Would you be annoyed after this interview?

I applied for a frontline job with a charity. They were looking for people with lived experience, and I was invited to interview.
I wasn't an exact match for the job spec but thought the interview went well.
Ten days later I'd heard nothing back so emailed HR and they said I hadn't got the job, the rejection email probably went to spam (🙄 because when you're job hunting you never think to check your spam, do you?).
Of course, there was no rejection email there.
I emailed back saying no problem, thanks for letting me know. A week later, I saw they were looking for volunteers so emailed HR and said I'm happy to do some volunteering.
No reply.

I find the whole thing really rude and dehumanising and particularly bad as this is a mental health charity?

Annoying, rude and dehumanising, yes, but unfortunately fairly standard.

At least you got an interview. Most employers don't even bother to acknowledge an application.

NorwegianForest · 24/10/2026 08:10

Yes it's rude, unfortunately IME this is pretty common.

Likewhatttt · 24/10/2026 08:31

Really tempted to leave a Google review

Yeah it's bad isn't it. Especially as for this particular job, you had to fill in a multi-part form reiterating the exact same information they would have found on your CV...
I know it's standard these days, I just think their approach directly contradicts their mission.

I think its extremely rude to no reply once an interview has been attended.
I know and sadly accept that its standard ti not get an acknowledgement these days when you submit an application, but if someone goes to the effort and expense of attending an interview, common curtesy sats you should say yay or nay!!

Its a bit like employers saying don't submit AI assisted applications to only feed your application into AI.

Job hunting is awful these days.

Wistfultearia · 24/10/2026 08:50

That is rotten behaviour by the charity. They can't be too busy doing Important Things to spend 30 seconds sending an email saying thank you and sorry you weren't successful, or that they already have enough volunteers or whatever.

OtterlyMad · 24/10/2026 10:27

If you’re on LinkedIn then I would post about your experience there and tag the organisation! It’s one thing not responding to all applicants (still rude in my opinion though generally accepted); it’s a completely different kettle of fish not to bother informing unsuccessful candidates who have put the time and effort into preparing for and attending an interview. We need to call companies out more on this shitty behaviour.

Quite. OP, care to name and shame them?

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 24/10/2026 12:42

It’s very rude. When we do interviews at work I always reply to let people know.

Casperroonie · 24/10/2026 13:11

I wouldn't leave a Google review but I would write a polite and honest letter about how their approach makes people feel and how it isn't ok.

InvitedWho · 24/10/2026 13:15

I’m the chair of a charity and I would like to have this brought to my attention so I could hold the CEO and others to account on living the values of the charity. You could write to the Chair of Trustees c/o charity address or look them up in Companies House

Thr33lions · 24/10/2026 13:24

Was the volunteer position for effectively the same role as the paid position? I’m wondering if they perhaps have concerns over possible HR issues if they say no to paying someone and then yes to them doing the exact same thing for free.

Either way they should’ve responded.

its so common these days. I was job hunting for 2 years and have had dozens of interviews, some multi stage ones, that I’ve never heard from. I was even given an informal offer, that I’m still waiting to be confirmed 18 months later.

I had a very similar experience with a local mental health charity. Despite talking about my own struggles MH as a result of redundancy they completely ghosted me.

It’s so dehumanising.

anyone working in HR that allows this, should be throughly ashamed of themselves.

notanonly · 24/10/2026 14:12

This sounds like something the charity i used to for would do (thankfully i quit a year ago) it wasn't based on the wirral was it

I'm sorry you experienced this too. The only reason it's annoying me so much is the fact that they are a MH charity. It's so hypocritical. And when you're applying to a lived experience role, you're sort of baring a bit of your soul too!

Yes, it's common but shouldn't be. Along with waiting two weeks to hear from them after interview while they get their preferred candidate lined up but want to keep you in hand.

Cantfindafreeusername · 27/10/2026 09:36

Not surprised! Just because it runs as a charity doesn’t mean it acts like one! They are just big corporate companies irl! When I worked in finance lots of people left to work for charities as they paid Big money and had barely any targets just “get what you can” to get your bonus!! Sad and their loss when you genuinely sound like you want to help! Try local and smaller

JustAnotherWhinger · 27/10/2026 09:39

Places are appalling when it comes to recruitment now.

My DS had an interview in July 25. He heard nothing, despite chasing. He then got an email in MARCH about his start date and various details. When he contacted them to say “erm, I have another job now” they were downright bloody rude and had a whinge to him about unreliable candidates. Absolutely ludicrous
