Andy Burnham is just a dumbed down version of Starmer

Just caught a snippet of some confident sounding commentator on tv repeating a line that you tend to hear in all news programmes. That Burnham is personable and has charisma. That line is starting make me think that as a country, the tyranny of low expectations has really hit a new low.

First thing’s first, when did saying ‘isn’t it’ after every sentence pass for charisma. Is the bar for charisma really that low.

Second, the guy’s failed upwards into a job that he’s clearly not fit for. His answer to everything is ‘Booses’.

The economy is on fire, buses. Immigration is out of control, buses. Crime is a problem, buses. We have the most expensive energy, buses. Industry and businesses are shutting down, buses.

He’s basically a small town mayor who accidentally became the prime minister because the quality of talent in parliament is non existent. Manchester is not a small town but running buses in Manchester doesn’t make you fit to be a PM. He was a failed health secretary, failed to be Labour leader twice when he actually had to have proper fight, somehow grifted his way to a mayor job for a decade. And yes his predecessors were any better. But why all the fawning over Burnham.

AIBU to think that we are headed towards a point soon when the public turns on him. He’s utterly out of his depth and the false shine will wear off in no time. A General election is looming.

All in all, so sad to see that this is the calibre of person at the top of government. What has happened to this country that no one smart wants to go anywhere politics.

I have rarely read an OP so misguidedly confident in how clever they sound.

I have, you said “small town” and “Manchester” twice - both of which are incorrect

The size of the city or the town is irrelevant, it’s the mentality that matters.

PurplePinata · 24/10/2026 13:35

I agree. I find him utterly revolting, the same with the rest of labour politicians. Tories weren't much better but I genuinely feel this country is fucked with this bunch of lying, corrupt, self serving fabiens in charge. Don't get me started on what I think of Milliband, Raynor and Mahmood or I'd explode!.

Andy Pandy is just taking the piss out of us to our faces - larking about on Gogglebox right after we'vd been told to stockpile for a possible catastrophe; bragging about how he's achieved a £2 cap on bus fairs and yet doing sod all about mass immigration (which it's now clear labour wants as immigrants = future labour voters). I've never felt so depressed about Brutish politics in all my 50 years of being alive. I dread to think what the future will be like for my daughter in this country.

TBF it is equally insulting and incorrect to suggest Mancunians have a “small town” mentality as it is to say their city is small.

No one is suggesting that.

it’s a way of thinking that is freely available to all towns and cities.

Yes, the Budget. Then we'll talk.

This government announcement to stock up on essentials and food before his budget comes out is very, very worrying.

I imagine it is fear mongering to try and get the left to accept some 'tough decisions' on defence spending over welfare spending.

But the OP does - very strongly - seem to be suggesting that the Prime Minister has a small town mentality, specifically because he used to be the Mayor of Manchester.

Didn't one of those try and defraud HMRC when adding to her property portfolio? I was told one of the other cabinet women is a convicted criminal. They don't even bother to try to hide it these days.

One of my coworkers has a theory that everything will get much, much worse under Labour until the general public is totally ready to beg to be part of the EU. That is the masterplan... and that is why they are doing nothing about all the immigrants France is dumping here. They need to get it to be a lot worse...

I still don't comprehend Labour's way of announcing that they intend to keep women and children safe... by early releasing loads of criminals back into the environment. I feel like I'm living in Orwell's 1984. Make it make sense.

The OP is so lacking in genuine critiques of the Prime Minister’s policies or politics, that they’ve had to resort to taking the mick out of their accent instead 🤷‍♀️

He has a small town mentality full stop. I think you are the one suggesting it has something to do with Manchester. Perhaps it’s your own bias that is showing.

Yes, that’s why I said the town or the city.

Or whatever. It doesn’t really matter.

You are nitpicking.

I think your mockery of his accent might have played into this.

Raiderofthelostbattenburg · 24/10/2026 14:04

If it has nothing to do with Manchester, then I’m not sure what the words, “running buses in Manchester doesn’t make you fit to be a PM” were intended to mean.

I’m also unsure as to what you mean by a “small town mentality” because in general usage, the phrase usually means a way of thinking marked by insularity, resistance to change, and a suspicion of outsiders, none of which seems especially in keeping with the Prime Minister’s outlook.

But maybe that’s my fault for trying to glean meaning in what was clearly intended as a bad faith, rage-baiting rant rather than an attempt to actually engage in genuine, good faith political debate.

Greater Manchester isn’t a town either. It’s not nit-picking, it is relevant to this thread so people need to get the basic facts right

Still waiting to see a single policy the Burnham has enacted which is going to turn around the perilous state of the country. Not a soundbite, or some abstract set of words. A policy.

JassyRadlett · 24/10/2026 14:17

As an aside, people dismissing transport policy as unimportant or tinkering or "parish council" or whatever is really so weird.

If you even scratch the surface slightly on the barriers to employment (particularly youth employment), regional economic development, housing and growth, you see how tightly entwined transport policy is with all of these at a systems level - and how privatisation and degradation of transport services has impacted all these areas.

Want to get young people into jobs, create economic opportunity outside city centres, support affordable housing and spread prosperity?

You're going to need some buses and some decent regional transport integration, no matter how unsexy you find them.

Livelovebehappy · 24/10/2026 14:19

I think most people haven’t accepted him as PM. He definitely wouldn’t have got over the line had he faced a general election. But we’re just resigned to the fact that we now have a puppet in power, at the mercy of the far to the left MPs who pushed him into place, and we just have to hope and pray that the next few years until the GE go quick, and that not too much damage will have been done. He seems a perfectly nice guy, who you’d probably be happy to have as a neighbour or your pub landlord, but as a PM he’s so much out of his depth, and doesn’t even try to hide it.

What's your view of the Green Book reforms? How do you feel about a Great British Grid to tackle energy connection issues? The pathway and economic analysis for the National Care Service, or water sector reforms? The current commitments in the devolution agenda?

I have various views of the likely impact and implementation pathways for some of these, but arguing that they're not fairly substantive for a three-month premiership is just a bit silly. And setting a test of "enacted" in a similar time frame makes you look fairly clueless.

Dollymylove · 24/10/2026 14:29

Be careful what you post OP. People are being arrested for criticising the government

Raiderofthelostbattenburg · 24/10/2026 14:29

I don’t think it’s correct to say “most people haven’t accepted him as PM”. On the most recent polling, he beats every single other political leader on head to head who would you choose to be Prime Minister.

Hope is not a plan.

Of course he has a plan.
You obviously didn't listen to his excellent speech.
Social care total overhaul
Devolution
Brexit
Cost of living
Housing.
You can look up the details as I'm not doing that for you.
