To be really scared by this messaging from the government?

As someone who really struggled during the pandemic this has really scared me. I have done a big order of hygiene basics to arrive tomorrow (12 x packs of wet wipes etc) and will be heading out for a stock up shop tomorrow to fill up on tins etc.

I’m considering ordering 12 of those water refills for water coolers and a pump that fits in the top, but I don’t know if that’s overkill. I alone drink 4-5 litres of water a day, plus cooking water!

I am really scared. How is everyone else dealing with this?

Erm.....have you heard of 9/11?

The four men captured were born in Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon.

They all entered the USA legally, which means they must have been background checked, whereas the illegal immigrants we have here are unchecked.

Why is it that you beleive that legal migrants can coordinate bomb attacks, but the illegal migrants can't? Can you explain?

Sure, quick question first - what bombs specifically did they coordinate?

Pretty sure they release gas, you just have to light it yourself. We also have a log burner so will be able to do basic pasta/water boiling on the top of there.

In what situation?! Get a grip OP.

By drinking wine.

That’s my 3 day plan!

UnwillingAdvocate · 24/10/2026 14:55

And you think an attack that every person in the country is being told to stockpile for is only going to last three days? It’s called scare tactics. It’s an age old means of controlling the populace. Having people living in fear so that they stay compliant and don’t start rising up against the elite. They want us to all be fearful scared little people who are frightened all the time because it’s easier to control us. The establishment doesn’t like free thinking people who don’t believe it.

France has exactly the same 72 hour advice but it doesn't stop large swathes of the population taking to the streets whenever the government pisses them off. How exactly does taking some personal responsibility equate to behaving like a scared little sheep?

No one can be this stupid. A house fire can happen at any time. Have you heard of gas explosions?

Tescos is doing 25% off 6 bottles of wine so stocked up. Sorted.

Yup! I particularly like their middle Eastern ones

Mine don't. I was a bit pissed off about that because one reason I wanted the gas fires was for back-up in case of no electricity. But I do see the safety point.

If you have a log burner then you don't have much to worry about. It's people like me - the city flat dwellers who don't have easy access to stacks of fuel - who need to plan this carefully and think about how we'll manage without.

KookyFish · 24/10/2026 15:41

Wilfulignoranceabounds · 24/10/2026 15:31

My parents came here as legal immigrants, in the fifties, from the West Indies. They came here as British citizens. What qualified them as British is that their ancestors were brutally taken captive and enslaved by the British Empire. Generations of my ancestors, covering a period of at least 400 years, were shackled, branded like beasts, raped, sodomised, tortured, mutilated, murdered, starved and bred like cattle. But do tell us more about the dangers of illegal immigrants.

Incidentally, when slavery finally ended, compensation was awarded not to the people that were brutalised for centuries but to their owners. The owners were paid to give up their ‘property’. The slavery debt was finally paid off by the government in 2015… so as taxpayers, the British descendants of slaves, have contributed to paying that debt.

Surely you can see differences in legal and illegal migration?
I would expect legal immigrants to be astounded that they worked so hard and paid a lot of money to move here only to be inundated by people who jump on a boat and end up in the same position.

Bepo77 · 24/10/2026 15:37

In the spirit of facts...what bombs were used during 9/11?

You are right, they threatened that they had bombs on board, but of course the planes did the work, not explosives. Also, I should have said "identified" not "captured". My point still stands though!

JassyRadlett · 24/10/2026 15:41

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 24/10/2026 15:30

I'm curious - my gas cooker and gas fires all have safety cut-outs so they don't actually work if there's no electric power for the ignition. Do other people have mains gas appliances that will work without electricity?

Gas hobs will usually work if you light them manually, gas ovens won't. I suspect for other appliances it depends on the setup. Combi boiler generally won't work.

That's with fairly standard disruption - if it's a huge outage or long-lasting it might affect pressure in the gas grid.

Gall10 · 24/10/2026 15:42

I remember’protect & survive’ in ?70’s or 80’s when we were told in the event of a nuclear blast to hide under a table or put a mattress against the door.
I’ll take the current messaging with the same mindset as I did in the 80’s, feck it!

NotAtMyAge · 24/10/2026 15:43

sookiestjames77 · 24/10/2026 13:54

I have no idea! This is what’s confusing me. If it’s because of weather why do we need to prepare to leave?!

Far too many houses have been built in flood zones recently. A very wet winter, quite likely with an El Nino event, could lead to widespread flooding. A very bad storm could mean a lot of households without power, possibly for several days (Google Storm Arwen) Less likely, given global warming, is a very severe winter of frost and snow, but it can happen and I've known roads be blocked by snow for days. Having extra means of keeping warm seems to me to make perfect sense.

Then there are internet problems affecting services such as banking and supply chains. None of these are about war, but simply the unpredictability of weather and vulnerability of systems. We always keep a stock of tinned food, a couple of containers of milk in the freezer and flour and yeast to make bread. The only thing I'm about to buy is 3 days supply of drinking water.

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · 24/10/2026 15:43

I think there is a v high chance of major infrastructure disruption at some point so am starting to get some plans in place, first for 72 hours, then a week, maybe two eventually. Not panicking tho - just like to feel prepared just in case

Fires in October?! I’ve heard it all now

Electric fires start all year round and bloody ebikes charging catch fire quite often, a house fire doesn't have to be due to a wild fire and rarely is in this .country

Meadowfinch · 24/10/2026 15:43

OP, first, stop panicking.

The govt advice is only what some of us who live 10 hilly miles from a supermarket, have been doing for years. The world won't end.

In my 40 adult years, I've been snowed in twice for a day each time. We've had one 4-day power cut, one 7 day powercut, I've had a central heating boiler fail at 7pm on Christmas Eve, and I've had the main house fuse blow half way through cooking Christmas lunch.

Plus I got covid and couldn't go out for a week, and a similar bout of real flu. But that's in 40 years.

On each occasion I coped despite living in the middle of nowhere as a single mum.

My basic kit is bottles of water, UHT milk, coffee, pasta, pasta sauce, rice, lentils, tins of fish, veg, beans & fruit. Chocolate to keep DS happy. A rechargeable lantern for each bedroom, and the sitting room, tea lights/hurricane lamps as back ups, and a log burner, matches & sufficient wood.

If you don't have a log burner and the power fails, you can go to a friend or relative who has power, or somewhere public that has a generator.

The govt is not talking about armageddon, just to keep you & your family comfortable for the time it would take to get enough emergency food and water to you.

I volunteer for a parish council and we have emergency plans and funds to support people in the community if extreme weather/power outages cause issues. We did it during covid, distributing food to vulnerable people sheltering at home, and we can do it again. Honestly, try not to worry.

rainbowunicorn · 24/10/2026 15:43

Bepo77 · 24/10/2026 15:00

How can you not have critical thinking skills? You genuinely think the government is suddenly telling everyone to stockpile because of some storms in the countryside?

These baity, gaslighty replies are so annoying when it's the most talked about news item.

They aren't suddenly doing anything. The message is put out every year.

sparklypinkgoblin · 24/10/2026 15:44

The planes were improvised bombs.

MrsVBS · 24/10/2026 15:44

I think it’s in line with what other countries have been doing for a long time, in case of natural disaster or the banks going down and not able to use your card, if we get nuked ( which is highly unlikely) some wet wipes aren’t going to help you! Stop looking at the media if you worry, look how they reported COVID, live your life and don’t worry about something that might not happen.

Gosh, I was born in1960, I don’t remember that ! Although I would’ve been a teenager probably, so blissfully unaware !
I do however remember all the Aids public information, living in London. Although it was very much aimed at gay men so I felt I was invincible.

Yes, I should check whether the hob will work without power.

Catdoorman · 24/10/2026 15:49

You are drinking far too much water, you will be depleting your body of vital minerals and salts, being over hydrated can cause confusion and other serious problems, please limit yourself to 2 litres a day. I have over done it myself in the past and have suffered terribly with muscle cramps.

You reappy are deliberately obtuse. If you're bored then get off MN and start counting your tins.

Extreme weather events can happen all year round, you know full well many places were impacted by wild fires this summer. It's common sense to have items easily to hand if you need to leave your home quickly whether thats because of flash flooding or fires
