To think this isn’t a ‘regression’?

Hi everyone, this isn’t really an AIBU but this is the best place for traffic, I’m sorry but I’m desperate here

I potty trained my DD 5 months ago, very successfully. After 3 days she was spot on and about two weeks later dry at night. For 4 months straight. I thought FINALLY one stage that wasn’t an absolute tooth and nail struggle you know?

We had a tongue tie, we had colic, we had separation anxiety, we have had breathing issues, we have struggled through the last three years and I was so happy that one time she actually took to something

Well not so fast.

Two weeks ago she had a few accidents, late to the potty and wet her trousers. Not like her… but okay. Then the next day 3 times, then the next day 5 times, then bedwetting started.

Two weeks in and she’s now going through 5-6 pairs of knickers and trousers a day, despite us all making a huge effort to take her to the toilet pretty much hourly.

We have been tested for a water infection which came back clear, the doctor is now asking for blood tests and urine samples to go to the lab.

Nursery wonder if it’s a regression or defiance but sometimes she doesn’t even know she’s done a wee while shes sat there in wet clothes.

Does this sound like a regression? She wasn’t ever this bad when we did training. She’s regressed to a place that’s even worse than when we first trained. I’m at my wits end.

Is this a thing? Does anyone have any ideas?!

I feel like I wrote this exact post about two years ago…. I don’t know what happened but after a few weeks it was back to normal. I remember being devastated and tearing my hair out at the time

That sounds really difficult but also that you’re doing all the right things. I don’t have any advice but I hope you get some answers from the GP.

Constipation can cause urinary incontinence. And regressions (big long ones - we had one with my daughter) happen because of life changes (new nursery/class, new sibling, house move etc)

how old is she and has she been constipated or has any big life changes?

MyPurpleHeart · 24/10/2026 20:56

She has been constipated, it’s been an issue for a year or so now, she doesn’t go for around 3 days and when she does go it can only be described as a loaf. She’s on cosmicol and we have been monitoring her water intake to try and keep it flowing. It’s getting better slowly, but the constipation has been going over a year and the incontinence has only started the last two weeks.

There have been no other changes. We put her in a bed rather than a cot bed a month ago but that’s all, she’s 3

We had a family member die last night and have to fly out for the wake and funeral on Tuesday and ive no idea how we are going to manage. I don’t want to resort to nappies as I know it can really put them back, but I don’t want her to spend 6 hours travelling damp. No amount of clean pants seems to be enough.

Worms?

StayCoolLikeAPenguin · 24/10/2026 21:12

Has she fairly recently started at the nursery/had a change of key worker or room? Was the family member declining rather than a sudden death (I am sorry to hear this)? Unsettling life events can often cause a regression in toilet training.

MyPurpleHeart · 24/10/2026 23:09

No she’s been at nursery for two years now and in the same room since the beginning of the year. The family member died suddenly in a different country and was fit and well 2 days ago.

Im absolutely perplexed as to what’s going on

I don’t think it’s worms as I haven’t seen any but will do a close inspection of her next poo
