Boiler on the blink, how to keep warm

Having a bit of a mare today. Our boiler works on a hive system and hot water is on a timer. While our online hive says that the heating/water is on and the boiler has all its lights on and is making the firing up noises, there is no heating coming through the radiators or hot water through the taps. Luckily we have a log burner in the sitting room but I’m worried about the bedrooms and rest of the house now the weather is turning.

Obviously using loads of extra blankets on the kids beds. Hot water bottles too if needed. We can have a shower although we all prefer baths. I’m just stumped as to why it won’t come on! Have reset the boiler once and that did seem to work but then it stopped again. Will try and get someone out asap but i’m worried it’ll be costly.

Nobody here can say what the issue is - just call a heating engineer.

We also use Hive but are able to use the boiler independently when Hive went down. Have you checked to see if you can?

NotPerfectlyAdverage · 23/10/2026 23:31

Is it your pump? Mind your we have a hot water tank and condescending boiler so im probably wrong.

Cushionseams · 23/10/2026 23:33

Do you think it's the boiler, the remote or the app that's not working?
Mine will come on if I press the sender that's underneath the boiler if the remote isn't working.

The boiler seems to be working in that the light is on and it’s making a noise. The hive seems to be working because it’s saying the heating is on when it dips below the thermostat temperature. But no heat is coming through the radiators and we have no hot water. We obviously will be calling someone tomorrow.

Have you bled your radiators? What's the pressure in your system like (do you need to top up the water in the system), are your valves on or were they all turned off for summer on the radiators?

Just trying to think of the few obvious things I would check at my house but I imagine you've already checked these things.

Ours packed up last weekend. We aren’t covered by British Gas but called them anyway, they came out and fixed it. They also quoted us for a new boiler which came out around £4K but they offer finance options with 0% interest up to 36 months. Might be worth calling them!

I am having a miserable evening but your typo 'condescending boiler' has made me smile, thanks.

Maybe its my Freudian slip. My boiler is a bit of a arsehole and brakes down a lot due to advanced age. A bit like me

Just tell it you refuse to be patronised any more. Go NC if you have to.

Join Home Serve or the heating equivalent, waith the stated minimum time, then call them out.

I’m chuckling at the thought of a “condescending boiler”. 🙂 It took me a few beats before I deciphered it should read “condensing boiler”.

FreddysFingers · 24/10/2026 06:09

Have you checked the water pressure? Ours stopped working, but a quick top up via the filing tap on the boiler sorted it out 🙏

Yes my old boiler used to do this a lot and it was an easy fix - just opened a valve and let some air into the system and it would all click back on. But this boiler is relatively new and has no visible pressure gauge or valves so I don’t really want to tinker with it. Someone is coming out tomorrow - charging a ridiculous call out fee but we can’t do without it.

I had trouble with my hive this week. The app said it was working, the thermostat said it was working, the hub was green and connected but the heating wasnt working.

Evenrually discovered the hub was offline to the app (but showing connected and green). I rebooted all the devices and it all reconnected. The good old "switch it on and off again"
