Air B n B guests no longer need to clean up after themselves

Wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the upcoming changes to Air BnB bookings where owners will no longer be able to ask guests to strip beds, remove rubbish or even wash up after themselves.
I'm a cleaner and I'm worried this will mean I can no longer do changeovers properly.
I currently do a 5 bed 3 bathroom that sleeps 10 and it takes me the whole check out time (5 hours) to turn the property over. That's with guests having to strip beds, remove rubbish to correct outside bins and at the very least load up the dishwasher and put it on.
If I have to add this on to It could easily add on an hour which means check out or in times would have to be adjusted and people already moan or turn up 2 or 3 hours early or leave an hour late.
So I'm guessing I'm asking what peoples thoughts are if you use air B and b. Do you do these things if asked and would continue too if you can't be asked to? Or do you think this isn't your place to do it? Does it make a difference if there is a cleaning fee charged separately?
My view is it's not a hotel ..its self catering and you should leave it as you found it. I always put a lot of effort into trying to ensure when the guests arrive it feels like no one was there before then and it's theirs for the week.
If I stay anywhere...even a hotel I'll strip the bed and set the bins ready to make it easier for the cleaner.
But although most guests are great you do get some that you just wonder what Thier own home is like.

I've always hated this aspect of air b.sbd b. It's supposed to be a holiday not a cleaning away from home.
At the very least I don't mind taking bed sheets off and taking bins out anything more is not good.

Are you ok? You sound quite mad. I’m not sure which part you are struggling with here - I told the owner and offered to pay for any additional cleaning fees. His response was basically “ahh don’t worry about it”. I could have said nothing and left it for his cleaners to find but i tried to do the right thing.

The air b&b allows dogs and specified no rules about furniture although we do generally try to discourage it purely out of courtesy. However my little terrier must have got on there when we weren’t looking and made a dirty protest. Accidents happen.

Calling people pigs and mingers isn’t a good look for you btw, very childish.

Exactly, don’t worry everyone else can see the issue is the owners relaxed attitude about the next guests coming to stay in a dog piss sofa!

If he chose to turn down an offer to pay additional cleaning fees that’s on him, but it shouldn’t be to the detriment of his next guests.

He needs to cover the cost himself and replace what needs to be replaced or steam cleaned or whatever. But with a same day check in that’s likely not going to happen and a quick wipe and spray is all that will have been done!

It’s all about greed, too many businesses don’t want to say no to dogs because all they are thinking about is the profits. But when those profits come in they don’t want to use any of it to adequately take care of the additional cleaning and maintenance allowing dogs brings.

There was a shopping mall in Glasgow that ran a dog friendly trial. At the end of it they reverted back to no (pet) dogs allowed because the reality was owners weren’t cleaning up after their dogs enough or at all in some cases and their cleaning team was already spread thin.

I have to respect it because it likely brought more footfall but instead of just thinking about profits they acknowledged it wasn’t working as other customers were disgusted by things like seeing dog mess near the food court.

I’m more than happy to put the dishwasher on and leave towels in the bathroom. I will leave rubbish in the correct bins.

i object to taking bins out and stripping beds and am cross when these expectations are only given on arrival. If it’s explained before booking, I will look elsewhere.

Since Covid, check in times have got later and later and check out times earlier. It seems to me that this is an owner issue, but paying guests suffer. If 5 hours isn’t enough, then a second person is needed.

You object to clearing up your own shit.. ffs get over yourself!

Absolutely not! My ‘own shit’ as you so delightfully put it is left in appropriate places such as the bin. I expect the hefty cleaning fees that are added to each booking to cover just that - clean the property ready for the next guest. I do not expect the previous guest to prepare the property for me, just as I don’t expect to prepare it for the next ones.

kirinm · 27/10/2026 09:07

Yeah I’m on the side of not being forced to clean when I already pay for someone to clean. We weren’t allowed in until 3pm but we’ve got to leave by 10am. It’s far too expensive most of the time and has got noticeably so over the last couple of years.

Swanfeet · 27/10/2026 09:23

lonelylou09 · 26/10/2026 19:03

I am the cleaner..did you not read my post? I've cleaned this property for 3 or 4 years now and there's only me to do it. Sometimes the owner is about ..sometimes shes not. I also do her house which is next door.
It's not about extra pay but obviously cleans after some guest who take full advantage of these new no rules rules will take a lot longer. I don't think there's anything worse as a cleaner than to still be there working when the next guests arrive as the previous ones trashed the place.

ok then!

I’m sure the stripping the bed thing was brought in during Covid? And the earlier checkout time (9am sometimes! Ridiculous!). I really object to stripping the beds - I don’t consider that a guest’s job. It does annoy me too when they want all washing up dry and away… I’m happy to load and start the dishwasher but I’m not getting up at 6:30 to start it off, just so it’s finished before I leave.
A lot of these demands don’t make it feel like a holiday so I’ll be glad when they’re no longer my problem!

Yes, Covid brought in the early check-out and late check-in, along with the ridiculous do the cleaner’s/owner’s job for them and strip the beds thing. As with all things that go downhill, they rarely go back up.

Everanewbie · 27/10/2026 09:37

Swanfeet · 27/10/2026 09:23

ok then!

@Swanfeet I think OP is targeting the wrong thing. If, as a cleaner, the owners are not allowing enough time to clean a large property then she needs to take it up with the owners. She needs to make the owners aware that new rules make it impossible to prepare the house in the allotted time to the required standard, and suggest that they make further provision.

OP is venting at customers and Air B&B when all that is nothing really to do with her, her "contract" is with the owner. It is the owners job to allocate resources in accordance with their obligations to AB&B, and the clients, and their own standards.

rookiemere · 27/10/2026 10:40

I think all owner can do is change the check in time and pay cleaner for an extra hour on the basis it may be needed. At the minute turnover is 5 hrs which suggests a 10am departure and a 3pm entry. Most places we stay at let you in at 4 so that doesn’t seem too bad to me - and of course if there aren’t loads of dishes to do then the guests could be let in early. Of course will cost owner an extra hours cleaning which may be reflected in increased rental costs.

Can I ask if every time your 2 cleaners take 2 hours to clean your 5 bed they also have to deal with everything else I have to do? Including making up 8 beds, restocking all your sundry items, removing the rubbish from outside, deep cleaning all bathrooms and kitchen and including oven and fridge clean plus a general tidy? I doubt it. I do general cleaning and do the owners 7 bed 4 bath house in 4 hours but that does not include making beds and deep cleaning plus a property inspection.
Yes I could probably do the let quicker and have done on occasion but I take price in my work so if there is extra time I'll do other things I don't normally get around to.

> I take price in my work

I assume you mean pride

That's what I said, you must be extremely diligent

My cleaners make up only two beds, obviously no restocking required, they empty the bins into the appropriate wheelie outside, oven clean is an occasional item, I keep my fridge clean (as I would do in an airbnb)

If it takes longer than planned, charge more and get help

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 27/10/2026 11:00

nicegreenwillow · 26/10/2026 22:28

So, @lonelylou09- you strip the bed, even if you stay in a hotel? Why?

It's emptying the bins in a hotel that made me go wtf. Not once in my life have I seen a guest check out of a hotel with a rubbish bag.

BeLemonMoose · 27/10/2026 22:49

I stopped booking with air BnB because of the amount of cleaning required and often very early check outs.

I've added £50 a night to my Airbnb prices to cover the extra cleaning that will be required. Not bothered about the bed stripping but my cleaner is not there to skivvy for entitled guests who can't be bothered to wash their own dirty dishes.

I've also stopped accepting dogs on Airbnb.

If you are happy to do your own washing up and pooper scoop the garden then you'll save a lot of money by booking on bookingdotcom.

I’m not paying a cleaning fee and cleaning for you. I’ll wash up and wipe over but fucked if I’m stripping beds, sorting bins hoovering and mopping. Sheer greed by owners. You’re handsomely reimbursed and if you add a cleaning fee do the bloody vleaning

I don't charge a cleaning fee. The nightly rate covers the cleaning as an inclusive charge. Overall of course you actually pay more. A separate cleaning fee is actually cheaper for the guests but does tend to attract the attitude you are displaying.

The maximum cleaning fee allowed by Airbnb only covers half the cost as I pay my cleaners a decent hourly rate.

So actually you are happy to let the cleaner skivvy for them, and make a profit on their extra work to boot. Nice.

If it's really about not wanting to ask this of the cleaner then you'd vote with your feet properly and just come off AirBnB altogether.

Cleaner!! A cleaver is very different 😝

I’ve always thought it wrong that you pay a cleaning fee but have to do quite a bit of cleaning. So what’s the fee for? I think it’s right, the new law.

Why didn’t you add £50 previously if you thought guests would pay it? Surely you’d been renting at market rates?

Gosh you must pay your cleaner a lot if it’s going to cost £50 x number of nights to clean some dishes that about 80% of people won’t leave anyway.

They could just pay 2 cleaners? To do the work in half the time.
