Stick it out or rent elsewhere

This year we finally managed to sell our house after a lengthy process (for so many reasons!) we were so happy to finally have it done and to find our forever home.

Until the seller pulled out.

As it was supposed to be a short term thing we stayed with my parents(their suggestion/offer).. but now its not a short term thing while we find/purchase a new home I don’t know what to do. It is not harmonious living.

We live in an adjoined annexe so have some privacy but share certain parts of the house. we have three primary aged children and my parents ALWAYS have something to say about how we are raising them. They are reasonably chilled kids but one is currently being assessed for Autism and does have the odd meltdown (think high functioning Asperger’s type child) which we are already struggling with, without being told we are spoiling them etc. we don’t let them have do/certain things - my parents let them and then complain about the behaviour.

my DS (31) also lives with my parents officially. Seeing as it is a commuter town she stays with them rather than rent in central London. She sometimes isn’t here for weeks but when she is she is very highly strung and doesn’t like it when people make virtually any noise in the house during her working hours. Being on half term at the moment it makes it especially difficult but even during school term she asks me to take the dog out just in case it barks at someone like the postman while she is working. I am expected to be out of the house so often and I resent being told what to do with my day.

all of this I could put up with, but on top of this my parents expect me to pay rent and bills, while DS pays nothing towards the house despite earning more than mine and DHs combined income. if we were making a big saving towards our next home I feel like I could justify it but at this point I feel we may as well rent and get more privacy. We do pay less than a proper rental would be so DH is encouraging us to stick it out a bit longer.

I do get that this is their permanent home and I feel like I should be more grateful. But I just don’t feel welcome.
I am really struggling and just feel in the way all the time, surely it’s not worth this?

Oh just to add we stayed with them in the short term because there was going to be a gap of about five weeks between selling our home and the purchase of the new house going through. In case anyone asks why we didn’t go from our house to the new directly

They also don’t want us to move any furniture in the annexe even though some of it is wildly impractical with three young children and we wanted to do it to avoid anything getting broken. We are all tiptoeing around crystal paperweights

I would rent elsewhere. Rent a place for 6 months, this is no way to live. I’ll rather pay for the convenience and have my peace than live in that sort of condition just to save a few hundred pounds. The only issue is if it’ll be easy to get a rental. Have you been looking at other houses to buy?

If you stay I think you have to suck up your parents unhelpful comments.

I didn't think you need to suck up your sister's bullshit though. You are living there just as she is and she needs to compromise. The fact you are paying rent and she's only there specifically could arguably mean that she has less right to demand what you do!

So I'd be having a blunt chat with your sister along those lines. But if this can't be sorted I'd leave.
