To click joints in public?

TipsyWriter · Yesterday 13:50

Currently sat in a waiting room, and a girl is sat there and by the seems of things is clicking every bone she has.
I cannot fathom how anyone would think doing this in public is acceptable, surely it’s on par with openly farting in a waiting room?

YABU - clicking joints in public is fine.
YANBU - publicly unacceptable, go to a toilet or your car to do it.

I don't think I would equate it with farting in public, but I also don't think it's particularly polite to repeatedly pop or click your joints where others have to hear it. It's a fingernails on the chalkboard type sound that makes me cringe. However I can imagine that some people might do it almost without even noticing, possibly unaware that it could annoy someone around them.

Two of my children do this constantly and it makes me feel queasy. They know not to do it front of me anymore . I have to admit that if I was in your position I'd have to leave the waiting room and sit elsewhere while waiting for my appointment. Saying that since I've hit peri Menopause I cannot tolerate most sounds and am constantly grumpy over joe publics constant noises!

I have hEDS. Every single one of my joints 'clicks' because I have to constantly relocate them - if I don't relocate them I will be in immense pain. This woman (or child, unclear given you used girl) may well be in the same boat. I don't do it to annoy other people, frankly I don't give other people a second thought. If my shoulder clunks when I move it I assure you it hurts me more than it does you.

Of course it's not like farting, ffs. It's literally just a sound. It's not emitting anything from the body.

You might not like the sound, but so what? Someone else might not like the sound of you clearing your throat or sighing or getting something out of your bag or speaking or any number of other things, but that's life.

Although the woman in the waiting room might be doing it deliberately, you do realise that loads of people's joints also just click a lot naturally, surely? One of my ankles cracks spontaneously all the time and so do my knuckles. There's nothing I can do about that so I'm afraid people have to lump it. I also sometimes have to crack my neck to regain flexibility.

I hate hate HATE the sound of joints clicking it puts my teeth on edge, but of course it's not like farting. I would quietly seethe but wouldn't expect anyone to not do it.

I came on to say exactly this - my son has hEDS and is constantly having to click his joints back into place. He would definitely rather not have to and is certainly not doing it to be rude.
