Air B n B guests no longer need to clean up after themselves

Wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the upcoming changes to Air BnB bookings where owners will no longer be able to ask guests to strip beds, remove rubbish or even wash up after themselves.
I'm a cleaner and I'm worried this will mean I can no longer do changeovers properly.
I currently do a 5 bed 3 bathroom that sleeps 10 and it takes me the whole check out time (5 hours) to turn the property over. That's with guests having to strip beds, remove rubbish to correct outside bins and at the very least load up the dishwasher and put it on.
If I have to add this on to It could easily add on an hour which means check out or in times would have to be adjusted and people already moan or turn up 2 or 3 hours early or leave an hour late.
So I'm guessing I'm asking what peoples thoughts are if you use air B and b. Do you do these things if asked and would continue too if you can't be asked to? Or do you think this isn't your place to do it? Does it make a difference if there is a cleaning fee charged separately?
My view is it's not a hotel ..its self catering and you should leave it as you found it. I always put a lot of effort into trying to ensure when the guests arrive it feels like no one was there before then and it's theirs for the week.
If I stay anywhere...even a hotel I'll strip the bed and set the bins ready to make it easier for the cleaner.
But although most guests are great you do get some that you just wonder what Thier own home is like.

Gosh you must pay your cleaner a lot if it’s going to cost £50 x number of nights to clean some dishes that about 80% of people won’t leave anyway.

It's just an excuse to charge more money. I stopped staying in air BnB run by amateurs who are often greedy with charges, but object to actually providing a decent service.

I've added £50 a night to my Airbnb prices to cover the extra cleaning that will be required. Not bothered about the bed stripping but my cleaner is not there to skivvy for entitled guests who can't be bothered to wash their own dirty dishes.

I've also stopped accepting dogs on Airbnb.

If you are happy to do your own washing up and pooper scoop the garden then you'll save a lot of money by booking on bookingdotcom.

Lots of people use AirBnBs because they need to stay in a house, a hotel just doesn't cut it with young kids or a group of friends etc. I don't mind the extra cost. I'm on holiday. If I can't afford it, I don't go. But when I do go, the last thing I want to do is take bins out and clean at 8am in the morning with an excited toddler around while also packing. It totally ruins that last morning. I hate it and in the last few years I've had no choice about it. Every single AirBnB host had increasingly annoying demands.

Apart hotels are usually run way more professionally

This attitude to customer service is exactly why I don’t stay in Air BnBs. It’s amateur, hosts think they are doing you a favour by letting you into their accommodation, you should be grateful and barely breath!

these aren’t house guests they are paying customers.

I usually stick to hotels, but did recently stay in self catering at centre parks. There is no way I would have had time (or the inclination) to strip beds. I did load the dishwasher though.

SeraphionLightbringer · 28/10/2026 10:08

Hosts have had it too good for too long. A large cleaning fee with the guests doing most of the work?!! People have been onto that racket for years and it’s disgraceful. It’s the reason I avoid AirBnB like the plague because I’d rather pay the same/less and not have to make my own bed and take out the bin. I can have the ‘Cleaning Experience’ at home, without needing to pay for it on holiday.

I agree. Demands need to be reasonable. I'm not leaving my young kids unattended or dragging them out in their pyjamas down a dark country lane to locate the outside rubbish store, when the owner/cleaner presumably know where it is and aren't trying to get a family fed and dressed while cleaning the place. I will happily set the dishwasher running and run the hoover round if it's convenient and to hand. Also, there is a special spot in hell for those hosts who expect guests to clean but don't leave a decent supply of dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid and dishcloths.

BeLemonMoose · 28/10/2026 12:27

Also if you have to leave at 10am it can be a rush anyway to pack up without having to clean as well.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/10/2026 12:48

The maximum cleaning fee allowed by Airbnb only covers half the cost as I pay my cleaners a decent hourly rate

But if some stays a week that extra £50 a night is £350, @TheWytch, and even if the place takes 5 hours to clean surely you're not paying £70 an hour?

Obviously it works out differently if you get a lot of 1 or 2 night stays, but that still sounds a hell of a lot

I stopped using air bnb because of this nonsense, if I’m paying to stay somewhere and there’s a cleaning fee, I’m buggered if I’m going to leave the place spotless. Getting it clean before the next person arrives very much falls into the area of someone else’s problem. Include the cost of cleaning in the price and if that prices you out of the market, you don’t have a viable business.

I agree with this. I just don’t use air bnb as I don’t want this on my holiday.

I don’t leave it a state or anything - washing up done and draining, dishwasher will be on, bins taken out, everything in it’s original place etc - but I’m not going to clean it in any real sense.

I will use proper cottage rental places or resorts but not air BnB or the equivalent. I don’t want hassle from some owner who thinks the floors should have been mopped or something even though I’m paying a cleaning fee.

OP, this is on the owners to pay for more than one cleaner if it can’t be done, not for you to somehow work miracles. They charge a cleaning fee for this so it’s only right it should be applied to cleaning!

Edit - mean to say, if this brings back some semblance of reasonableness, I might start using them again!

Rockyroadminibites · 28/10/2026 13:39

The ‘cleaning fee’ for Airbnb is really just to
offset the cost of cleaning for short stays. The cost of cleaning also comes out of the rental fee.

I know, and the fee structure isn't broken down for the guest, so they have no idea how the total figure is arrived at. So we have 22 pages of outrage against something that doesn't exist! It makes you wonder what else in their posts doesn't exist too..

I stopped booking with air BnB because of the amount of cleaning required and often very early check outs.

None of it worked for us as a family.

The onus on the paying customer seemed much larger in every respect and the truth is very seldom are the properties really hotel standard.

I'd much rather have hotel quality bedding and mattresses, a rainfall shower, and be able to leave without emptying the bins.

Yes they don't seem to understand that they are in the hospitality business. It's so weird.

I don't think they understand the concept of a business, i.e. the risks/costs as well as the rewards.

I am an Airbnb host for 12 years. I have never charged a cleaning fee or asked guests to do any chores before leaving. I scrub it all anyway so often their attempt to tidy hinders my routine.

I have my settings to leave a night between bookings in case of extra cleaning (like food or drinks spilled on beds or sofas - rare thankfully but it means changeovers are not panicked) and I have consistent 5 star ratings, my properties are spotless.
Cleaning fees, chore lists or "not enough time to clean" is greed. We are competing against hotels so need to approach hosting with that in mind.

You sound like a great host.

trapdooragain · Yesterday 19:46

I always strip the beds so they cant recycle them for the next guest...

Who says they are meant to be hotel standard? It’s self catering - much like hotels vs hostels vs high end hotels you get what you pay for. If in doubt, read the reviews.
