To be really scared by this messaging from the government?

As someone who really struggled during the pandemic this has really scared me. I have done a big order of hygiene basics to arrive tomorrow (12 x packs of wet wipes etc) and will be heading out for a stock up shop tomorrow to fill up on tins etc.

I’m considering ordering 12 of those water refills for water coolers and a pump that fits in the top, but I don’t know if that’s overkill. I alone drink 4-5 litres of water a day, plus cooking water!

I am really scared. How is everyone else dealing with this?

Advice, versus a high-budget, multi-channel, national campaign are two different things.

Yeah God forbid we increase our personal resilience in the face of serious weather events, cyber attacks on national infrastructure, and geopolitical uncertainty.

I honestly believe that the risk is much closer to home - thousands of illegal immigrants, who hate the West, are already here.....all it takes is a bit of coordination on their part.

Approximately 205,000 people (mostly young men) have entered the UK illegally since we started recording the numbers (in 2018), but it is estimated that there are over 700,000 here.

We have 73,660 full time soldiers in our Army.

If they decided on a massive scale attack, we are finished.

Oh do fuck off with this racist bollocks

Haven't they just said to use common sense and look at what is happening with weather, cyber attacks and power supplies and get a few days worth of supplies in??

It's in case of supply issues with supermarkets, for if you can't get to a shop or if there are power cuts etc.

It really is that simple . Except for the OP apparently.

But it’s not is it.

It’s not just “get some beans in in case it’s a crappy day”, they’re advising stockpiling water, power banks, having full evacuation kits ready to go!

A friend of mine has been part of the emergency planning and advised me last month to take stock of the advice and to get food and water in. They also advised that the messaging would move over to talking about cyber attacks too rather than just weather. However they advised that while the risk of cyber attacks is increasing there is no imminent threat that they are planning for. I feel reassured by this as this week’s messaging was all planned ahead of time. Many European countries have had this guidance in place for years, I think we are just catching up.

There have been some rather severe global cyber incidents over the past 48 hours.

One involving a vulnerability in PHP
code which is used extensively. A hacker found it and published details on a forum.

Another involving vulnerabilities in one company’s widely used digital security certificates.

AI Bots are constantly active looking for ways to breach security.

It’s just a good idea to be ready for this to impact any of our means of communication, utilities, banking, etc.

So, given the post I was actually replying to that said "no idea what you're worrying about???" 🤪 ...you think those things you listed are nothing to worry about?

I think some sort of large scale attack from Russia and or Iran is imminent.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Ny previous post about people being addicted to the adrenaline of thinking something major is going down, proven in one sentence!

I haven't chuckled this much in a while! Don't forget to get in little bottles of wine/spirits so you can barter for chocolate with your neighbours!

As a country we really need to catch up with others in terms of national planning. Most countries tell people to have enough stuff for 10 days in the event of bad weather or other emergencies. So, three days really isn't asking that much.

Having grown up in a country with more extreme weather and a higher sense of personal responsibility to be prepared and resilient I still find the mentality of some people here hard to understand and even after decades here I'm still caught out by it.

Govt: Sometimes unpredictable stuff happens. It's rare and the impacts can vary but there are some fairly straightforward things most people can do to be ready.
Some people: Great, that sounds sensible and proportionate, and there's some things on the list I hadn't really thought about.
Other people: Commence the Headless Chicken Dance! The Government shouldn't expect us to do this! Also they're lying to us! Also they haven't tailored it to my exact circumstances!

That we need to be prepared for some sort of disaster. They won’t say what sort, of course. But they want us to have handheld radios, torches, sleeping bags!!!

When did it say that ? All I’ve heard is get a wind up torch and extra beans in case the weather turns rough

Hang on. You mentioned Iran, and yet I am not allowed (in your head) to mention the Iranians that are already here, because that makes me racist, even though you highlighted Iranians as a risk factor first?

OOHH KKAAYY. 🙄

Get well soon.

I don’t think it can be much worse than an attack that stops life for three days to be honest

It can be a whole lot worse than that but, as you already seem to be panicking, I’ll spare you the details.

Namemechangey · 24/10/2026 15:11

if you research, the way the next global conflict will be fought is through infrastructure and cyber attacks. Coupled with climate issues, and the fact the government got rid of the UKs emergency food stocks a few decades ago, means that they are asking the people to create their own emergency supplies.. as they don’t have the budget or resources to supply us with things if there was such an emergency. Resources would go to those that can’t help themselves, so if you are able, put packs together. It takes the burden off the government if anything does happen.
but if a huge emergency was to happen, then you aren’t going to be living life like you do now, you would ration what you have, not be drinking 5 litres of water a day.

@blondeseaside sorry, so if that happened 🙄, you think only the army would fight back. not regular people? We would just sit in our houses waiting to be attacked? That's....wild

NimbleTaupeTiger · 24/10/2026 15:12

It's sensible to have torches, candles, tins of soup, bread and basics in all the time. We always have, my parents always did. I don't know if this is because we're babies of war children and they were just more prepared and it rubbed off.

I think this is more a message for the younger generations as they won't remember the power cuts in the 1970s or really anything except instant gratification and services that always work. Cut off the broadband now and you'd think the world had ended.

In the immortal words of Douglas Adams ...

DON'T PANIC!

You drink 4 or 5 litres of water a day?

That can’t be good for you.

What are the likely ill-effects of too much water, providing that someone is otherwise healthy?

I probably drink about 5 litres a day, mostly in the form of tea (approx 10 half-pint mugs daily), but also at least 1-1.5 pints of plain water and another pint or so of squash.

Most days I have a coffee as well, and sometimes a beer or two, do they count?

I've always drunk a lot, even as a child. I can remember having to stop for a drink at the water fountain on the way to and from town when going shopping with my mum. No-one carried water bottles around with them back then!

I have recently hear governmental talk about the risk of cyber attacks on the triple lock... and pensioners suddenly finding that the only way to survive is the eat their pets. #Labourbudgetnextweek

Fgs just think about it for a minute. We are entering storm season. Many houses get flooded and people have to temporarily go to sports halls or wherever. It makes sense to have passports, birth certificates or any other important information in one holdall which can be easily taken with you. My dad did this back in the 60s/70s in case of a house fire. Makes sense.
