To think an airline should give clear information about delayed flight?

queenceleste · 24/10/2026 23:02

We are expecting family on a flight from Edinburgh which was due to arrive at Stansted at 7.40 and there is still no information anywhere online about departure.
It’s Ryanair who I guess hate the customer. But can’t they out something up? They put 1 am at one point but nothing online.
why is the customer service so completely garbage?
Why not let us know? Are there no staff any more?

Can you not check the airport arrivals times?

Stopandlook · 24/10/2026 23:06

Not just Ryan Air. I’ve had really bad service from BA twice this year. No staff around to help - the only ones visible are too junior to make any sort of decision. Modern life 🙄

BePeachNewt · 24/10/2026 23:07

Has the inbound aircraft arrived at Edinburgh?

Catza · 24/10/2026 23:08

The simple answer would be that they don't know. They don't know when the traffic control will approve the departure, when they may get a more favourable weather window and how many other airlines are waiting for their turn to depart. So there may genuinely not be any useful information at all on their end either. After all, it's up to traffic control not Ryanair.
I sympathise. I was once delayed for 9 hours overnight and was not allowed to leave the airport which didn't even have anywhere for us to comfortably sit, let alone lie down. We eventually took off at 4 am and it was the easiest 6-hour-long flight ever as I was so exhausted, uncomfortable and sleep-deprived that I fell asleep as soon as I sat in my seat and woke up when we landed.

RafaistheKingofClay · 24/10/2026 23:11

I’d imagine they have no idea how long it’s going to be delayed. That’s not unusual. They can’t really control the weather.

Examtime · 24/10/2026 23:15

Have you checked flightradar24?

CheeseNPickle3 · 24/10/2026 23:28

If I'm reading it right, Flightradar doesn't know either because the estimated take off time is still 6.15, assuming it's flight RK1274. The aircraft marked down to do the flight is G-RUKJ, which flew from Glasgow to London Stansted and has only just landed so it must be another plane going from Edinburgh.

Edinburgh departures for the flight is marked as Go To Gate.

PollyBell · 24/10/2026 23:33

Why do you assume they know and are deliberately not saying

MagneticSquirrel · 24/10/2026 23:37

That’s not a Ryanair problem or airline problem/fault though, they can only go when the airport/air traffic, condition of airplane (I’ve been delayed by aircraft needing repairs before) and/or crew availability allow. They can’t tell you because they don’t know either, even if they had 1staff to 1 passenger ratio they can’t say when they don’t know.

If you check Edinburgh departures then you can see if the flight has taken off for London, and others have made helpful flight radar suggestions..

CheeseNPickle3 · 24/10/2026 23:39

G-RUKE, one of the other planes that does that route was supposed to do Malta to Edinburgh earlier but was diverted to Manchester.

G-RUKN, is in Albania and headed to Edinburgh but delayed

There's one Ryanair plane at Edinburgh at the moment EI-EVL but it's due to go to Dublin.

queenceleste · 24/10/2026 23:40

Yes I’ve done all of the above.
It’s the lack of care for travellers, there maybe some travelers who need support. There’s just nothing but an 3.50 (!) food voucher and no staff.
I found on X that Ryanair planes have not been able to land because of high winds. That’s out of anyone’s contro; but there is just no care for the people who have been stranded there since 4 pm.
just employ some staff to be present.

I hear you OP. I've had a similar experience recently and the problem wasn't the cancellation, it was the lack of information, no-one knew where to go or what to do and I do suspect sometimes the cheaper airlines allow this to happen as otherwise they would have to admit defeat and put you all up in a hotel. So much better if you have already done this when they declare the flight to have been cancelled, the obligation is then taken by you and not theirs.

The one I was on we had to call a hotline and the hotline kept dropping! No communication at all.

You do realise they don't just do it for fun, it happens with flying with the amount of planes flying at any one time not sure how what you think is possible

03cg73 · 24/10/2026 23:47

I’m in Scotland at my dad’s at the moment and the wind is horrendous. No exaggeration, I was struggling to walk earlier when we took the dogs out and my 16 year old dd was clamped to arm to stay upright

I assume the planes will also be having trouble. If you check Edinburgh airport departures website it should be able to tell you if it’s taken off or how long the delay is

This is what I mean.
something like
”we hope for news by 1 am”
but just silence. Just communicate - even if it’s just to say we have no news.

If it helps you any, The wind has gotten worse in the last hour or so and is not dying down any at the moment so it could be a while

Hayley1256 · 25/10/2026 00:01

It says expected at 1:58 on Stansteds website

CheeseNPickle3 · 25/10/2026 01:10

Looks like the plane is on the way to Edinburgh - due to arrive in 20 mins or so - and set off back to London at 2:18

suburberphobe · 25/10/2026 01:20

Crying Air are crap.

Sorry OP you are going through this.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 25/10/2026 01:58

It’s now scheduled for arrival at Stansted at 2.42.

queenceleste · 25/10/2026 15:16

It landed at 2.43.

I realize there were huge problems because of the storm. I was super relieved that they managed to get that flight out in the early hours as the weather was really bad.

I just feel like they could have one member of staff just to update us once an hour like
”We know this is a long, frustrating delay but the storm is creating huge issues and preventing flights across Europe from landing and taking off. As soon as we have any information we will publish it here (their website maybe?) also don’t forget your vouchers you can claim against food in some airports. Our staff are working hard to ensure your journey continues as soon as possible.”

Just basic comms, say that you don’t have news yet, but say that out of basic courtesy.

We used to have a basic rule when I was in the flying business that even if you have no info/nothing to update it's good idea to say exactly that, and give a rough time for the next update..even if that update is "still no change".

I'd be wary of the idea that all can be revealed by tracking individual airframes on the tracking sites, once you get mass disruption aircraft rotations can change massively.

Finally I know there's always a grumble about airlines not having enough staff to cope when there is mass disruption but you can't have countless staff tucked away to be rolled out on a bad day and have low fares.....

Star81 · 25/10/2026 15:35

Ryanair update you using the travel assistant on the app. I also got a couple of emails too but most of info on the app.

We had a bit of a delay on Thursday and firstly were told there would be a delay , then told it was due to last minute crew illness, then told we had refreshment vouchers attached to our boarding passes and then lastly they had done an aircraft change and the flight delay had reduced,

notimagain · 25/10/2026 15:58

@Star81

Ryanair update you using the travel assistant on the app.

That's increasingly the way the industry has gone...in event of disruption if you ask you will get told "check the app"...it's increasingly rare to see groundstaff writing updates on whiteboards..
