To be really scared by this messaging from the government?

As someone who really struggled during the pandemic this has really scared me. I have done a big order of hygiene basics to arrive tomorrow (12 x packs of wet wipes etc) and will be heading out for a stock up shop tomorrow to fill up on tins etc.

I’m considering ordering 12 of those water refills for water coolers and a pump that fits in the top, but I don’t know if that’s overkill. I alone drink 4-5 litres of water a day, plus cooking water!

I am really scared. How is everyone else dealing with this?

They had better not cry ''wolf'' too many times - unless ''they'' know something we all do not!

They aren’t crying wolf. They explicitly list the hazards and emergencies this is aimed at (OP claims they haven’t but it’s right there on the webpage). Reminding people that power cuts and floods actually happen, and maybe they should take a little responsibility to be prepared, is a good thing.

Some people live in areas that could flood, you know if that is a risk where you are or not.

But if we get flooded what are they expecting us to do?! Pitch up a tent?

NHS says 2 litres minimum. If you’re thirsty you’re already dehydrated.

here's what they actually say
"Daily fluid intake
Most people should aim to drink enough during the day so their pee is a clear pale yellow colour.
In the Eatwell Guide, the government recommends that people should aim to drink 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day. This is just a guide and you may need to drink more fluids if you're:
pregnant or breastfeeding
in a hot environment
physically active for long periods
ill or recovering from illness
Water, lower-fat milk and lower-sugar drinks, including tea and coffee, all count as part of your daily intake."

The Eatwell Guide

Read about the Eatwell Guide, which shows how much of what we eat overall should come from each food group to achieve a healthy, balanced diet.

During Covid, some people found it hard to get food and medication. plans had to be put in place for them to be able to access those supplies.

Other people had decent stocks in their houses, and/or good abilities to source food - they were fine.

The fact that lots of people did have a resilient household meant that resources could be directed to the most needy. If your household is able and willing to make themselves generally resilient against emergencies, it’s a good thing to do and will, make life easier for everyone. How you do this and to what extent is up to you. You don’t have to do it at all.

didnttellasoul · 24/10/2026 13:58

If you struggled before, another lockdown, but under Labour would be infinitely worse. There’s no point prepping for that, just pour the wine, as PP said.

I really don’t know why someone being healthy and active is so upsetting to some people 😂

We have been given clear information that poor harvests, cyber attacks and fuel shortages are happening globally, and we know that the infrastructure and self sufficiency of the UK has been allowed to run down over a period of decades.

I have been thinking about the rock bottom basic things we need to live and how we might cope if there are outages and shortages.
These might include loss of power, including loss of water and sewerage pumping, food and fuel shortages, adverse weather and sabotage, cyber or otherwise.

Water
Food
Light
Ability to cook
Means of staying warm.
Means of transport and fuel
Reliable Information
Hygiene
Means of safely disposing of human waste.

If you do some research, perhaps on a couple of the UK prepper channel on YouTube, there is masses of information on the things you might need for the above, also without breaking the bank.

I have no idea! This is what’s confusing me. If it’s because of weather why do we need to prepare to leave?!

If your house is flooded you’ll likely be kipping at a sports hall with the rest of the town.

And if that happens, being able to grab a sleeping bag and basic provisions will make it a nicer experience for you!

oh come on! we know from the past that local churches, community halls and so on will open. When I had dogs, my plan was to go to higher ground and sleep in the car if necessary as not all evacuation spaces would accept animals.

Vanillaicelatte · 24/10/2026 14:00

PersephoneParlormaid · 24/10/2026 13:14

By drinking wine.

And eating chocolate 😂

I truly truly wonder how some people actually manage every day life

i mean 12 packets of wet wipes why not add some baby oil and you will be almost beating Puff Daddy and his legendary supplies 😂

LondonLass2026 · 24/10/2026 14:00

4 or 5 litres of water a day! Jeez, leave some for the rest of us would you!

Just have basics in the house, and try not to panic. I didn't even know about this warning! Then again I've been in hospital.

finally some common sense.

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/10/2026 14:01

OneSnugBear · 24/10/2026 13:16

By not panicking. What happens is out of your hands. If we get nuked, it won't matter how many tins of soup you have.

It's not about nukes it's about relatively short lived power cuts to due to storms or cyber attacks and that kind of thing. If it was a nuclear attack 3 day's supplies would be useless.

Have a contingency plan (who you would stay with), a plan for your possessions (what goes upstairs, what gets left downstairs, what comes downstairs from upstairs because you want rid and the insurance money for it!!) and a grab bag (plus cloud storage of scanned key documents), flood/ weather alerts via your phone so you don't get caught out unexpectedly.

Why do they want us to buy sleeping bags?? Is it because they think we'll have to leave our homes??

Thousands of people have to leave their homes every year due to flooding. They are told to bring clothes, medicine and bedding with them. A sleeping bag is a lot more convenient than bringing regular bedding if you are going to be sleeping on a camp bed in a draughty village hall.

Over the last 2 days, i actually strongly suspect that some people on MN are nejoying panicking others by creating these "i am scared" posts. Let's be honest, MN has high incidence of MH issues, so some seem to light a match and wach the spiraling...

Surely the government should be providing those sort of essentials!!
