Been away for a few days (had a 2 week half term). Neighbour has been feeding the cat - just about to get in the car last week and told dd15 to check all the upstairs doors were shut. Came downstairs- yeah yeah, all done mum.

Come back; my bed is covered in cat shit and piss, duvet, mattress and sheets including electric blanket all ruined .

Should lhave trusted a 15 year old with such a responsibility?! Or done it my fucking self.

Cat did have a litter tray by the way and is not capable of opening a door so l have to assume she didn't do it - so pissed off and room stin

So the person feeding your cat probably had a little nosey around and accidentally locked the cat in the bedroom for a couple of days. Then realised the food wasn’t being eaten, and went and let it back out again.

That is the most likely explanation.

I'd be really surprised because she has been doing it for years if we go away for a couple of nights or so but you might be right

You say the cat was out when you left.
How did the cat get into the bedroom ? It clearly at some point was locked in the bedroom for longer than one day and night.
I would not let whoever it was looking after your poor cat look after it ever again.

He most definitely was out when we left, l know he was.

In which case the person looking after it put the cat in the bedroom, or opened the door and allowed the cat in the bedroom. Then closed the poor cat in.
And let it out just before you came back.
I feel very sorry for the cat who will have been distressed at not being able to use the litter tray. Cats are quite clean animals usually.

So the person with access to your house when you were away has accidentally locked him in the bedroom whilst snooping.

Irritableowlwan · 28/10/2026 18:09

Do not pin blame on your child when you knew you would be away and should have checked the windows yourself. Always a shoddy workman blaming their tools 🙄

She would have no reason to do this though? They feed him and let him out then let him in at night and feed him again. He never ever has accidents.

Do any snoopers have reason to? I'm not saying that's what happened. But either your cat has behaved out of character or your cat sitter has.

Tbh if he never has accidents then DD probably didn't think there was much harm in the car entering a bedroom anyway. She wouldn't have predicted it.

Skybluecoat · 28/10/2026 18:18

They have done it by accident when snooping. Cat has darted into room unseen.

It is the only logical solution. Unless by coincidence the door was left open and the cat has suddenly decided to shit and piss in your bed. It’s incredibly unlikely.

The only reason your cat has been to the loo in your bedroom is because they could not get out of it for a considerable amount of time.
They went in or were put in, door closed, and could not get out until someone let them out.
Clearly she did not let him out or let him back in at some point during your holiday.

TheLastSilverSaint · 28/10/2026 18:31

If your cat shat and pissed all over your bed despite being let in and out, and also has a litter tray, I think your cat sitter has fucked up somehow.

I strongly suspect they opened the bedroom door for whatever reason - could be snooping but could also be loads of other reasons, we don’t know - and then shut it again without realising the cat was in there one day.

Either way, you really can’t blame your DD because simply don’t know it was her fault, and frankly I suspect it wasn’t, especially if your cat is housetrained. If he doesn’t usually shit on the beds when you’re home, there’s no reason he’d do that while you were away purely because the door was open and the bed was there. He must have been locked in there.

This is the most logical explanation- l wonder if the cat sitter sent her daughter around one day and she snooped as l trust my neighbour 100% - l feed her pets when she is away too

All the people saying that cats are clean animals and would never do this if they had a choice... I know a cat who will defecate on its owners bed if they go away for a couple of nights and don't lock it out of their bedroom despite a trusted cat sitter visiting regularly. If the cat can't access the bed it does it on the rug instead. My cats also urinate in unexpected places when we go away for a night or two even though my parents visit numerous times a day and pander to their every need, and they get let in and out and have multiple litter trays. It's a way of expressing stress/ a form of dirty protest. We tend to put the cats into a cattery now and they seem to be much happier there.

Yes, my neighbour's neurotic cat shits on the doormat when they're away. It's really tiresome for a cat feeder! But then her thyroid is shot to shit so maybe the OP's cat needs checking out.

My cat has to be shut out the bathroom otherwise when she is in a mood she shits on the plug hole 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ whole house open but no you don’t share your chicken??!!! Shit in the bath.

I bet someone snooped and shut the cat in by accident though for it to be covered and the tray clean. Possibly the sitters daughter. Or the door wasn’t shut, sitter went to check doors where shut. Shut it not realising cat was in there and then the next day oooooo shit.

Catza · 28/10/2026 19:38

OP, you don't mention if the door to the bedroom was closed or open when you got back. I think that would reveal a lot about what may have happened.

QueenOfAccountability · 28/10/2026 19:43

Why did you ask your daughter to close all the bedroom doors?

Ohnobackagain · 28/10/2026 19:47

My neighbour’s cat once took exception to her going away for just a few days. Had a tray and everything, was out via cat flap etc. I went in and there was a bad smell so went to look - cat had had a dirty protest on the upstairs landing and bathroom. Shit everywhere. None in the tray @durdledoris

You've just reminded me that one of our cats started peeing in the bath over the plughole when it was little. I thought that might be quite a good alternative to using a litter tray until we came home after a few nights away to find cat pee all over the bath and the shower curtain. It took weeks to get rid of the smell.

Trekker77 · 28/10/2026 22:38

The cat was annoyed that you dare leave it alone in the house. My friend had the same thing happen. They left their cat sitter staying in their house for a few days. The cat was free to roam inside and out (cat door) and the cat sitter didn't go upstairs at all during their stay (as they had a bedroom downstairs). When my friend arrived home they discovered that the cat had shit all over their bed as a protest to being abandoned. Nothing wrong with the cat and has not done it since so its just their way of saying that they miss you. Lovely isn't it!

HappyViewer · 28/10/2026 22:43

Is your cat poorly?

Flamingojune · 28/10/2026 22:45

We leave all the interior doors open and the cat has never done anything like that

Uniqueusername3 · 28/10/2026 22:49
  1. It's perfectly normal to go on even longer holidays and leaving a cat at home. Cat owners don't just not go on holiday. And they certainly don't take cats with them.
  1. Perfectly normal for cats to dirty protest. He's specifically chosen your bed because you have pissed him off.
  1. You should have checked, door might not have been shut fully and cat has pried it open. Mine can open a door if it's not latched fully
