To buy a Fiat 500?

I used to have one for years, prior to getting pregnant. I sold it as I wanted a 5 door car for my car seat.

I drove it many miles, regularly driving from the midlands to Dover for swimming and I loved it, but that 9 years ago now.

I currently drive a big SUV as I have used it for towing horse trailers, but the COL has meant the horses have sadly had to be sold and the car is now far too big and expensive for my needs.

I am really fancying another Fiat 500. I have access to another estate car for needing to move big things etc and this car will mainly be for me and my 8 year old son to pootle around in. My commute is about 30 minutes each way, occasionally will go much further. I am not interested in speed or power, purely cheap and safe.

Does anyone have one currently and can give me any pros and cons? Ideally I want an older model with the cheapest tax. My current car is almost £100 a month for just tax and insurance then easily another £150 - £200 in fuel. It needs two new tyres too and almost £100 each! I just cannot afford it anymore.

Any advice, good or bad! will be much appreciated.

Lovely cars (had them as hire cars), only drawback is they don't like hills. If your journey to work does not include a hill, go for it.

I'm not sure what advice you're looking for... You know your likes and dislikes, you know your commute, your routine, how many miles you tend to drive. You had one for years and liked it. How can strangers on MN advise??

Ask @RelievedNoYouTubeMum

They used to have one

Tortephant · Today 10:31

I agree with @takealettermsjones

I also think you should consider an older mini. A bit more room for DS and stuff

Nitgel · Today 10:32

Didn't they come out really bad in crash tests.

We’ve had 2 Fiat 500 and a couple of older minis ( countryman and coupe). Loved them all. The Fiat 500 travelled miles on motorways and country roads up hill and down dale. Both had door handles come off ( this is a standard problem I believe and relatively easily remedied). In comparison to the minis it is a bit flimsier and obviously smaller but for pootling around in, unless you’re going to go for a Japanese model, a Fiat 500 is hard to beat.

I have a second hand electric one, it's super cheap if you can charge at home and a breeze to drive. Tax £200pa, insurance £300.

I’m not sure they do well in safety tests!

GasPanic · Today 10:41

30 minutes a day is a long commute by most standards, unless half of that is in traffic queues.

Surely you want something a bit larger and better. Larger will be safer.

You are spending a lot of time in the car per day, so have something that gives you a bit of comfort and security.

£100 is not expensive for an SUV tyre.

Thr33lions · Today 10:52

Yes I have one currently. It’s a 2022. Bloody love it.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · Today 10:55

I think they’re lovely cars. Some family members have them, and I’ve also driven as a hire car.

Another small car that is good is a VW UP - just sold one I had for years as I needed a bigger car, plus it was getting old, but I loved it.

I have one. It's 15 years old. Bloody love it and trying to replace it but can't find anything better. Tax is £60 a year. Lounge model.

What is the unreasonable question? This should be in cars or chat
