Would you have gone Appleless?

Name changed. I looked after someone else's 3 year old today. Made biscuits, took them to the park, took them swimming. I am trying to lose weight. Had healthy breakfast but thought I'd take an apple for after swimming then have soup when I got home. Made packed lunch for child (and my child who also came). As we were getting changed child spotted apple in my bag. Wanted apple. I said no as it was my lunch and they had a big packed lunch. They cried, moaned, whinged. I could understand that they were hungry after the swim but then we got in the car and I handed over their lunch - sandwiches, crisps, veg sticks, fruit. But no apple. All I could hear all the way home was "I wanted appppppleeee" Floods of tears.

I ate my apple as I was driving. It was lovely. Crunchy. Juicy. Tasty. I enjoyed it. AIBU? Would you have handed over your apple? As soon as we got home I gave the child an apple. Did they eat it? Course not. One bite then left on the sofa.

I wouldn’t have given them my apple, but I might have waited until getting home to eat it!

likelysuspect · Today 19:21

He's 3

He eats what is prepared for him.

Although I wouldnt have eaten the apple in front of him because that would just encourage extra loud whining Im sure. I would want to save my ears.

HumerousHumous · Today 19:22

No I wouldn’t have given them the apple. You were NBU.

Before opening the thread I was thinking this was about iPads or iPhones! Grin Edited to add: as Apple was capitalised!

dontaskmeanythinginthemorning · Today 19:23

No, you did the right thing although, as in a PP, I wouldn’t have eaten mine in front of him! Children need to learn early on about these things and I bet that child is already indulged by his parents and gets whatever he whines for, that’s why he persisted for so long.

You were a bit of a prick to eat an apple in front of a toddler whilst they were crying for it to be honest!

RedSpotTeaPot · Today 21:18

I'd have cut the apple in half and given him half.
Then had the other apple when I got home.

MaggotDonkey · Today 21:21

Twat behaviour to eat it in front of him. Not unreasonable to not share it.

tomorrowfollowstoday · Today 21:23

Yeah, I'd have offered them the apple.

Velumental · Today 21:29

For goodness sake it was an apple. If you're taking fruit pack enough fruit for all of you? My very fussy child would choose fruit over standard 'kid food' any day. You sound mental. Your friend who left their child with you can't know you'd be a dick toa. 3 yr old

This. It sounds like you delighted in eating it in front of him.

didnttellasoul · Today 21:34

I would have given him the apple, yes.

Antoniana · Today 21:45

What everyone said- you didn’t need to give them the apple, but eating it in front of them is quite spiteful.

Hadalifeonce · Today 21:49

But the children had a.packed lunch containing fruit, so I don't see a problem with the OP eating her apple at the same time as they had their food.

LilyBunch25 · Today 21:49

Weird. Plus you aren't supposed to eat while you're driving.

Leavemetonguetied · Today 21:54

I would have danced and sung a 20 minute musical number named "it's my Apple not yours" and performed it at full volume in the leisure centre lobby.

LeopardOnEverything · Today 21:59

It's a fucking apple. Of course I'd have given it to a 3yo. If you don't like this child enough to do that, you shouldn't be looking after them.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · Today 22:00

Holy crap I would not have eaten it in front of him!

It’s not “your lunch” if you got home where there were other apples within a short space of time. And you had soup when you got home, which was your actual lunch. It was just an item you also wanted.

I cannot possibly imagine enjoying an apple (and clearly savouring it from the words you’ve used) in front of a child who was crying for said apple.

Maybe I wouldn’t have handed it over, but I probably would tbh. I might have swapped it for something out of their lunch if I was really hungry, at a push.

Honestly, no adult needs to have an apple at such a specific time that they need to eat it in front of a tiny child who wants it. An apple doesn’t make you any less hungry anyway.

hanabanana9 · Today 22:14

Some people are real knobheads with their responses. You’ve taught the child a life lesson - you can’t always have what you want! If there was nothing else on offer I’m sure you’d have given them the apple, point is, they had other options, they’re a child, they get what they’re given.

Happyjoe · Today 22:15

Nah, it's amusing and am sure the kid will get over it! Kid kicked off for not getting what he/she wanted (and didn't want anyway really). I probably would've done the same in a moment of pettiness and eaten it too.

If the little one not kicked off I would've been more inclined to have let them have it but not supposed to give into temper tantrums eh?

Aussiesgettingsmashed · Today 22:15

Eating an Apple whilst driving is incredibly dangerous and a criminal offence. You’re very fortunate your reckless gluttony didn’t result in a night in a prison cell.
