Andy Burnham is just a dumbed down version of Starmer

Just caught a snippet of some confident sounding commentator on tv repeating a line that you tend to hear in all news programmes. That Burnham is personable and has charisma. That line is starting make me think that as a country, the tyranny of low expectations has really hit a new low.

First thing’s first, when did saying ‘isn’t it’ after every sentence pass for charisma. Is the bar for charisma really that low.

Second, the guy’s failed upwards into a job that he’s clearly not fit for. His answer to everything is ‘Booses’.

The economy is on fire, buses. Immigration is out of control, buses. Crime is a problem, buses. We have the most expensive energy, buses. Industry and businesses are shutting down, buses.

He’s basically a small town mayor who accidentally became the prime minister because the quality of talent in parliament is non existent. Manchester is not a small town but running buses in Manchester doesn’t make you fit to be a PM. He was a failed health secretary, failed to be Labour leader twice when he actually had to have proper fight, somehow grifted his way to a mayor job for a decade. And yes his predecessors were any better. But why all the fawning over Burnham.

AIBU to think that we are headed towards a point soon when the public turns on him. He’s utterly out of his depth and the false shine will wear off in no time. A General election is looming.

All in all, so sad to see that this is the calibre of person at the top of government. What has happened to this country that no one smart wants to go anywhere politics.

Didn't one of those try and defraud HMRC when adding to her property portfolio? I was told one of the other cabinet women is a convicted criminal. They don't even bother to try to hide it these days.

One of my coworkers has a theory that everything will get much, much worse under Labour until the general public is totally ready to beg to be part of the EU. That is the masterplan... and that is why they are doing nothing about all the immigrants France is dumping here. They need to get it to be a lot worse...

I still don't comprehend Labour's way of announcing that they intend to keep women and children safe... by early releasing loads of criminals back into the environment. I feel like I'm living in Orwell's 1984. Make it make sense.

Yes it was Angela Raynor who failed to pay £40k stamp duty on a second property - an £800k flat in Hove (then Burnham made the sick and twisted decision to make her Housing Minister, no doubt wanting to rub it in our faces). Louise Haigh was convicted of fraud when she was mugged and said her work phone was stolen. She later found it but didn't inform the police. She's now secretary of state.

They're all up to no good, yet there won't be an ITV undercover investigation on labour as left wing ideologies have infiltrated ITV like so many other institutions in the UK.

I agree it does feel like 1984. The government has an agenda and we're just pawns in the longer game they're playing. We're living in a topsy turvy society where those who are corrupt, dishonest, lazy and incompetent get rewarded and those who are decent, kind and hardworking get punished. It's disgraceful.

OrganicDecafEarlGrey · 24/10/2026 14:43

I like him a lot. He's the first prime minister ever that I've felt actually cares about normal people and doesn't just think we're all brainless, worthless plebs.

TheRealSmurfette · 24/10/2026 14:45

Love Andy! He’s the breath of fresh air we need. Go Labour! 🌹🌹🌹

They won’t. They just won’t be able to get anything done, even with that majority. Same as Starmer.

Right, so there won't be a general election then.

I'm not sure you know what the PLP is thinking - unless you are an MP?

Burnham has a very different approach to internal party management. Time will tell if he can get policies through.

Still waiting to see a single policy the Burnham has enacted which is going to turn around the perilous state of the country. Not a soundbite, or some abstract set of words. A policy.

The first time buyer loan income cap will be revealed in the budget next week. This policy will help low earners onto the property ladder.
Triple lock going by 2030.
Social care total overhaul which will a huge impact on the running of the NHS saving money improving patient care.

Angela Raynor was cleared of any attempt to defraud. She had followed ( admittedly favourable) legal advice. All official parties accepted that she had made an honest mistake.

Her situation was complex, involving a trust that had been set up for her disabled child.

Abhannmor · 24/10/2026 15:19

Your post is just a string of clichés about him because he was the mayor of somewhere that's not London. Isn't it ?

Remember that useless con artist who really failed upwards? He used to larp as the mayor of London I think....

Don't worry be a general election come December or January.. Labour will be out. They haven't got a brain cell between them.

The irony of saying Labour don't have a brain cell between them and writing an illiterate post.

On a thread where OP accuses posters of being emotive while resorting to mimicking the Prime Minister's accent.

IamnotSethRogan · 24/10/2026 15:31

WarmHiker · 24/10/2026 12:48

In other news…. Heathrow 3rd runway is now as good as dead as a project, so says the boss of heat Heathrow. While Amsterdam and Frankfurt over take London as European hubs taking billions out of the UK economy. So the emissions will happen anyway, the flights will fly anyway, but at least the UK can feel good (and poor) about itself. And the Burnham thinks that the hub airport has nothing to do with him…..because apparently you can take a bus to New York instead.

Microsoft abandoned the data centre project due to energy shortfalls taking billions in investment elsewhere. So the data will centre will get built anyway, the emissions will happen anyway, but another country will get the tax revenue and jobs.

Anf it’s ok that billionaires leave because they are bad people. Never mind that the median earnings of the taxpayer is reducing showing that the bad billionaires and evil millionaires are taking their evil tax dollars with them.

Jack Daw will run out of gas in 10 years. Rosebank which makes an actual difference to energy production and UK tax take, is all but as good as refused. Because let the rest of the world produce oil instead. The warm glow of poverty makes up for it.

oh and the one thing we were actually good at….education standards per the league tables, is being dumbed down because according to Labour it makes kids feel bad if other kids are cleverer than them.

So there you have it. Everything is good because Burnham cares about the little things. Becoming an irrelevant and poor country is more than offset by something or other about parking fines.

So basically, he's not doing enough terrible, morally reprehensible, environmentally costly things ?

Thedogscollar · 24/10/2026 16:05

Well@WarmHikerhasn't been back to answer anyone. To be honest I tried to answer her but she lost the arguement when she was resorting to using Andy Burnhams regional accent as a point of discussion. Very juvenile behaviour.

Here's one:

Prime Minister Andy Burnham sets out plans for a new National Care Service - GOV.UK https://share.google/eWFtWmSb8vDKKsrVG

I'm presuming you'll maintain your principles and integrity by ensuring you'll receive no personal benefit from this initiative.

But then, maybe you're in a position where you'll never need to. In which case that does explain your dismissive attitude dressed up to look a bit like political thinking.

The PP said a policy enacted by Andy Burnham. The National Care Service is a "vision " or aspiration.

The report on what it might look like is not due until 2027 and if it is "enacted" it will only be done in phases.

Carouseloflife · 24/10/2026 16:55

Well, he’ll get my vote in the next election just for everything he said about Thatcher, including all the harm she inflicted.

But no “big” policy can be enacted in 100 days - which is how long Andy Burnham has had. Rightly or wrongly, that’s not how the UK parliament works. And, presumably, that’s precisely way the Prime Minister has at at least been pushing on with smaller- but nevertheless positive and popular- policy which can be enacted quickly, along side setting out his long term policy goals.

Problem is the time scales of some of this stuff. Will Labour never mind Burnham be in power in 2030 to get these done?

I feel we go round in circles and nothing gets done. In 2018 I was working for the nhs, must have been the Tories in power then. I got dragged off to a conference of some description where we spent the day discussing the new government announcement of a social care overhaul to basically make social care a branch of/mirror image of the NHS. Run in the same manner, would improve care, take the load off the nhs, etc. was in all the papers that week.

As far as I’m aware nothing happened. Just fizzled out, I assume due to the revolving door of prime ministers and obviously Covid would have thrown a spanner in the works but nothing was picked up after Covid.

i fear it’ll be the same here with this announcement of a social care overhaul.

I really like Burnham.
Am originally from Manchester and recognise that caring, intelligent, yet down to earth kind of person, which I grew up around. If he manages to do what he wants, the country will not only be better economically but also hopefully our mindset will be more positive.

And that's why the OP has set a spurious test for success.

WarmHiker · 24/10/2026 18:26

I suspect that if we were to go back and look at the posts where people were falling over themselves praising Starmer, we’d find the same people straining every sinew to find something positive about Burnham. And look how Starmer did.

Burnham will go the same way.

I see this a lot on here, and I do find it quite a bizarre viewpoint, but maybe it’s just that’s it’s so strangely Mumsnet centric. I wasn’t on here when Starmer was Prime Minister, so, maybe there were posters praising him effusively, but in the real world, his personal polling was never anywhere near as high as Andy Burnham’s has consistently been.

That doesn’t mean he’ll remain as popular as he is now forever - of course he won’t, that would be unprecedented in modern politics - but I don’t think the Starmer comparison really fits.

Brilliant that you have a plan that'll get it done sooner, I'm impressed. I suggest that you type it up quick and send it in. Yvette Cooper will be over the moon. How soon do you think you could get it all up and running, early in the new year perhaps?

Alternatively, you could have little think about what governments need to do to get stuff done.

You can take a look at it if you doubt the same praise was there. The op is right, but also the threads and posts are still there. The mn centric part was Starmer was better liked on here than in polling.

Labour leader has similar thoughts to previous Labour leader. Who'd have thought it...
