To hate the term “Thank you for your support”

Often get this as a sign off in emails from my DS school. Something about it annoys me.

Its because its telling you that supportive parents will do whatever the latest ask is, and presuming with the thanks in advance that you will do it in order to be supportive. Its a bit disingenuous when it relates to a new rule or instruction. Not so bad if its a request for mince pies for the Christmas fayre.

Does "Kind regards" enrage you too?

Stop supporting people and they'll stop thanking you for it.

OK, I was being facetious there, I know I've seen this used when I've not been the one doing the supporting, but it seems a harmless way to thank people really.

Are you enjoying your hating though? If you are, then crack on, but if you're agonising over it then... I don't know... get a grip, or something?

Sorry OP but i can't see an issue with it.

TraitorOrFaithful · Today 15:01

I can't see a problem with it.

You nailed it there!

Where did I say I was agonising over it? The internet has many pointless little posts like this you are free to ignore.

Happy to acknowledge that you didn't say you were agonising.

I felt I had that covered by using the word "if".

It wouldn’t annoy me. Do you always get annoyed by such minor things?

I’ve used this recently in an email to my son’s school (his head of year). She has been incredibly supportive with his journey in getting a diagnosis for autism.

I don't like it either. Maybe I don't support them, and they are trying to manipulating into being more helpful.

It's a bit like 'thank you for not smoking'. I'm not avoiding smoking because they want me to, so thanks are not appropriate .

That's different. She has supported you so thanks are in order. In the case OP mentions, the school is just hoping that parents will support them!

I find it a bit PA. They're thanking you for support you haven't given yet, basically expecting your support. It's usually used on messages they know will be unpopular.

It's not something that bothers me beyond wondering how they think it comes across.
