Settle this argument- racist or not

BIL and nephew are Man U fans- not mega but they go see them 3/4 times a year watch the games on tv etc. BIL is a well educated, articulate smart man. I like him. Nephew is 18 and lovely.

There is a new footy chant along the lines of “blah blah blah management idiots, fuck off home” they were talking about it, saying have you heard this? This is the new one.
Now, swearing aside, I said to BIL you can’t sing that it’s racist. And he said no it wasn’t, so in reply I said are the owners/managers foreign and he said yes, some but not all, and so I said- yep the chant is racist.

He thinks I am being ridiculous. I think he is being complacent and really should not singing it. He said it’s about sacking the management and I said the “go home” bit takes it to a different racist level

so am I being precious?

You need to say what the actual lyrics are before any of us can say if they're racist

I don’t think you need to dictate to your BIL what he can and can’t do/say/sing.

I think it's really about the specific individuals rather than where they come from per se.

It depends whether the people in question have emigrated here or not surely.

If they have then it's possibly racist, if not then not really.

If there were some tourists behaving badly and you told them to f. off home then that wouldn't be racist would it.

Football fans say f off home to British people. Usually to the opposition after a match, it's nothing to do with their heritage.

Some football chants are dodgy, there are some my husband no longer joins in with now he's a bit more thoughtful. That said, telling anyone foreign to go home obviously has a long and well established history of being racist. Perhaps with football managers it could be different, if they're temporarily in the UK for that job. Why not explain your point of view and tell them to leave the chants at football?

Hopefully, Man U will get relegated along with Man City. We can but hope.

Im fron across the pond and have had horrible things said to me include being told to ‘go home’ (I have lived here for decades). This isn’t the same.

One of my favourite Man U related ones was by Crystal Palace fans at Old Trafford 'we'll race you back home'. As a lot of their fans come from the south...

I think they are white Americans so how can it be racist? Possibly xenophobic. But not even that really. They arent telling them to fuck off because they are American. They're telling them to fuck off because they are twats.
