I have just started a new job and my colleagues are both pleasant enough middle aged women. I only work with one of them on any day. They talk about themselves incessantly. I know all about their families, work history, central heating problems, car buying, bathroom tiling, health issues, holidays and pets. They have neither of them asked me anything about myself. If I venture any personal information one of them starts to stare into the middle distance, and the other one just talks over me. I am a good listener and I ask questions, is that the problem? They don't seem to have any self awareness that all the talk comes from their side. Is it just coincidence that they are both like this or am I unlucky?

Workplace culture develops over time and you can get similarities amongst colleagues as people feel comfortable or not with how a workplace is.

What would they do if working with each other - perhaps both talk over each other??

Is it acceptable in your workplace to use headphones so you don’t have to listen to their crap daily?

The phrase “I remember you telling me that “ will probably minimise their jibber jabber fairly quickly. It’s so much more polite than “you’re boring me now “😀

Are they telling you these things or are they talking to each other and you’re there because of proximity due to your job role. They might actually not see you as part of the conversation and you’re trying to insert yourself cold into their conversation

It does seem like they are talking to each other rather than talking with you. TBH, I wouldn’t bother trying to get into their 2 people clique, you don’t even enjoy the topics. Get the earphones, do your job and don’t give them any headspace.

I work with a group of women who have been working together for years, there is no space for me in that conversation, they don’t even register I have entered the room so I make up for it by having a very nice relationship with the rest of the staff who are working behind our door.

The OP says she only works with one of them on any day, so the two of them can’t be talking to each other.
