AIBU by being upset about this confrontation about my puppy?

Sorry if this isn’t the usual post on here, just wondering if anyone can related or has any thoughts! So, I’m a bit shaken. I‘ve just taken my puppy for a walk and she has had some looser bowels today after she disagreed with a type of treat we’ve been giving her. When I took her on a walk earlier, she unexpectedly just went to the toilet right outside someone’s gate. Normally, I walk her through the fields or on the trail but with it being dark i’ve felt safer going through streets with street lights. I got my poo bag out and started picking it up.

As I was doing so, a car arrived just next to me where an older lady (I’d say about 75-80) got out the car where she’d been dropped off. Obviously I felt awkward and when she saw me she snapped “don’t let it mess in my gate!”. I was a bit taken aback so I said “sorry, what?” she then repeated it again but with a swear word or two. I was a bit shocked and said “I always clean it up. I’m so sorry, she normally doesnt go near gates”. She then replied “Yes but I don’t like it!” She was shouting which really threw me off, I think it was partly as I was already having a bad day and this happened. I then apologised again while she was walking to her door and clarified that I don’t encourage her to do that but she is a puppy and has been poorly. She then jist shook her head and slammed the door at me.

So, I want to clarify two things: 1. The mess wasn’t actually inside her drive, it was right outside. I don’t let any of my two dogs inside people’s property or garden. 2. I completely understand not wanting dog mess by your gate and that’s a reasonable request. But I would think most people would understand that dogs can be unpredictable and not be so hostile? 3. I know some people can be particular about their homes and surroundings and I do appreciate that. I have anxiety and I think that is partly what triggered me so much.
I know she could have just had some bad news and reacted in that way, or had some anger about something else. But I feel awful that I upset someone and at the same time a bit annoyed that I was spoken to like this.

Has anyone had anything similar happen with their puppy, and AIBU for thinking this could have been handled better?

No, that’s not the case @maggisimpson . Have you ever been a dog owner at all?

It's impossible to train a dog to poo in a particular place?

Most dogs spend the vast majority of their day at home so surely have much more opportunity to poo there than during the couple of hours they're walking round the block.

Pooing isn’t a behaviour in the same way that those other things are, it’s a bodily process. When a mammal’s bowels decide to move, they move. Have you tried training yourself to poo at a particular time? Let us know how you get on with that. And yes, I’m well aware many people poo at roughly the same time every day (not something I’ve ever been able to do.) That’s not because they have trained themselves to do so 😂

Edited

Everyone is trained to poo in a particular place, what are you talking about 😂People aren't shitting in gutters all over town!

Do you not allow your 3 year old to poo anywhere but at home though?

They go in an appropriate place, they don’t shit right outside someone’s only way out of their home so an elderly lady likely had to deal with poo on her shoes and is poorly able to clean it off.
Astounding that this seems to be such a tough concept to grasp.
If you have trained a wild animal to walk on a lead and probably spend time in a crate, you could take the time to toilet it appropriately, you just don’t want to.

I have a puppy. When she has a dodgy tummy, we keep her in the garden. No need to walk them round residential streets for this exact reason. They don’t need a lot of exercise.

Walking and exercise can get their bowels moving. Like I said in a previous post, my mum's dog will not poo until he has had a walk.

You could train them to poo in a particular spot in the garden. But you could not train them to not need a poo while they happen to be on a walk.

maggisimpson · Yesterday 22:04

YeOldeGreyhound · Yesterday 22:00

How do you train a living being to only need a poo at home?
Do you only poo at home? If they need to go, they need to go.

Dogs can be trained not to poo in the house though, right?
Why can't you train them not to poo in the street too?
Surely they have a lot more access to your garden at home than they do the street?

It is generally accepted that dogs poo outside, and their owners pick it up.
Dogs are not people, and are not held to the same standards as humans, such as shitting in the street.

So you have tried to train him only to poo at home and failed, or you never tried?

No, never tried.

He’s been taught to go outside of the house, whether that’s the garden or otherwise.

just like I taught my children that the place to go is the toilet, whether that’s at home or otherwise.

Do you realise that the act of being on a walk stimulates their digestive system? Regardless of him happily going in the garden, he will probably need one whilst on a walk too.

I clean up after my dog, and he doesn’t shit in the house, so the extent of my toilet training is absolutely fine.

Yes, and they indicate that they want to be let outside.
I don't think you have ever had a dog.

Why not? Presumably your dog has been trained to not shit on your sofa or carpet?
Why does that suddenly become an impossible task when it’s in shared spaces with others?

I see.
Fuck anyone who doesn't want dog shit outside their gate 😂

Mumofyellows · Yesterday 22:06

She sounds like an idiot, ignore her! You picked it up, it wasn’t intentional, some people are just arseholes unfortunately. Agree with taking water next time, I do that if I’m concerned they have upset tummies although they have never actually gone on the pavement. Hope your pup is feeling better.

Because they don't want dog shit in their own garden any more than they want it on their carpet.

Gosh yes I'm sure you scrub the pavement clean.

Because they don't want dog shit in their own garden any more than they want it on their carpet.

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

my dog is as free to shit in my garden as he is in any field, or on any public pavement. It makes absolutely no difference to me - the end result is my picking up shit.

Dog owners don’t have a problem with their dog shitting in their garden.

Oh dear @maggisimpson , you have been given the answers many times now, not sure why you’re not really grasping it.

If a dog is in its home and it needs to poo, it will indicate that it wants to go in the garden. If the dog is out on a walk and needs to poo, it will not be able to indicate that it wants to go into the garden because the garden is somewhere else, so it will do its poo where it happens to be.

My dog knows the difference between inside and outside so he doesn’t poo in my house, nor would he poo in someone else’s house or in a cafe or shop.

If he is outside (whether that’s my garden, a field, a beach or a pavement) and he needs a poo, he will go. I think he probably doesn’t understand the difference between my garden and other outdoor spaces, given that he is a dog.

NewGoldFox · Yesterday 22:11

Mate you can’t honestly be expecting someone to be cheerful about a load of runny shit at their gate.

I take quite a high interest in my dogs fibre intake. His stools are firm. Unless someone is planning on plating their dinner up directing on to the spot he chose to shit on, they won’t know the difference.

MozzieFreeZone · Yesterday 22:13

One of my neighbours has a dog who regularly has an upset tummy. We all know when that happens - poo is not picked up cleanly and there are smears left on the footpath. Not pleasant for anyone.

Lelophants · Yesterday 22:13

aperolspritzbasicbitch · Yesterday 21:52

I’m actually not sure if you are being serious now?

it’s perfectly normal to walk a dog around the streets (I call it walking around the block) for a quick stroll - especially in the darker evenings.

I know it’s normal. My initial post said I know its the cultural norm I just don’t like it but I get over it!
