My house feels horrible when it rains

I love my house in the summer, its light and airy and just feels good. A lot of washy pale green and lots of natural wood - floors, some furniture etc. Light sofas and some richer dark pinks for cushions etx.

When it rains, it feels gross and drab.
Does your house feel nice when it rains and how do you make it so?

Light a candle, make a cup of tea and play some soft jazz. Bingo.

I use a ton of bright colour. Yes, it's a bit out there but stops the house looking drab in bad weather (which is a good 80% of the time in the UK). Loads of low lighting as well. I currently have three desk lamps on in the living room (no top light). A ton of drapery in heavy fabric. Some lovely throws, a lot of punchy artwork on walls, houseplants everywhere and a napping cat.

Do you still want it light and airy?

I love cosy from autumn til Easter so warm white bulbs (2000k or lower) in lamps is nice. You can get smart bulbs that have a white spectrum so it can be bright and study-lamp like, or lowered to be more cosy. I have those in my main living areas.
Cosy textures like blankets scattered around, warm wood picture frames are nice all year round. I used to have a lot of white but it looked stark in winter. Oak works well all year to make it look softer.

We get all cosy. Candles heated blankets reading or watching a film. Log burner on.

The lack of sun can make most homes feel gloomy so I think it's about changing the lighting and ramping up the cosy setting.

Yep, same here. My house is absolutely not to everybody’s tastes because it’s so bright but it never looks depressing. In the winter we just light loads of candles, have warm low lighting, and have a tonne of plants which helps.

We have various fairy lights in the living room to make it cosy

MargotLeadbetterOBE · 26/10/2026 10:27

Fairy lights. Kept our soft white lounge ones up over the TV / bookshelves unit several years ago and they are now permanent. Don’t have to be multicoloured as that may feel a bit too festive.

Hankunamatata · 26/10/2026 10:28

Change your lighting

Bonden · 26/10/2026 10:56

Rugs everywhere in winter. It’s what Europeans do afaik. Take them up when spring arrives.
winter curtains and summer curtains.

MindBodySoul · 26/10/2026 10:56

My house is like this but the other way around!

On dark rainy days it's so cozy and snug

But in the summer it all looks a bit run down and in dire need of a dust!

I love my house in winter and autumn, it's really warm and cosy.

I don't have one ceiling light on in the sitting room, I few lamps to create low level lighting, we also have fairy lights and scented candles.

Lipstone · 26/10/2026 11:54

I dont really have lights on during the day, but i will try more of lamps
