To hate this part of new job

I've been in a company for a few months, it has its good and bad.
The good is that it's supervisory experience which I wanted in order to progress in my career.
The bad is that there is a lot more driving than I was led to believe, sometimes 30-40 miles a day (not including commuting to and from home) and I am not given mileage pay for a lot of this.
It's difficult to do this role without a car, and I've started feeling anxious about the idea of my car breaking down and having to take a day off/losing money if I can't get the repair done the same day. I do try to look after the car but it's quite old, I couldn't afford much.

The supervisory experience involves 'spot checks' on staff for the exact same job I also do which can feel awkward. I basically have to find out where a staff member is working, turn up to 'surprise' them at the client's house and explain to the client why I'm there too.
They're doing the same job I also do, I just have this extra responsibility for about 20p more an hour. The issue is they don't always adhere to rota times, which is not their fault, so there is a lot of idle time waiting in the car for them to appear, then having to jump out the car when they do.

I think I've made a mistake with this job, I'd be better off sticking in one place. I'm using about £75 of my own petrol a month (excluding commuting to and from home) do these sound like issues?

I may be overthinking it but I'm starting to think I'd be better with a newer/lower mileage car for this sort of work, but that's easier said than done.
These staff checks are so awkward because then I'm also 'in the way' at the client's house and feel so daft watching them do the exact role I do.

Its ridiculous that you are not paid mileage.

Tortephant · Yesterday 21:44

It’s not the fuel cost, you also have wear and tear. Eg tiers, oil, mileage on your or care car.

They should be paying 40p a mile up to what ever the current HMRC cut off is.

We are paid mileage when we do the client visits ourselves, but not the staff checks, which are about 50% of the rota, sorry I probably didn't explain well. So we are paid some mileage but really not much.

I think we get 36p a mile sadly

Sounds like being a supervisor doesn't suit you,.

Maybe, or maybe just the wrong setting. It's more the driving/mileage issue

If you are expected to drive as part of your role, they should be paying you mileage. But it sounds like a care agency so I assume they are cowboys like the rest of them.
I would look for another job as your "payrise" doesn't cover your car depreciation and petrol.

Tollington · Yesterday 22:01

Does your car insurance cover you? Mine is Social and Commuting. If I had that for your job, I wouldn't be covered

GrumblingGeek · Yesterday 23:47

i’d be expecting to be reimbursed for mileage. if not i’d be off.
