AIBU to think we want rich people to live in our country…

…..as long as they pay their taxes?

Someone who earns £1million a year pays more than £500,000 in income tax - plus what they pay in local taxes, sales tax etc. According to the NHS, an average GP surgery costs c£350,000 to run each year, just to give that some context - and the high earners probably don’t use the nhs or state education, and obviously they aren’t claiming benefits.

Why is it that some people seem to wish these high earners, and high contributors, would go and live elsewhere?

Envy, inverse snobbery. It's terribly British.

I've never heard anyone wishing the sort of people you describe would go and live elsewhere. What I have seen is people expressing concerns about the very wealthy (the elite, not the people you describe) being allowed to hold us to ransom under threat of leaving if policies and laws are not made in their interests. Because this is a threat to our democracy.
I've also heard some understandable bluff calling, when higher earners frame themselves as carrying the rest of us and make noises about leaving if things aren't to their liking and how we'll all be sorry and such.
But actually calling for them to leave? Never seen that.

…that’s if they are “earning” £1m, but you’ll find plenty of wealthy individuals who pay nowhere near that, due to being clever with tax rules, business rules, inherited wealth etc.

“Trickle down” doesn’t really work ..Wealthy individuals already meet their basic consumption needs; giving them extra tax breaks mostly inflates savings or luxury markets rather than triggering a mass "trickle" to everyday workers

Giving Tax Breaks to large corporations doesn’t mean they pay workers more, it means they pay shareholders more.

This! Mostly bitterness and jealousy plus a sprinkling of naivety or lack of intelligence in not understanding the contribution of the millionaires.
