Sick to death of neighbors cat pooing all over my garden - what can I do

LeftoutDIL · Today 13:51

My neighbours have a cat which has decided to use our garden as its litter tray. It’s pooing all over our garden (front and back!!) multiple times a week and I’m sick of picking up poo for an animal that doesn’t belong to me.

I don’t have pets because I don’t want to spend my time picking up its shit, so having to do it for someone else is driving me nuts. I’ve also got a young child who trod in it this week which I’m absolutely livid about !!!

We’ve tried putting coffee beans out and have bought a high frequency cat deterrent - neither of which have worked.

Before I waste more of my hard earned cash on stopping someone else's animal can anyone recommend tried and tested deterrents please ??

BTW I’m aware legally that cats have a right to roam but I don’t want to be dealing with this anymore.

I can’t believe all the people telling you to learn to love the cat. They are no better than vermin. I can’t understand why society accepts this level of trespass and fouling. Disgusting creatures and feckless lazy entitled owners.

Hiya chaps. Gentle reminder that the OP has said more than once they are sure it's the cat.

Calm down. Cats can be arses but they are not vermin FFS. For the most part they are wonderful creatures, who make our lives better.

Not much the owners can do sadly, though arguably could be responsible to clean up after the cat.

I have the same problem, ground to hard so just leaves it on top. I love cats but don’t enjoy the neighbourhood ones using my garden as a litter tray. As a gardener I think ours most be most attractive to them as most around here are paved.
I’ve tried everything including lion poo and the sonic deterrent (high pitched noise).
I can confirm nothing works.

Jojimoji · Today 14:56

I'd be collecting that poo and flinging it onto the neighbours' drive. Or at their front door.

Right to roam my arse.

Prideofpoona · Today 14:56

I used to sprinkle "Get off my garden" crystals to stop a neighbour's cat and dog using my garden like a latrine. It wasn't really the animals' fault as the owners encouraged them to go there when it was a building site. I have to say, the crystals worked very well and the animals weren't harmed.

They're disgusting. I don't care if it buries it. It's still stinking and there when I'm gardening. We live in a street of cat lovers and they're everywhere and it infuriates me. I feel like flicking the poo over my neighbours fence. We've got the cat deterrents off Amazon. They seem to work to start with but malfunction quickly. I also hiss and shout at them and put coffee grounds down. They don't care. As if I'd let my dog just poo in someone else's garden. Gives me the absolute rage.

Doesn’t it bury it? It’s pooing in the middle of the grass?

as pp said water pistol is your best bet.

you could speak to the neighbour- I’d couch it as concern- you know cats usually stick to borders and soft ground where they can bury their excrement, you’re worried that the cat maybe ill if it’s crapping so much in open places…but the owner can’t actually do much unfortunately.

Well the owner could keep it on their own property....

OP I would start by returning each and every turd to the owners garden. It'll make you feel better

Vermin ? Hardly!!

Vermy · Today 15:16

I’d speak to the neighbours first. Try a motion-activated sprinkler, it’s safe and may keep the cat away.

RaininSummer · Today 15:18

I stuck cocktail sticks in the areas of earth favoured by the local shit machines. No good in a larger area but quite effective.

Yes I wish cats were only allowed to be kept as indoor pets! Just seems odd to me to have a let pet then take no responsibility on where it goes and where it poos !!

Just as an aside; I have an indoor cat and OMG the horrible posts I've seen people on here post about indoor cats. It's cruel, it's unnatural, they're suffering, we don't deserve cats etc etc. So cat owners can't win on MN!

I'm really sorry you have to deal with it - it is true that a lot of cats do bury their poo but not all of them do. There are some good ideas here: https://www.birdspot.co.uk/a-wildlife-garden/cat-deterrents-that-work some of which are lower cost/effort and so might be worth trying.

Also thank you for not immediately wanting to use chemicals like Jeyes Fluid or similar to deter the cat - these can be really bad for cats not to mention other wildlife.

It’s very unusual for a cat not to bury it - are you sure you don’t have foxes?

This is just nonsense. I’ve had 20 years of various neighbourhood cats just shitting anywhere they want in the garden with no effort to bury it.

They're not making the OP life better.......nor all the other people who have to clean up someone else's pets shit.

My sympathies; my next door neighbour has 3 cats and our garden is their toilet. It's not just the grass or the beds, I've caught them doing it on the patio as well.
I buy those gel crystals and liberally spread it: I do think it puts them off. It's non toxic.
However, it's about £7 a bottle and I'm getting through loads. Nothing will stop it completely.

I find an airsoft gun works wonders…

That's disgusting. Our friends almost lost their cat because someone shot him with a pellet. He was lucky; the pellet hit him in his head but didn't go through his skull. The vet said it was amazing he hadn't been killed.

And no, he wasn't pooing in the person's garden - their cats have a litter box indoors they use the majority of the time.

If you are going to be nasty about cats. Why dont all the irresponsible dog owners pick the poo up. Sick of standing in it!!
