Strange Christmas Decorations.

In John Lewis I was astonished to see tins of baked beans, soup, marmite and a lot more besides as tree baubles. Not only surprised but shocked at the price too. £15 a pop. I understand the novelty aspect but AIBU to think its taking decorations a bit far.
I hasten to add I thought their selection this year was poor.

I know it might be a bit heavy but surely you could just make your own for a fraction of the price? You'd have to scrape out the marmite and put it into a different container.

I won't be doing that though because I don't like them. I like cute, silly decorations (some of mine are 50 years old and I can remember peering into the baubles as a young child because they made my face look funny, before hopping off on my Kermit space hopper) but they're not really cute.

I love them. George at Asda has typewriter, leopard print boots, trainers, vegetables, and mayonnaise / sauces as baubles this year!

Absolutely bonkers and I love it!

Gave my mum a vegan Greggs sausage roll bauble one year, she loved it.

yet more absolute crap to fleece people with and as for the cute pig in a blanket, if only that is what a pig in blanket meant, maybe research the reality of how the cute pig ends up in a blanket, it isn’t pretty and cute

@DeadPlants totally agree utter plastic rubbish

We very enthusiastically collect weird decorations and love them. I don’t mind paying a bit extra for them because we look after them and they last for years! We now have so many that we rotate them year about!

I love a weird Xmas decoration! Why not?!

We have all sorts - collected over the years, all happy memories.

Last year I got an Ugg style boot tree dec from M&S

There's a difference between actual branded ornaments like the Heinz baked beans and generic ones like a slice of pizza, a hot dog, or the good old Prussian glass pickle. As with clothing with visible logos, if brands want their branding displayed they should pay for it out of their advertising budget rather than asking individuals to fund their own indoctrination. On the other hand, I can see how some specific branded products might have come to have genuinely nostalgic Christmas associations, like Tunnocks's Snowballs or Birds's Custard or the tin of Spam that Margaret Thatcher always had for Christmas dinner. Creating an artificial demand that serves its own purposes while convincing the depleted humans that it was their own brilliant idea is one of the things that Capitalism does best.

I buy my kids a tree decoration every year for their stocking and try to find ones which are things they love, or in jokes. I love the variety of decorations you can get now and they have quite a good collection each, even though I only started when they turned 21.

I buy grandson a decoration or two each year that represent something he has enjoyed or been interested in that year in the hope that he can track his childhood when he grows up. This year he's getting a minion and a hotdog so I am always delighted to find the more bizarre offerings.

'I'm not like other people I have pizza slice decorations on my tree!'

Even though it's been the main Christmas decorating aesthetic for the past 5 years or so.

BloodyHellBob · Yesterday 20:49

@Tiddlywinklyindeed, the memories of cackling over a daft bauble! I honestly remember when and where we bought all of ours!

TeaAndToastx2 · Yesterday 20:53

I normally love letting the kids pick out a new bauble each year at John Lewis and had a look last weekend- wasn’t impressed with their selection at all. The novelty ones are definitely not for me- or even my children it seems who didn’t want any either!

When DH and I first got together, I bought him a tree decoration as part of his gift. He thought it odd (he lived with his parents) but took it in good humour. I did the same the following year (he then lived in a shared house, no Christmas tree).

Eventually we moved in together and married. Every year, a new bauble. Usually related to something we'd done together that year or an interest he had. After having kids, I bought them one each as well, even as babies.

18 years on and he was decorating the tree with me and the kids and each bauble held a memory he related to the kids. And at the end, after years of being a bit perplexed, by my self imposed tradition, he turned to me and said "now I understand, thank you". Took him long enough! Every year since, he's smiled at his new bauble and thanked me.

Bearing in mind I mentioned the pizza slice, I assume this is a reference to me. Weird, seeing as I've neither said nor implied I'm not like other people.

I just happened to mention that one as it's the most recent non-traditional one I've bought.

What's the snark about?

Nothing to do with your post, hadn't even read it. Just the first commonly seen kitschy tree decoration that popped into my head.

Always a good idea to post without reading the thread...

You're still making the assumption that people want to claim they're different because they have novelty tree decorations. Maybe people just think they're fun and enjoy them?

I’m going to stick to my all glass decorations but I confess to a crepe paper cracker 30+ years old that gets hidden in the depths. It was made by my DD.

A lot of them are actually glass - as we discovered when our cockapoo in a Christmas jumper shattered on the floor.

Oh my goodness, is the subject of tree decorations such a delicate one that a person should just read each post first? 😂

You do have a strange sense of superiority about you. Weird vibe on a fun thread! 🤷‍♀️

And now you're just making stuff up. Whatever brings you cheer!

Have a very Happy Christmas when it arrives.

I have a tree in my kitchen for food drink decorations. I love it. Going straight to John Lewis website to check it out.

@NoWordForFluffyooh which museum did you find a Titanic and Henry VIII? Id love the Titanic in particular.

Rainallnight · Yesterday 22:03

I’m not a fan at all, but they have been around for a long time so there’s definitely a market for them. I associate them originally with Paperchase on Tottenham Court Road back in the day.

Nofeckingway · Yesterday 22:09

I have a very eclectic tree every year . Just my family tradition I grew up with . I have decorations from 1930s from grandmother , retro 60 and 70s from my childhood . Then I have baubles from places I have travelled to . All covered with lammenta that really reflects the 2000 lights .

But I will be the first to admit that I do go over the top . There is also a collection of Nativity cribs from all over the world.

It makes me happy .
