What's the weirdest thing you've seen in a house?

  1. A penny farthing sitting on a landing of a mansion.

  2. Lots of tiny feathers on the stairs of someone's house who didn't own a bird and in the same house I think they had a secret lodger as every time I went to the loo I heard footsteps run from one room to the next upstairs. I never mentioned either!

Those photos are amazing! If only I had an old mini in my lounge!

A HUGE (must have been at least 8 foot) Virgin Atlantic “Flying Angel” figure / sculpture in the smallest garden. It was a giant of a thing and every house on the street could probably see it peaking over the fence. I have no idea where the woman got it from!!

A “cat dollhouse” in a lady’s garden. It was a little house she asked me to squeeze into (it was essentially a child’s playbouse) and it was complete with cat walk paper, hanging cat photos in frames and a cat chaislong!!

Having to crawl (with my husband!) through a “tiny half door” that led to a “kung fu parlour” (aka garage) when viewing a house for sale. There was no second viewing.

In a B&B in Howth, Dublin,

A life size statue of Jesus that glowed in the dark.

He was giving me the heebeejeebies, never mind the DC, so I put him into a large cupboard in our room for the rest of our stay.

Claw footed bath in the middle of the living room, massive hole in the ceiling above. Could see the upstairs toilet through the hole.

The downstairs toilet, was in the kitchen. Fully plumbed in, beside the space for the fridge.

The master bedroom ensuite had a folding shower door, facing the toilet. You either sat with your feet in the shower or sideways. The shower was wider than a regular cubicle so you could just get in it without cimbing over the toilet. There was no space inside other than the 30cm from the side of the toilet to the door. Assume it was a former cupboard. Do not know why they installed the toilet facing that way, there was room to turn it 90°.

House was advertised as 2 and a half bathrooms. We didn't put in an offer. It did sell 2 years later was fully renovated, and sold on.

A shower cubicle in the bedroom. Freestanding, see through and a pipe running through the wall to the tiny bathroom next door

My granny did it. She only had a bath in the house and she could no longer get into it. Quite why she didn’t just take out the bath from the bathroom and install a shower cubicle, I’ll never know.

Oh the traumatic memories of house hunting....

4 bedroom property, bedrooms on the ground level with living accomodation underneath (beautiful views, positioned on an incline) BUT main bedroom clearly belonged to the parents, second bedroom was carpeted in astroturf with large dog bed sofa thing with claws and lots of pictures of this ugly bulldog, the final two rooms were of equal size. One was the bedroom of the teenage and toddler boy (tiny room crammed with stuff), the other had lino on the floor with mirrors on the ceilimg, like square mirrors, and a large open litter tray thing.... again for the dog.

Viewed another family home with racy pictures of the couple up in the dining room. Same outfits, must have been 3 or 4 differently posed pictures based on the style id say 1980s.

Viewed another house where the couple were sadly divorcing. House itself was fine, but there was a carport running down the side of the house with a fabric wardrobe, camp bed, stove etc and dummy loo set up.... clearly the husband was living in the car port with make shift curtains etc. We viewed in May and was still chilly.

At the start we viewed a lovely house, absolutely immaculate and super modern. Partner recognised him as a sportsman and his wife / girlfriend is a model and influencer. Dressing room was full of chanel, dior bags etc., house smelt lovely UNTIL we went into the bathroom. Behind the door pushed against the wall and the door, were loads of used nappies and it reeked!

Tartan wallpaper, tartan curtains, tartan carpet, tartan throws. All different tartans and all in the same room.

Was it Balmoral. The rooms there look like someone took every tartan in Scotland and threw it at the furniture in every room.

I worked on a farm with a traditional old fashioned farmhouse kitchen . Under the kitchen table was a panel of wood and under that was the bath sunken into the ground. Everyone walked through the kitchen it was the heart of the house. Got to be pretty open about bathing there!!

I once lived in a basement flat of a huge regency house - it still had all the original features even if some were blocked off like the servants stairs
It had a marble lined meat safe, a green baize lined strong room for the family’s silver, bell pulls and internal telephone system, gas wall brackets - the oddest bit was the underground koi carp pond including fish that a previous tenant had built in the coal cellar

Large meat hooks hanging from the ceiling in a room next to the kitchen, with a “trench” underneath leading to a drain. It was a very old house and my mum took great pleasure telling other viewers that the trench and drain were for the meat blood to drain away. Unfortunately we were still outbid.

I have one of these rooms in my house. It’s a talking point for visitors. Last used in the 80’s I believe for hanging venison and lamb.

Not buying, but my ex once went to view a flat for rent

The loo was next to the cooker-you could go do your business while flipping the burgers you where cooking for dinner

My friend moved into a house where the only loo was in the lounge

It was behind a door in the corner

She said she could go for a wee without missing the plot of coronation street

Sadly,we bought our house from a normal lady but she did take the ladders for the attic (which she technically should have left)

Worst we found was a child's plastic swimming float and a ben10 blackboard

I was sightly disappointed

I once went to view a flat for rent with this very same arrangement! Was it in Plymouth by any chance?

A cheetah. Large house and my mother opened a door which turned out to be the downstairs loo (accessed from the hall one side the kitchen the other) and the cheetah was calmly sitting on the toilet. The owner had it as a pet and just put it there for the viewing. It was quite a surprise!

A toilet plumbed into the living room. And the entire house had a vent system to heat the house instead of radiators.

Also needed rewiring. We did not make them an offer.

I thought you were going to say a heating vent system powered by the gas from the living room toilet Grin

Not me but my parents

When they married, they lived with my grandad, had me and moved into a flat (it had a shop underneath)

My father noticed a bit of dodgy ceiling in the corner and being my father,he tugged on it

It was a fake ceiling and it fell to the floor-along with a million victorian receipts and log books from the shop below (it had been an ironmongers back in the day,its now a posh hairdressers)

He was overjoyed, went through them, sorted them out and stored them carefully

He took them with him when they bought their next house and kept them in an airtight box in the attic

I got a few to show off in history class and then my mother told him to bin them-he donated the whole lot to our local museum

Fascinating to read at the time and he often goes to the museum to see 'his' papers (and to see his name next to them)

He never owned up to the damage he did to that ceiling and got away with it

So far I've read the first 3 pages of this thread and I'm torn between laughter and shocked horror, there are some weird people out there!

Either wat , you were entirled to be freakout by it!! Amazing that the owners didnt think this would make it a hard sell really

We actually nearly bought the house! Unfortunately the roof needed replacing along with the grade 2 listed iron gutters and it was just too much money and too many unknowns.

The cart thing was funny weird, not freaky weird. I'd been making a mental list of uses for it.... clothes horse, dog bed, book shelf maybe 🤣

I once viewed a house that belonged to a Dr Who enthusiast. Every room was painted a galactic purple, with stars and milky ways (even the radiators).
The owner told me that the mean old estate agent had made her put her memorabilia and collectibles into storage to make it look less cluttered, and that she felt that the house now had no personality.
The mind boggles as to how much stuff she must have had, because every square inch of that house was covered in toy daleks, aliens, Drs etc etc!

purpletrees16 · Yesterday 23:28

A room painted white (including white floorboards) with small shed in the middle painted entirely in white gloss with a smaller shed inside that, also painted white.

Turns out he was an art student. We were there to buy a table from him and as it was London, this was his living/kitchen/hallway so he left us standing staring at the shed whilst he fetched the table from his bedroom with no context. There was no other furniture in the room and the kitchenette was covered beige painters tarp. But nothing else was. It was eerie but in the context of his flat it did feel like art! Especially combined with the selling off of his other furniture!

No it was a 'normal' 3 bed house with average sized rooms and I forgot to mention the tartan fridge freezer in the kitchen. It was a diy sticky backed plastic job 😂
