Well what sort of standard is he working at? Is he non verbal, or is he a high IQ type, or in between?

Needmorelego · 24/10/2026 10:24

(I am assuming you're in England because I only know that system. Apologies if you're not)
EHCPs can go all the way up until age 25.
What age does his current place go to? I assume 19.
So he can stay there until 19.
After that if he still wants/needs college then if your LA is happy to fund him he can carry on up until 25.
Why aren't you having meetings?
Just ask them for one.

When did he turn 16 and when does the placement end? For end of Y11 transfer normally you'd have annual review in the Sept term so you can secure him a place in 16-19 provision which mainly happens next term for EHCP placements. AP may run on a different timetable. Organise a next steps meeting with his AP, she what they suggest, look on your local offer and at colleges if there is any prospect of him managing to attend one. Some colleges near us do level 1 courses in a different building with a really nice airy environment and classes of about 5 so relatively approachable even for DC who cannot cope with MS college.

LIZS · 24/10/2026 11:24

Depending on his ability and additional needs colleges may offer Lifeskill courses with embedded learning or level 1/2 courses if gcse not successful.

The EHCP can continue until 25, or 26 in some situations, if necessary. Although LAs often look to cease before then, but you can appeal if they try to.

You should still have annual reviews post 16. That includes the annual review meeting. If more regular meetings e.g. trembly MDTs are in F of the EHCP, they must still happen too.

You probably have an AR meeting at some point this term since the last one was probably in the autumn term of Y11 in order to comply with the phase transfer deadline. If this hasn’t been mentioned, look at when the AR is due and ask about the meeting.

As part of the AR, it is worth looking at the current EHCP, particularly the preparation for adulthood provision, to see what amendments are needed. PfA provision is often overlooked or skimmed by LAs, but there is so much to it.

Post 16, if DC are to move from one post 16 provider to another, the LA must finalise the amended EHCP at least 5 months prior to the move.

You say DS is at an AP. But your threads a few months ago were about appealing for a special post 16 placement and you were successful at Tribunal?

Minasama · 24/10/2026 11:34

I have no idea but has anyone talked about what kind of job he is capable of doing and where he might find such work? That would be my key focus. Or if he is really unable to do even the simplest type of work, how he will be housed in future and what financial support is available?

jeaux90 · 24/10/2026 11:37

Teen DD17 here with AuDHD and I’m having issues with this too. It really depends on the capabilities of your DC. Can you share a bit more?

x2boys · 24/10/2026 12:15

If he has an EHCP you should be having annuall reviews where these things are discussed
Does the alternative provsion offer post 16 provision?

The AP must offer post 16 because OP’s DS is already post 16.

It depends when he turned 16 ,he might be one of older ones in year 11.

He isn’t. OP posted extensively last academic year about her DS’s post 16 placement and appealing to SENDIST when the LA named a mainstream college when they finalised the post 16 placement.

Indeed. And she also had lots of advice about this on previous posts
