'I could've bought Primark leggings but I bought Zara as its quality over quantity'
'I saw one lady buy 2 books but they were only 69p each and that isn't enough!'

Anybody else seeing daily posts like this on social media? It's fantastic people are buying things which will make somebody's Christmas better but ffs, it's not a competition 😬

No I am not seeing daily posts like this on social media.

Did you put this into a random word generator? What does any of that have to do with Dunelm? What's a joy tag? What does any of it have to do with Christmas?

Needmorelego · 25/10/2026 20:12

Don't read any "Operation Christmas Child" posts then because you will want to scream.
That seems to be about who can get the cheapest and best bargains ever so they can give more - but a lot is just crap. It really is.
The Dunelm thing though is lovely and I think anyone who donates to it is a really nice person.
(Operation Christmas Child is iffy though)

It's a Christmas scheme in Dunelm stores where they have a tree in-store with tags on for people to donate a Christmas gift for someone in need.
You pick a tag. Buy whatever is suggested and return to Dunelm who distribute it via local charities.

Thanks. That's making some sense now!

I keep seeing these posts on social media too OP, and both the 'look at this mountain of (cheap crap) presents I've bought' and the 'look at me I've spent a fortune on super posh gifts' types are really irritating. Just do it quietly because you care, don't show off on social media.

Exactly this!!
The comments regarding the lady who bought the 69p books we brutal. That might have been all she could afford and that's fine in my opinion.

The posts online are weirdly fascinating.
There's a lot of ones where people seem to act confused about what to buy from a (what seems to me) a fairly obvious request.
For example "Girl age 12. Would like cosy items for bedroom" and the person acts all innocent saying "what on earth shall I get?" waiting for ideas ("how about a fleecy blanket" 🙄) so then they can show off the amazing selection of items they buy.
It is very performative.

I saw one about 69p books and it wasn't so much about only spending 69p but that they were toddler books bought for a 6 year old.

I think the issue was she picked up 4 tags. People were saying that if she didn’t have much to spend, just pick one tag and buy decent gifts for one person. A little girl asked for books and she bought 2 cheap, short books and a colouring book or something. She could have bought decent books and not done another 3 tags. Hopefully the organisers share the gifts out so it’s fair.

That awful mother from the Ingham family filmed herself buying things and saying she didn’t know what to buy. She kept saying she didn’t want praise and it wasn’t for attention while filming the whole process. Then don’t film it you stupid twatty woman. It was clearly all for attention. The way she spoke about the people receiving the gifts was very patronising too.

These 69p books are causing so much drama 🙈 no, this was because they were JUST 69p and that the tags should have more spent on them.

I also like the arguing about whether the gifts get split so they're equal or not.

They do though because Tia Maria said that her Grandma's next door neighbour's aunty's sister in law works there sooooo....
