:56

MrsRuff - I've ALWAYS been ashamed of my body! I'm a girl - is that not normal?!

mrsruffallo · 03/07/2008 13:57

Oh, don't be confused, Kew, I am happy for us to disagree and I really don't believe you are censoring me.
Maybe we just don't get each other's style, but horses for courses as they say

mrsruffallo · 03/07/2008 13:58

See Ellfriend- thaere's a lot of it about!
As a society we seem to be fascinated and repelled at the sane time

Kewcumber · 03/07/2008 13:59

Oh OK - its just we seem to have had several run-ins today and haven't been particularly conscious of disagreeing with you before - though don;t have particualr problem with disagreeing with you now!

I would also get undressed in a gym changing room but wouldn;t do it in front of FIL.

Kewcumber · 03/07/2008 14:00

actually thats because I don;t have a FIL...

charitygirl · 03/07/2008 14:00

'you shouldnlt have lifted your top'

Can't remember who said this, but I must just say hahahahahaha!

Get a life.

Cod - beautifully put.
BTW your friend missed an excellent night of debauchery the other night. (sorry to cross posts)

Still don't see the need to call tum disgusting. Does he have a beer belly? That is truly disgusting.

yes of course i accept that they are necessary given the complex set of norms we abide by in the society mankind has constructed.

i was talking more about the fact that it is these conventions which make nakedness unnacceptable; nakedness is not offensive in itself, but because of the way we have been conditioned to percieve it.

totalmisfit · 03/07/2008 14:08

shit is hazardous and repulsive in itself in all societies, developed or otherwise Cod becuase it has the potential to jeopardize our health if proper sanititation is not in place.

brightongirldownunder · 03/07/2008 14:08

COD!!!!!!!!
You can't compare pregnant tummy with shit!

Does he have a beer belly? That is truly disgusting - and if he had showed it to her we would all have been shrieking "EEEEUUUWWWWWW thats disgusting!"

brightongirldownunder · 03/07/2008 14:10

I think there may be a place somewhere where people may find shit appealing, you never know. But we digress...

totalmisfit · 03/07/2008 14:10

nakedness is only a threat to our health if the climate doesn't suit it so it's inappropriateness depends on time and place and social norms

Breizhette · 03/07/2008 14:12

I am not losing sleep over it. Just felt a little humiliated and it has come back to my mind since. I am interested and suprised to see how many of you think it was an odd thing to do. I genuinely wanted to hear what your thoughts were.
