Would you spend your 50th at Disneyland?

Headdoesntfeelclear · 26/10/2026 12:03

Would this be weird?

I'm definitely not a Disney adult 🤣
My Dd has wanted to go for a few years, by my 50th (just over a year away) she will be 9, and it feels like time is running out to take her and for it to be magical.
As cheesy as it sounds, i'm happy to go as it makes me happy to see her happy. Of course I would rather be on a beach in Hawaii, but can't afford that and love Paris and we can see the sights and show her Paris too

It just seems a bit 😂 to spend your 50th there. The last time I was in Paris was for my 30th when we got engaged

The OP asked 'Would you ...' so 'No I wouldn't' is a reasonable reply.

Yeah you’re right it is…except those aren’t the replies.

So fat people who like Disney have been called immature, Peter Pan adults, I’m sure there were others. People have also gone to extremes by saying that they’d rather hit their head off a wall, stab their eyes out, or have wasps in their arse.

A simple ‘No I wouldn’t’ would have been perfectly reasonable 🤷‍♀️

I like to go to local cafés, drink nice coffee and pastries and watch the world go by.
I like to go to interesting museums.
I like to walk to interesting natural features - up hills, round lakes etc
I like to walk along beaches and do a bit of rock pooling, stone throwing etc with the kids
We like to try ice creams.

See my replies to the other poster. Epcot! It has multiple restaurants and cafes throughout, each in the style of the country in which they’re situated.

Also the whole of Orlando is a melting pot of culture and there are activities and food/restaurants to try all over.

It isn’t the same as quiet towns, but there is plenty there to suit those who like that.

That’s not true. I took you up on your offer and you came back with a response that did not convince me to go to Disney. I am fairly certain I will never go to Florida. I’d say 99% sure. I don’t know why that offends you and why you’re so defensive about Disney. It’s almost like you’re being paid to advertise it, but I’d be surprised if the capitalist behemoth that is Disney needs you to advertise it on MN. But then again the CoL is hitting hard worldwide so maybe footfall in the parks is declining.

I have actually been to a Disney park. I went to Disneyland California in the late 80s when I was a child. We spent one day there. I had a good time but actually enjoyed San Francisco and Santa Cruz more, even as an 11 year-old. The biggest thrill of the trip was buying the Neneh Cherry album in Tower Records in LA before it was on sale in the UK. That gave me bragging rights when I got home!

I’m going to be sticking to my UK and Europe holidays if it’s all the same to you.

It isn’t meant to convince you to go. It’s meant to make you realise that you wouldn’t hate it, and there are things you absolutely would enjoy about it.

If I were you I wouldn’t go, you wouldn’t get the same out of it as someone else might and it’s far cheaper to travel to other places with real cultural sites, but if you did go you wouldn’t absolutely enjoy it, I’m certain of it, and that’s the point I’m trying to make.

People act as though they couldn’t possibly enjoy it, but they’re wrong. There is absolutely something for everyone, if they go with an open mind.

I am sure you are right @Boreded in so far as most people could probably find something they would like in the Orlando area if they went with a positive attitude. I honestly can't think of anywhere I have been where I have been unable to find something enjoyable to do, and even the places I have least liked have had some redeeming features. I don't doubt that there are some interesting things to see and do in the theme parks and surrounding area but I still won't be going. Not because I think Orlando is objectively "bad" but because life is short, the world is huge and there are lots of places which appeal to me far more.
I feel much the same about Disney/Orlando as I do about skiing or a beach holiday in the Caribbean. If for some reason I found myself in one of those situations I would make the best of it and hopefully find aspects of the trip fun and interesting, but I wouldn't choose to do any of them.
The USA as a whole is pretty low on my wish list currently but if I did go there are loads of places I'd prioritise over Orlando, due to my personal interests and preferences. Not some kind of anti Orlando vendetta, just the fact that with limited time and money for travel I'm not going to spend any of it on somewhere that doesn't attract me on the off chance that I'm wrong, when there are plenty of places, many much nearer and less expensive, that I really do want to visit. Surely that's a fairly common view? Why does it matter if people don't want to visit Orlando, or anywhere else come to that?

I couldn’t care less if they don’t want to visit. I don’t like that people are downright rude if you say you like Disney. Just on this thread alone people have been called immature and Peter Pan adults. Others have said they would rather stab their eyes out. The irony being that those people are the ones being childish.

I know that Disney is not going to be the everyone’s cup of tea, but I wholeheartedly disagree that it is better to have wasps in your arse as one person said, or that anyone would hate the trip. I just want people not to be rude and judgemental just because someone likes Disney, it’s not a character flaw. You mentioned skiing for example, I couldn’t think of a worse trip for me, but I would still enjoy it, and I wouldn’t call people who go on skiing trips names because of it, we all like different things and that’s ok.

The question was put about Disney for a 50th and some have said no. I’d challenge you to find where I’ve ‘shat’ on people who go to Disney. I’ve simply put it’s my idea of hell. Notice the use of the possessive determiner ‘my’. Glad to hear so many people love it. I’m just not one of them.

Nothing I’ve read has convinced me otherwise and I’m not sure why we need to justify our holiday choices to you. My last significant birthday destination was up a mountain in the pissing rain with a thermos of tea and a cheese and pickle sandwich. I imagine many posters would say that’s their idea of hell. I can quite understand but won’t insult them all. Difference is fine surely?

VividPinkTraybake · 27/10/2026 18:03

Do you want to? That's all that matters don't listen to all the people here in a competition to see who can be the most "funny" about Disney land. Mumsnet can get very bee in the bonnet about certain things and Disney is one.

Although Park Asterix is is a much better park in my opinion....

Nannamads · 27/10/2026 18:14

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest. The fact that i was able to make memories with my child would be the most important thing.

You haven’t replied or tagged me but I’m thinking this was meant for me.

I didn’t refer to you, I referred to the people who said that people who like Disney are immature, or that would rather have wasps in their arse. The ones who are rude to people based on their holiday choices.

I can absolutely see why it could be someone’s idea of hell, in the non-literal sense obviously. But you aren’t being rude like other posters so I’m not sure why you think you’ve been lumped in with the others. FWIW I love being rained on, but I’m getting a camping vibe from what you’re saying and that would be my idea of hell to be honest 🤣

But nobody has to justify their holiday choices to me or to anyone else, they just need to not be arseholes to people who choose Disney as their holiday.

Oh I went there as a teen, my friend was in an accident on a ride, fortunately we had been arguing that morning so we had been giving each other space and going round with other people or I would have been on it too.

It was one of those big raft rides, it fell backwards down the ramp and she was thrown out.

momtoboys · 27/10/2026 19:33

I wouldn't go to Disneyland if someone paid me to go.

Ponderingwindow · 27/10/2026 19:35

I’m not a Disney adult, but the hyper organization and cleanliness makes it one of my happy places. I would be thrilled to spend a milestone birthday there.

Waitingfordoggo · 27/10/2026 19:35

I just don’t understand why you’re so defensive @Boreded.

I love camping. Absolutely love it. I’ve lost count of the number of people who’ve told me they’d rather <perform painful-sounding self-inflicted injury> than go camping. Rather than try to tell them they are wrong, I believe them. Because very obviously camping is not for everyone. Nor is Disney.

Actually these days we have a touring caravan. Quite a lot of people think caravanning is weird or sad. They are entitled to that view and I don’t mind people taking the piss out of it. I take the piss out of it myself sometimes, because it is kind of weird to drive a tin box on wheels into a field and live in it for a week. I love it though.

By the way, the ‘poke eyes out’/‘stuff wasps up arse’ type of comments are very typical British humour. I really don’t think you need to take it so seriously, nor be so affronted by it.

I won’t be going to Disney because I know I wouldn’t like it. It represents pretty much everything that I dislike. I’m pretty keen on minimising my impact on the environment and I suspect holidays like Disney and cruises have a fairly negative impact on the planet, much more so than me driving/taking a ferry to Europe and staying on a campsite. I also hate flying as I’ve mentioned in previous posts. I also don’t like spending £££££ on holidays. I also like taking my dog on holiday and I can’t take him to Disney. I’d miss him while I was away. I do know better than you do whether or not I would enjoy Disney and I assure you I would not.

Waitingfordoggo · 27/10/2026 19:36

Because those comments are constant, and come with the nasty comments about being Peter Pan adults and being immature.

I do not and would not go camping, twice was enough to put me off for life, but I’m not going to insult anyone who enjoys it. Because I’m not rude.

Waitingfordoggo · 27/10/2026 20:17

To be fair @Boreded , you seem to have changed your tune as the thread has gone on.

Initially you wanted people to tell you what they like doing on holiday because you believed you could tell them something about Disney they’d enjoy. This turned out not to be the case so then your complaint has become that you feel hurt by some of the comments people have made. That’s a valid way to feel (even if I think that you have taken some of the comments too personally), but I think you probably got some posters’ backs up by insisting they would find something at Disney to enjoy. People know what they like.

And yes, like I said, lots of people hate camping, and some already know they hate camping, even if they’ve never been 😂 I’m grateful that my holiday choices and hobbies are so cheap tbh!

Justonemorecoffeeplease · 27/10/2026 20:44

For those that give a toss… I’m a bit of a social camper for one weekend a year and it’s the company not a tent that I enjoy. Other than that a holiday cottage in the UK or abroad and if I can take my dog and children fabulous. Loved a bit of mountain walking until I broke my leg on one and loathe hotels - I’m a teacher (a job I love) but being in close proximity with lots of families is certainly not my ‘happy place’. By the end of term my husband’s chewing is enough to set me off let alone a queue in a theme park.
Vive la difference!

PS @Waitingfordoggo you made me chuckle and smile.

No I want to tell the people who are rude and insulting that they would find something that they would enjoy. It doesn’t mean I would recommend every person going I just know that people who say they wouldn’t enjoy it are wrong.

maisybobbins · 27/10/2026 20:51

Go go go! I was totally anti Disney world nonsense but loved the films. Went to DW, caught the magic, had totally cheesy excellent time. I think it’s a great place for a family 50th!

I don’t think I can keep going with this same argument indefinitely, but no, you don’t ‘just know that people who say they wouldn’t enjoy it are wrong’.

You cannot possibly presume to tell strangers on the internet that they are wrong about what they know they enjoy and don’t enjoy.

I wouldn’t dream of saying to strangers that they are wrong to say they wouldn’t enjoy camping. I take their word for it because they are strangers. They know what they like. I don’t.

I can’t understand why you can’t see how weird it is to insist that someone you’ve never met is incorrect when they say that they wouldn’t enjoy Disney.

Like I said, maybe it’s this aspect of your posts that is irritating people. It’s certainly irritating me. It’s rude.

Mate, I don’t like supporting vast capitalist cooperations. I don’t like crowds. I don’t like seeing people spending lots of money on plastic tat destined for landfill. I’m not keen on other people’s children. I would hate Disney.

Yes perhaps not this, maybe my actual birthday we could do some sightseeing and eat delicious food, then head there the next day

The way things are in Paris, it's probably the last place to go. It's not the beautiful romantic city it used to be. Crime is through the roof and it is slowly being destroyed by riots.

Headdoesntfeelclear · Yesterday 14:26

Motherofacertainage · 27/10/2026 08:15

If you don’t actually stay in one of the Disney hotels you can probably save enough to have your birthday day out in central Paris. When my kids were that age we went for the day to Disney, stayed outside Paris (albeit camping but it was great!), ignored the Disney adults who say you have to do 2 or even 3 days in the parks and just treated it like a slightly spenny day trip to a theme park, kids had a great day out but equally loved central Paris, going up the Eiffel Tower and seeing the sights. Oh and it was my husbands birthday while we were there. Imho it’s a wasted opportunity going to that area and not having time in the most beautiful city in Europe!

Yes this was my plan!
