Mine is fresh bedding!

I work in a hospital so will be expected to work through any sort of disastrous event. I would want to keep my normal life going as long as possible so I have two duvet/sheet sets washed and dried this weekend and stored away, with dryer sheets to keep them smelling fresh.

For this reason I’ve also got a load of dry shampoo in!

A big bag of dry dog food, and maybe some bottled water. That is all.
My fridge, freezer and cupboards have more than enough non cook food options to sustain us for more than 3 days, even if it amounted to some very unconventional meals by the end. Kibble can be stored for 18 months and is balanced and perfectly safe for human consumption, and the dog can have it when it is nearing its use-by-date, which is what will almost certainaly end up happening.
If I end up eating the kibble then I will be having to make some much much bigger decisions that make worrying about eating dog food entirely insignificant!

It’s actually a really reasonable idea as one thing that people forget in these circs is that if your house is one of the fortunate ones that doesn’t lose power people may descend on you in an emergency for accommodation/ showers etc! When we experienced a freak weather event this is exactly what happened , nearly everyone I know who wasn’t in the affected zone became a host to families who were. There were random neighbours on sofas, families camped in people’s lounges etc. You’d think people all decamp to leisure centres / hotels etc but if these are affected too chaos ensues pretty quickly !

WitchesCatWhisker · 25/10/2026 21:52

Im going to stash a load of chocolate which I think will be cheering in the event of power outage. And scented candles! Lots of wine. Board games.

Sannabay · 25/10/2026 21:54

Ok Op you want to know what I have .

Bedding is not slightly strange but I have an emergency tooth fill set.

Quite strange but useful me thinks.

unsync · 25/10/2026 22:22

I was abroad when all these prepper threads started - what is everyone thinking is going to happen? On a scale of Winter of Discontent to 1980s nuclear armageddon - whereabouts are we planning for? (I'm good on the bedding front so feeling chipper on that score).

Sparkling bottled water just ordered on amazon, we have non sparkling anyway, but wanted a change, nothing far out or weird really. A few extra tins of potatoes, veg, beans etc......

Bobbie12345678 · 26/10/2026 04:19

I have thrown in Werther’s Originals ( to balance out all the tinned beans and give us a bit of a smile), a large pack of paracetamol (because if the world goes to shit I do not want to have to manage it with a headache) and some caffeine tablets (see previous point about not wanting a headache).
I should possibly have more bottled water in but those three things seemed to cover the essentials.

About 6 months ago we had a 24 hour power cut. No electricity meant no cooking, no internet and no phone, no lights, no hot water.Live rural and no mobile phone signal. Landline is internet phone. Wasn't particularly bothered except it was so BORING. So I'm thinking of maybe buying a very large jigsaw puzzle or two and a big bottle of gin for when it's too dark to do my jigsaw.

I’d recommend getting a power bank for certain things. Slightly different but in a hurricane we would have advanced notice, so had time to charge things / fill water / get prepared. I mean gin would certainly help 😂

Sparkling water. This did make me laugh. (Personally I hate the stuff but needs must in a crisis)

HikingHippo · 26/10/2026 05:09

Precisely nothing. The cupboards are always well stocked, we may end up eating some weird combos for a bit, but never mind.

We're campers, so always have things like bottled water, torches, power banks plus butane stove etc. Plenty of blankets, fleece onesie for the kids, you get the idea.

And we live rurally where its not unusual to get power cuts, particularly in storms where trees come down on power lines etc. and the local supermarket can't open.

I also rotate my bedding so always a fresh set in the airing cupboard 😉

SuitcaseAndSecrets · 25/10/2026 20:30

Duvet/ sheets? Don't you have many sets? I live alone and have 10 sets of duvet covers and sheets in my airing cupboard.. .. I'm not doing anything.. it will be what it will be.. l always keep my kindle and phone charged.. that's it.

Blimey. I’ve got six for my own bed and three for the guest room bed and I thought that was a lot!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 26/10/2026 05:22

I had a power cut for ten hours last winter and the main issue was it was so cold I went to bed to keep warm and once it got dark the only thing to do was sleep.

HelpMeGetThrough · 26/10/2026 05:33

I’m going to buy a utility adapter for my EV. I can then plug the TV and skybox in and watch. Got to sort out the essentials.

Car is generally charged up well, so I could get a few hours.

You can get decent rechargeable head torches for about a tenner. We use them for all sorts, including rummaging around for stuff at the back of the cupboard under the stairs!

PersephoneParlormaid · 26/10/2026 05:37

I don’t have a spare set of bedding, I wash mine and replace same day.

Aliencrispsandolives · 26/10/2026 05:41

Last time we lost power for a few days the dc and I dressed up in our nicest clothes to picnic on the floor so I will be dusting off my tiara and picnic blanket.

We also get out the musical instruments that none of us can play. Luckily we have no neighbours as we probably look quite bizarre dressed up with tambourines and kazoos.

Mrcollinswave · 26/10/2026 06:04

hopeyourethereinthemornin · 25/10/2026 19:52

I usually just wash and put the same one back on

Me too OP, I haven't got the storage space for extras!

mellongoose · 26/10/2026 06:07

I think there are two types of preppers. Ones who have a bit extra and a torch in to cover day long power outages. Then there are those who are prepping for Armageddon!

Im not sure which category I fall under 😆 I’m currently squirrelling goodies away for Christmas but they will come out if a 3 day power outage happens first!

Sannabay · 26/10/2026 06:12

Knickers!! Op is right to think laundry.

If there's a week long elec outage. I want fresh kecks. I'm defo going to buy a new pack and leave it unopened!

Thanks OP. X

Our water goes out for days at a time (thanks south East water!) and what I've learnt is that after 6 days without a hot shower I would welcome death and go gladly.

hopeyourethereinthemornin · 25/10/2026 20:05

Exactly!

I also think we should be expecting a global supply chain breakdown, so I’ve got all my Christmas shopping sorted. We have young kids in the family and u want to make things feel normal for them.

Isn’t all the christmas stock in the shops now?

Christ above I forgot that people on here are unable to do anything even slightly lighthearted

this is more light headed than hearted ?!?🤔

Give the woman a break and stop banging on about duvets. I hate it in here when people latch onto an innocent comment and are like a dog with a bone, just answer the question FGS.

As for me OP, I’m not planning on stockpiling. I looked into it and realised that I’ve already got a some tins so hopefully that would keep us going for a while 🤷‍♀️

I get what you are saying but the OP is being weird

She is saying this weekend she has made sure she has a clean spare set, but she always has a clean spare set - I think everyone is just a bit confused!
