Strange Christmas Decorations.

In John Lewis I was astonished to see tins of baked beans, soup, marmite and a lot more besides as tree baubles. Not only surprised but shocked at the price too. £15 a pop. I understand the novelty aspect but AIBU to think its taking decorations a bit far.
I hasten to add I thought their selection this year was poor.

I loved this thread and hanging out with my fellow kitsch tree lovers. My whole tree is based around the fun baubles like these, and a matchy matchy colourscheme tree will never be found in my home.

I think it’s a bit strange to consider some Christmas decorations to be ‘going too far’ just because you don’t like them. If they’re not to your taste, that’s fine; I’m not that keen on them either. But that doesn’t mean they’re ’strange’ or ‘going too far’.

Loads of people wouldn’t like my Christmas tree, I’m sure!

MauriceDobson · Yesterday 11:42

I dont decorate the house at all but I do have a lovely Perello olive ornament

mondaytosunday · Yesterday 11:43

Ah now I have stems of brocolli, an octopus, a mini deck chair - all sorts! And if you think £15 is pricey take a gander at this - went to Liberty’s a couple weeks ago and the place was busy! And even I might baulk at having a devil hanging in my tree…

DH, ds and I started a tradition last year where we are going to go to John Lewis each year and each pick the most non Christmas bauble we can to add to our collection. Last year was a Rubik's cube, a lemon and a fox playing a trumpet

Sherararara · Yesterday 11:46

We have two trees every year. One is the traditional red and gold with the usual
baubles etc. The other is the “fun” tree with decorations covering pop culture, ones we’ve bought from places we’ve visited, funny and weird ones we just like just like OP mentioned…it has a light up gonk on top instead of a star.

TeawithMeerksy · Yesterday 11:48

We love the weird decorations and kitsch is very trendy at the moment.

glad to hear they have a marmite one - will get one for my marmite obsessed 5 year old

KilkennyCats · Yesterday 11:50

Marks and Spencer’s have most of their foodstuffs in bauble form. I find it bizarre, who would hang a mini packet of M & S crisps on their tree?

Yes my DS loves his ketchup
got him a Heinz ketchup one last year.

I have just spent an enjoyable giggling 10 minutes reviewing the delights on that thread, I would recommend you all do the same!

I think our most unusual bauble is a hammerhead shark (it's glittery though!).

It lives in the "anything goes" tree we always have upstairs.

The main tree is always silver and we have some decorations that are 20 years old. We went wild our first Christmas living together (ironically in JL) and purchased some things of beauty. They still make me happy all these years later.

When my mum was alive it was always a tradition for me to buy her a new bauble. I always went for pretty as opposed to unusual. My dad often doesn't put his tree up until Xmas Eve so I don't bother with giving him a bauble but its lovely to see all the ones I got my mum over the years on his tree!

I've suddenly come over all misty eyed and nostalgic.

I bought my husband an aubergine! I was thinking of the sketch in Goodness Gracious Me. No idea it was rude!

Hotafternoon · Yesterday 12:52

I was in a garden centre with a friend and they had Heinz tomato sauce bottle tree decorations. We both thought they were horrible but we like the traditional tree decorations so we were never going to buy them. I'm sure there will be plenty of buyers though.

ClippyMuldoon · Yesterday 13:01

Crunchymum I have a shark! He has a Santa hat, he came from Australia alongside a kangaroo and a koala 🤣.

Mad Christmas trees are the best. I get this from my granny - hers was nuts long before decorations went off piste. My own Mum liked 'tasteful' matchy matchy and changed the scheme every few years. No fun at all and oh how she hates mine 😀

Shops have been selling decs like this for years.

Marks and Spencer also did jungle animals last year, it fitted in with my DD's decor and Navy tree. My DD gets M&S dipping/baking, food to order, cheese every year, so this year her draught excluders/door stops, are Next's cheeses range. It's a bit of fun. Baubles represent the season, for many, that M&S food.

One of my friends gave me a glittery mushroom last year.
It spent the Xmas period dangling off my spider plant

I have a felt mushroom decoration that I bought in Belgium or the Netherlands. . I don't know why. Possibly a woodland thing going on rather than food.

dicentra365 · Yesterday 13:38

There are a few oddities in there, like the benetint bauble - that's hardly a classic brand. I can see the point of heinz and marmite, my sister who doesn't live in the UK would probably really appreciate this. They also have a few that I love including, disco mouse, the food mixer and the balloon dog, I wish I lived closer to a John Lewis actually.

ChocolateCinderToffee · Yesterday 13:58

I think Paperchase started it with the aubergines.

I love tinsel draped in the swag style so it looks like Christmas trees on a Christmas card of old. With lights and baubles and home made decs from when DS was little! 🎄💗

Me too! Thanks for posting the thread PP!

My favourite is the queen! I’ve just laughed out loud and everyone thinks I’m having too much fun.

I got a Santa hat prawn for my sister one year. She said she loved the idea of someone knitting prawns to sell and it was much better than the drop shipped tat that Etsy is filled with these days! Can recommend! Xmas Grin

GameOfJones · Yesterday 17:13

Personally I don't think Christmas is the time for good taste and I'm very happy with our tree that is a complete mishmash of random ornaments collected over the years. We do have some odd ones but they all mean something to us.... a dinosaur wearing a Santa hat from when DD1 was obsessed with them, a glittery coffee cup for coffee obsessed DH, a cruise ship from one of our holidays etc so in that vein I could see Marmite jars or baked bean cans being good for ex pats, in fact I may send one to my DB in Australia 🤣.

DeadPlants · Yesterday 17:48

I just hate all these tacky novelty tree decorations, especially the soft ones. I like decorations that reflect light or passes through them. It seems nice glass ones are a thing of the past. I haven't seen anything pretty in years now. Used to get all my decorations in JL but they've gone to shit with all their overpriced childish, tacky junk.
