Don't go for a shit when somebody is about to get in the bath

In the absence of having diarrhoea or a medical condition that affects the bowels, I think it's hugely inconsiderate to go and have a shit (in the only bathroom in the house) JUST before somebody goes in for a bath.

I'm the offended, not the offender.

Needing to poo for 30 minutes whilst someone has a leisurely bath is going to be uncomfortable and potentially cause constipation

I frequently manage to hold off having poo in order to work, travel, live my life etc …. And I am not constipated !!!

I knew I was good at something

I wonder if that person is the secret shop shitter if they can't wait 30 minutes 🤔

Does it happen a lot @FrequentFlyer2 or are you just annoyed tonight?

Aren't most people capable of holding back for 30 mins? I mean my pelvic floor is knackered but even I manage it.

No, and it's really unhealthy to hold in a bowel movement when you need to go.

But why should someone have to sit and hold in their urge to poo in their own home? When the person waiting for the bath can just give it a few minutes for any smell to to, top the bath up with hot water if needed and then crack on?

I blame the blue fluffy thing on the gas advert. It's normalised shitting whilst someone's in the bath.

😆

No ! I can’t , nor my husband and daughter. Also, my baths tend to last well over 30 minutes by the time I’ve topped it up with more hot water!
And it’s better than them needing to go while you’re still in the bath, surely!

AnneKipankitoo · 24/10/2026 21:13

I can’t understand people buying old houses with a water closet and a separate bathroom who knock down the wall and connect them.

Simonjt · 24/10/2026 21:30

Is it such a big deal, everyone has to poo, no one has poo that smells like perfume or freshly baked bread, it isn’t going to harm you to get a waft of poo while you’re in the bath and it won’t last long anyway.

Yes, we had that set up in our old house, it was great as you could have a bath without stopping access to the toilet. The only problem was that for some weird reason the wash hand basin was in the bathroom, not the toilet, so you either needed to go into the bathroom to wash your hands or downstairs to wash them in the kitchen sink. We kept wipes in the toilet but that's obviously not great for the environment.

It was a common set up in houses in that area built in the 60s and I knew of quite a few where a previous occupant had knocked through. Apart from having access to the WHB I didn't get the point.

scalt · 24/10/2026 21:34

Only on Mumsnet do people talk about shit so much.

Perhaps that’s why Mumsnetters so often refer to children as “little shits” - it’s the only synonym they know.

WhatsItAllForAnyway · 24/10/2026 21:43

Maybe they were hoping you wouldn't tie up the only bathroom for half an hour? Seriously though, if you have to go, you have to go. It goes with the territory if you have just one bathroom and the only toilet is in there. Awkward for anyone who has to use the bathroom while you're in there relaxing.

Cranx · 24/10/2026 21:44

B1anche · 24/10/2026 20:20

This is Mumsnet, where no-one seems capable of holding on for more than 2 minutes. They will all tell you you're unreasonable.

I’ve never known anyone only spend 2 minutes in the bath, surely that’s a bit of a waste of water.

Tryagain26 · 24/10/2026 22:25

You are being unreasonable. It's easier and healthier for you to wait to have your bath.
If he needs to go he needs to go.

Ishehe · 24/10/2026 22:27

Are you serious 😂😂😂 your bath can wait . The poo can’t. They’re not doing it on purpose! Sometimes I can wait and sometimes I can’t. We’re all like that! Nothing weird about it.

Mistachio · 24/10/2026 22:30

I agree. Unless there’s a medical need, anyone should be able to hold on for long enough for someone to have a bath. It’s not going to cause constipation once in a while for gods sake. What is you were stuck in traffic for an hour? Would you abandon the car and poo beside the road?? Course not.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 24/10/2026 22:36

It's healthy to go when you need to go. It's damaging to bowels to hold it in.

Maybe you're resentful of other half because of something else, and taking it out on his moments of evacuation.

Itsthewoluff · 24/10/2026 22:37

Just because some people can hold on, doesn’t mean that everyone can, even if they don’t have a medical condition. Surely it’s not beyond people’s comprehension to recognise this.

Specialneedsnightmare · 24/10/2026 22:38

Wouldn't you just ask everyone in household whether they need the toilet just before you run a bath?

I live alone but while staying with family this is what we always did.

I wouldn't like getting into a bath with the room still stinking with someone's shit, especially a partner's.

Flipperthepriest · 24/10/2026 22:43

Some of you are talking about baking it like it's a moral good.

angelikacpickles · 24/10/2026 22:47

I agree with you OP. Baffled by all these people who must poo immediately.

Catza · 24/10/2026 22:47

Apart from children who are deemed capable of holding it in indefinitely while on school premises.

I don't like it myself, OP. I resorted to making a big announcement about 45 minutes ahead of time and make sure everyone goes. After that, the door is locked and you are out of luck.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/10/2026 22:48

It’s inconvenient but it’s not inconsiderate people can’t help needing a 💩 when they need a 💩 and I’d imagine it’s not medically a good thing to hold it in while you soak in the bath for half an hour but I do take your point

There are plenty of things that won't harm you but can still be deeply unpleasant.

Propagandalf · 25/10/2026 00:17

@FrequentFlyer2 - get your hubby to buy himself 'poo pourii'. £10 off Amazon.

It's a spray that you use like an air freshener, into the toilet bowl afterwards. It cancels the smell out in seconds. I have used this myself, so it's not something I'm quoting off the net.

seahorsessky · 25/10/2026 01:06

Besidemyselfwithworry · 24/10/2026 20:16

What are you meant to do if you need to go?? This is why I love our older house the upstairs toilet and sink is separate to the family bathroom!!

Yes. A lot of people knock through though, obviously when they're next to each other, and I've never understood that, unless you've got more toilets elesewhere in the house.
Whether it's unreasonable depends how regular you are, OP. Sheldon on Big Bang had times for each flatmate, but most people don't seem to always go at a regular time, even if they don't have medical issues.
I'd prefer someone went inside than in the garden like a dog, especially if you've got neighbours who could see them!

Me neither.

It's kind of my dream to have them separate, I don't know why they ever started putting them together?

It's impractical and why would anyone think it is better to bathe and poo in the same place?
