AIBU to be furious at DS15 over his behaviour and holiday footwear choices?

We’ve just landed in Florida for a week-long family holiday. There’s me, DH, DS13 and DS15. We spent a fortune before we came out getting everyone kitted out with new clothes and brand-new trainers—including a lovely pair of Nike Dunks for DS15.

We picked out his travel outfit together: hoodie, baggy joggers, and his box-fresh Dunks with classic white Nike socks. Looked great.

Fast forward to checking into the hotel last night. DS15 is sitting on the armchair, his joggers ride up, and I notice... no socks. (He spent all summer going sockless in old knackered Vans and Astro turf boots which I didn't mind because they were already ruined, but still!). Anyway, I went into their room later and it absolutely reeked. Turns out he wore his brand-new Dunks with no socks for the entire journey here! 🤢

This morning, before heading to the theme parks, we wanted a family photo. DH and DS13 look great in fresh shorts and new trainers with ankle socks. DS15? Sockless again.

I gently pointed out that:

  1. He’s going to get horrific blisters in the Florida heat.
  2. He’s going to completely ruin his new Dunks in days.
  3. The trainer smell is already vile.

He kicked off in front of everyone, telling me to "grow up," "get a life," and "what’s it got to do with me?!"

Later, I popped back to the room for suncream and thought I'd take him a pair of trainer socks just in case. Had a quick nosey in his suitcase... there are literally zero socks in his entire bag. He has actively planned and packed to go sockless for the whole week.

DH says to leave him to it, but we are the ones sharing a room and hire car with his melting, stinking feet! AIBU to be furious with his behaviour and choices!

Travel outfits????? family photos????? box fresh shoes???
With the smelly feet exception and I'd get him some foot and shoe spray for that....I am definitely team son.
Yes he could have phrased it more politely but come on......get a blooming grip.

While I think you should let it go on an aesthetic level (looking good in photos), I absolutely think you’re right to pull him up on it on a hygiene level. If his Mum can’t outright tell him he stinks and get him to do something about it, what chance does a future girlfriend have and why TF should she put up with a stinky man! I hope he gets over his ego and sorts his stinky feet out.

Sending solidarity as I have a manchild 35 year old brother who lives with our Mum and smells and she’s never done a damn thing about it. When he visits me (a 3 hour car journey), I send him straight up to the shower 🤮 he complains at me every time for pointing it out but I will not have a grown man stinking out MY HOUSE!

Surely this must be the plimsoll troll. Nobody could post this nonsense.

My son is four and already won’t wear outfits I pick 😂

Put some anti bacterial powder in his shoes when he’s not looking.

Honestly I think you need to take a step back. Let him get blisters and learn the point of socks. If you intervene, he won’t learn..

Yeah, so you said.

TheWonderhorse · 26/10/2026 21:44

I'm trying to imagine a universe where I get to make clothing choices for my teens 🤣.

I can give advice like weather updates, activity requirements and that's all. They choose everything about how they look. I am an old fart who knows nothing. All is as it should be.

Fieldmiceears · 26/10/2026 22:40

-Why?? So weird. Let the poor kid go without socks if he wants. He will get the natural consequences in time

Op never existed in the first place. AI nonsense.

Wordsmithery · 26/10/2026 22:44

Sorry OP you sound excessively controlling and image-conscious. Isn't it time he found his own style and chose his own clothes? It's all part of growing up.

Jimmyjumpy · 26/10/2026 23:16

Lets hope he gets massive blisters and everyone tells him his feet stink. All you can do really.

Yep - who on earth writes like this in real life?
Answers in a numbered list please.

It all sounds very OTT to have matching outfits & to be posing for photos.

I think there are far worse things a 15yo could be doing. This is really controlling of you.

I’m done with washing several pairs of socks every week, even in summer & I would be happy if DS decided it wasn’t his style any longer (to wear socks with everything even crocs).

Does DS even like Nike dunks or have you decided that’s what he should be wearing?

Travel outfits?!

A few years ago, a family in our village couldn’t go away for their summer holiday probs Covid times). They subsequently sold their child’s (brand new) summer holiday outfits for £50. To me!! A whole bag of brand new clothes from joules and Boden.

It was rather wonderful and saw my children through a few summers. But it opened my eyes to people buying a “holiday wardrobe” which I find so bizarre.

We are away for half term. I would only buy my dc new things if they’d grown out of their clothes. It’s a holiday, not a fashion show. So odd. I wonder if the OP buys a fresh set of uniform every September too 😂

I wouldn't book a holiday in October in Florida either because it is hurricane season.

I wouldn't book a holiday in Florida at all because people like the OP go there. Box fresh holiday outfits...f-me.

HollyhockDays · Yesterday 07:50

If this is true you need to take a huge step back. What’s more important a nice holiday with your so or the endless aesthetics for instagram. You seem very concerned at how you all “look”. Picking a travel outfit for a 15 year old is weird.

I’ve got a few friends who buy “holiday wardrobes.”

One was spending two weeks in Cornwall last summer and was running around the week before they went, stressing herself out buying holiday outfits for themselves/husband and children.

We went to Cornwall for two weeks as well. I shoved some clothes in bags for life for us all from our wardrobes, not that many as I always make sure I book accommodation with a washing machine so we don’t have to take much, and that was job done. Literally just grabbed a coupe of handfuls out of our wardrobes and called it a day 🤣🤣 we were going to sit on beaches, eat in pubs and walk. The fuck would I buy anything new for that, or for a holiday anywhere.

It reads like the hairy handed musings of a foot fetishy nonce, doesn't it?

Same. We might buy a new tshirt or hoodie when we’re on holiday. But otherwise we just pack normal clothes. Obviously we’d pack one or two smarter things if we knew we’d be eating somewhere smart.

We also take any trainers that are on their last legs and use them as beach/water shoes for canoeing etc and then bin/recycle them before we leave.

This is a wind up — too many rage bait elements, picking out travel outfits, going to Florida/USA etc. Who has time on a Florida holiday to post that long a post anyway 😂.

Muchtoomuchtodo · Yesterday 11:01

Pick your battles wisely at that age. This isn’t one I’d choose.

estrogone · Yesterday 11:04

This cannot be real. Who dresses their 15 year old for staged holiday pics??? Mad

Tamtim · Yesterday 11:20

Sharing space with someone whose feet stink would make me furious too. Buy him some foot deodorant. It sounds like the brand new shoes are already good for the bin if they already stink.

sashh · Yesterday 11:24

You can get shoe deodorant.
