hello!
i am trying to find a restaurant within 40mins of high wycombe that would be suitable for an 80th birthday

the key thing is i want a round or square table where 13 people can sit around, rather than a long table.
so we can have a more shared conversational meal.

it should be a fairly special meal.

we usually go to a restaurant in marlow for this kind of thing.

i don’t know the area at all.

does anywhere spring to mind?

Bit niche for AIBU

Pootles34 · 26/10/2026 20:29

Probably want to state the area in your title too.

I’d look for restaurants with private rooms, a round table for that sort of number is going to be difficult to shout across in a busy restaurant

Massive plug for the Sir Charles Napier in Chinnor, it’s about 20-25 mins from High Wycombe. Mainly because I was taken to it for a special birthday and the food was fantastic, the vibe lovely. I should think they can make it work for you, give them a call?

There must be literally thousands within 40 minutes of High Wycombe - it takes you in to Oxford, Henley, the Chilterns, Gerrards Cross, the Chalfonts etc, even greater London, Hertfordshire etc..
What sort of place are you looking for? Pub, restaurant?

I do know that at the far end of your area No 1 Ship Street in Oxford has a round table in their private dining room - but it’s a steep climb onto the third floor, so not ideal for your older relative?

what i’ve been really struggling to find is a round table for 13 rather than a long stretched out table.

a good roast, an italian, french, contemporary british,
it almost doesn’t matter so long as the table is round and we can talk around it.

This makes me think of The Chefs Table at Crockers in Tring. A little more entertainment than cosy chats though.

The grove Watford

I do see what you mean and why you’re punting for recommendations here, I have tried all kinds of searches and it’s really difficult to find this kind of information isn’t it? A lot of the places seem to deliberately hide what their rooms look like.

The Griffin in Old Amersham does seem to have multiple spaces and to promote themselves as being flexible, but I’ve never eaten there so no idea what it’s like.

Lavvin in Marlow is excellent, as is the ivy. Ivy definitely has large round tables, worth asking lavvin. Also try picolinos marlow in the back room. Charles Napier is good, what about quod in Oxford? All v good places, if large round tables for that no aren’t available any of them can push square or rectangular tables together.

if you want a private room, there’s one on the first floor of the vanilla pod, marlow which is proper old school french

The Vicar’s Room at the Hind’s Head in Bray might suit?
