Sick to death of neighbors cat pooing all over my garden - what can I do

LeftoutDIL · Today 13:51

My neighbours have a cat which has decided to use our garden as its litter tray. It’s pooing all over our garden (front and back!!) multiple times a week and I’m sick of picking up poo for an animal that doesn’t belong to me.

I don’t have pets because I don’t want to spend my time picking up its shit, so having to do it for someone else is driving me nuts. I’ve also got a young child who trod in it this week which I’m absolutely livid about !!!

We’ve tried putting coffee beans out and have bought a high frequency cat deterrent - neither of which have worked.

Before I waste more of my hard earned cash on stopping someone else's animal can anyone recommend tried and tested deterrents please ??

BTW I’m aware legally that cats have a right to roam but I don’t want to be dealing with this anymore.

It’s very unusual for a cat not to bury it - are you sure you don’t have foxes?

That's a myth. Some do, some don't. My neighbour's cat definitely doesn't!

DandyTealSeal · Today 14:25

My neighbour used to have a solar cat deterrent thing, you can get them on Amazon. I think it transmits a noise they don’t like.

I would find a friend with a bigger Tom cat and drop their poo and kitty litter with wee in strategic areas and put some of their fur onto the bushes (from their brush).

No sensible owner will have a Tom cat.

be easier to get your dh to piss around the perimeter. Presumably he’s not neutered?

although I have heard zoo’s make a fair bit of cash selling lion poo for people to spread round as cat deterrent.

i agree with pp though- I blamed our poor neighbour cat for months. It was bloody foxes. However ime fox deterrent spray smells worse than the poo…

Netting above fence all the way round. Only thing that works

LeftoutDIL · Today 14:28

100% it’s a cat as I’ve seen it doing it multiple times but can’t get there quick enough to shoo it away

Much more likely to be foxes!

Weirdpig · Today 14:29

I'd film it and let your neighbour know to come round and pick it up.

FlipFlopSocks · Today 14:31

Cat owners really are clueless aren't they. No, cats don't always bury it, yes they poo in the middle of the grass for all to see. I literally watch multiple different cats doing it on a patch of grass next to my house every day.

Fridgemanageress · Today 14:31

cats generally dig a hole, do the doo, and cover it over.

i would have a look at a water gun like my neighbours kid has got, it holds a lot of water and shoots it out really fast - it can soak you so quickly - I bet it’s therapeutic too

I can’t do it here, unfortunately. It’s mostly hedges, and the back ‘wall’ of our steeply sloping garden is a vertical rock face that cats can jump down from above on.

I’ve found yoghurt pots of clean vinegar effective

Put chicken wire, cut brambles or cat spikes down. There is cat pepper too.

I really sympathise, unfortunately the cat’s owner’s can’t control where it goes.

You can also throw water at the cat if you catch it in the act - 2 or 3 times will sort it. Have a bucket of water ready to go.

Edited

Sure they can. By keeping it inside.

Hahahaha - cats seem to have lost the instinct to bury.

No cats in my garden bury their shit.

But then I don’t want to find I am getting my fingers in buried cat shit when I am gardening either.

Why the hell cat owners can’t put out litter trays in their own gardens I don’t know.

OP, I yell aggressively at every cat that jumps over my fence and squirt them with a water pistol if time. Scaring them does seem to work, they now race through my garden some of the time, rather than stopping to shit.

They have damaged my gate by constant climbing and jumping but hey, we seem to be expected to indulge other people’s bloody pets.

Yep I literally witnessed it from my bedroom window today hence this thread!! It definitely doesn’t bury it as it’s right in the middle of my grass / drive way !

Or cat proofing their own garden

lessglittermoremud · Today 14:33

You need to lie in wait and spray with a water pistol, we’ve got a cat of our own (who uses his litter tray) but our neighbours cat poo’d on our front lawn with no attempt at burying it….
Despite it being a hassle I literally waited for it to appear in the garden when I was at home with time to spare and sprayed it every single time with one of my boys water pistols. It doesn’t tend to even set a paw in our garden now, I only have to open the front door and it scarpers.
I have moved the problem on though because now it does it in the front garden of the house on the other side of me.
I tried to talk to the owner but she said that cats were free to roam and she wouldn’t put down a tray because ‘they are disgusting…”

AbouttimeIhadanewusername · Today 14:34

They don’t like citronella. The oils goes a long way. You could water the area with a dilute spray. You could get one of those motion sensor sprays for the garden on an electric device at a frequency that they hear at.

Sherararara · Today 14:34

I find an airsoft gun works wonders…

Namenamchange · Today 14:36

Feed it, make friends with it, it won't poo where it thinks it lives

Yes I wish cats were only allowed to be kept as indoor pets! Just seems odd to me to have a let pet then take no responsibility on where it goes and where it poos !!

My boys are very quick shots with their nerf guns, seems to keep the numbers down somewhat. We also have a motion detector sprayer that we set up sometimes. My husband managed to boot one spectacularly a few months ago but that was pure luck.
It's bloody disgusting, and dangerous, to have a garden full of cat poo. Its the owners I loathe, foul fiends the lot of them.

I think cat owners refuse to believe us because they only ever see their cat hiding it in the litter tray. It just doesn't occur to them that cats are independent creatures with completely separate lives outside the edges of their gardens. It's like a cult, the amount of people saying it's fox poo is ridiculous. They just can't stand the idea that their little darling might be a dirty nuisance to everyone else.

I don’t want anything to do with it tbh lol!!

We are thinking about getting our friends dog over to put its scent all over our garden instead

Clueless.

I used to have cats and foxes. Got rid of the foxes when my neighbour replaced his fence and I put barbed wire just under the soil and along the fence which has stopped them digging under. And the fence is too tall for them to climb / jump. Not seen a fix since.

The fucking cats still come in. I think I am going to get some of the plastic spikes.
