AIBU to be furious at DS15 over his behaviour and holiday footwear choices?

We’ve just landed in Florida for a week-long family holiday. There’s me, DH, DS13 and DS15. We spent a fortune before we came out getting everyone kitted out with new clothes and brand-new trainers—including a lovely pair of Nike Dunks for DS15.

We picked out his travel outfit together: hoodie, baggy joggers, and his box-fresh Dunks with classic white Nike socks. Looked great.

Fast forward to checking into the hotel last night. DS15 is sitting on the armchair, his joggers ride up, and I notice... no socks. (He spent all summer going sockless in old knackered Vans and Astro turf boots which I didn't mind because they were already ruined, but still!). Anyway, I went into their room later and it absolutely reeked. Turns out he wore his brand-new Dunks with no socks for the entire journey here! 🤢

This morning, before heading to the theme parks, we wanted a family photo. DH and DS13 look great in fresh shorts and new trainers with ankle socks. DS15? Sockless again.

I gently pointed out that:

  1. He’s going to get horrific blisters in the Florida heat.
  2. He’s going to completely ruin his new Dunks in days.
  3. The trainer smell is already vile.

He kicked off in front of everyone, telling me to "grow up," "get a life," and "what’s it got to do with me?!"

Later, I popped back to the room for suncream and thought I'd take him a pair of trainer socks just in case. Had a quick nosey in his suitcase... there are literally zero socks in his entire bag. He has actively planned and packed to go sockless for the whole week.

DH says to leave him to it, but we are the ones sharing a room and hire car with his melting, stinking feet! AIBU to be furious with his behaviour and choices!

he is probably rebelling because his mum is still trying to pick him clothes...

Boreded · 26/10/2026 19:38

Walmart! Or the outlets.

Nlsa · 26/10/2026 19:39

you could just let him get blisters

and let his friends tell him his feet and shoes stink

and then throw them out without replacing them

pictoosh · 26/10/2026 19:39

Sounds par for the 15 yr old course.
15 yr olds...often headstrong, chippy and daft.

Lay off about the bloody socks. It's not worth it. Trust.

Asuitablecat · 26/10/2026 19:41
  1. Is it dangerous?
  2. Will it cost me money?
  3. Is it actually affecting me?

If the answers to any of those questions is no, then I don't really care. It has led to fairly harmonious teenage years so far.

Yetanotherone12 · 26/10/2026 19:44

New wardrobes for 4 people and agreeing “outfits” for teenagers?

bloody hell.

my mum used to do this to us. Back off.

Autumnallaround · 26/10/2026 19:45

I don't wear socks with trainers. I hate the feeling. I wrap a trainer sock around the sole. Then change daily.

Createausername1970 · 26/10/2026 19:45

Sending commiserations.

My (ND) son, now 24 rarely wears socks and hasn't done for years.

Yes, he gets blisters, yes his trainers smell.

Blisters are his problem, trainers get regularly sprayed with Febreeze and/or put into washing machine. His money if they fall apart quicker.

It seriously isn't worth creating a fuss over.

Ineedabeerorseven · 26/10/2026 19:45

There are lots of parents with teenage boys who would love this to be their problem.

It really is a non issue. Chill out. He gets blisters, he gets blisters. He’ll learn (well, he probably won’t but that’s his problem).

PinkJ · 26/10/2026 20:05

Jeeez is that all you've got to worry about you loon, lucky you! 😆🤨😳 FFS

Motheranddaughter · 26/10/2026 20:18

You seem over invested in how your family dress/ look
Who on earth picks out a 15 year olds clothes

Billy47 · 26/10/2026 20:23

The way he talked to you is outrageous. I wouldnt be tolerating that. Although, I do think you need ti stop policing his socks.

HowHaveYouFoundThis · 26/10/2026 20:26

Op hope your ok, this is a massive over reaction

likeafishneedsabike · 26/10/2026 20:30

RedThroatedWarbler · 26/10/2026 19:01

How utterly mortifying for him that his mummy still chooses clothes for him at 15.
'We' wanted family photos.
Popped back to the room on a spurious excuse to root through his case.

Everything seems so superficial and suffocating here, all for image and no substance. I am not surprised he is starting to backlash.

For some reason the Beckhams are springing to mind.

I hate socks and never wear them. I have Nike air force that are 3 years old and don't stink at all and trust me I would be told if they did.

But you have dainty odourless lady feet.

Men's feet produce far stronger odours.

Zippidydoodah · 26/10/2026 20:39

Jesus Christ

ThoughtYouKnewAlready · 26/10/2026 20:40

On the internet, I have come across people with a fetish for plimsolls. Maybe some have a thing for ‘box fresh’ trainers…

khakipant · 26/10/2026 20:45

YABU for repeatedly using the phrase “Dunks” and saying your DS looked “lovely” in a hoodie,
joggers and trainers.

Comeinsideforacupoftea · 26/10/2026 20:45

OP if this is genuine are you some sort of content creator? Is that why you're so unnaturally obsessed with how your entire family look? Whether you have an online career or just like to show off on instagram a lot it seems entirely probable that DS is completely done with being your prop. Good for him!

The entire purpose of the Florida theme parks is 2 weeks of uncomplicated fun not giving a stuff what people think of you and making family memories. Who gives a crap what you look like. You might only have a year or 2 more with your lad to make these memories before he decides he's too cool to travel with you any more and you're stressing over a pair of socks?! Whether you need his compliance for your online street cred or not surely you realise how ridiculous you're being? Hakuna your matatas and just go and enjoy this precious time with your family.

Frenzi · 26/10/2026 20:46

He's 15 - of course he knows best! Let him get on with it - insist that he washes his feet every night if they stink and that his trainers get put outside on a balcony/window sill.

He will soon wear sock when he gets blisters.

Pick your battles.

Have a lovely holiday.

IButtleSir · 26/10/2026 20:49

If you are involved in helping a 15 year old pick out his outfit, then I'm afraid I agree with your son that you need to get a life. My three year old chooses what to wear each day, so I'm sure your son can manage, including making the choice about whether or not to wear socks.

khakipant · 26/10/2026 20:49

viques · 26/10/2026 18:50

I have always been amazed at families who kit themselves out head to toe in new clothes to sit in a metal tube of recycled air for several hours in front of total strangers. Does it have a name? Performance travelling?

Chavelling.

hot2trotter · 26/10/2026 20:54

Take your son's advice and get a life

Sausageplait · 26/10/2026 21:13

Your post reeks of an over investment in appearance. Box fresh trainers, picking an outfit to go on a plane, photographs with Ithe importance of clothes being mentioned . I imagine your son is fed up with having to fulfil your expectations all the time.

Sonato · 26/10/2026 21:16

Far too controlling given he's 15

"Picked out his outfit together"

Blimey

My mum couldn't have named three items in rotation in my wardrobe at 15

The importance you put on looking "fresh" and everyone looking "just so" is odd, id have found that stifling at his age too.
