To be worried about how he got scabies...

Throwaway username for this one.

DH works abroad for much for the year at the moment. He's had a rash recently that he thought was stress induced, but went to the doctor and was told it's scabies.

I googled it and see that it's transmitted mostly through skin-to-skin contact. The mites don't live very long off of human skin apparently (grossgrossgross) so I'm wondering how on earth he could have got it (and yes I KNOW some people will tell me he's definitely cheated or something, but I should say clearly that I've never had reason to be remotely suspicious or jealous or anything of that sort ever ever ever, it's the most ridiculous thought which is why I'm certain there has to be another explanation! He's decent and moral and kind)

He has no children, no caring duties, plays no contact sports... he's had a couple of mates to stay a few weeks ago but in a spare room, he does go to the gym (loves a sauna) but it's a nice one and apparently it's rarely transmitted from dirty towels and things anyway.

Do you know anyone who has had scabies?! How did they get it? Am I being unreasonable to be oddly worried about this...?

I'm not bringing it up to him unless I know there's a reason for concern because he's had a rubbish few weeks and doesn't need me being a weirdo out of the blue.

I got scabies when I was volunteering at a hospital in India, as a teenager. I was warned beforehand by the person organising the activity that this might happen.

Seziah · 23/10/2026 19:41

Yes and she got it from a hotel room in quite a nice hotel. I’ve heard that’s a fairly common place to pick it up and unless the rash is only around his cock I would assume he’s caught it from the bed in his accommodation

Catza · 23/10/2026 19:43

I had them as a child. No idea where from but one thing is certain - I was not having sex!
It could be as easy as a handshake which, I imagine, he is doing a fair bit of.

BrentfordForever · 23/10/2026 19:46

School mum and her DH got it from Airbnb (bed, sheets etc )

LauritaEvita · 23/10/2026 19:48

Yes, a whole student household I know got them. They definitely all didn’t have skin to skin contact as was a gang of mates coming in and out at different times. I assume it was passed on through shared towels, furniture etc.

Cocorico22 · 23/10/2026 19:49

I had it as a student in London and doctor said it was likely to have come from the tube. So I would say an innocent explanation is entirely possible!

🤣

I got it and then passed to dp. I know I haven’t been sleeping around - definitely must’ve got it from a manky hotel bed.

stef1969 · 23/10/2026 19:52

It's probably from bedding staying it hotels etc

concernedgrapefruit · 23/10/2026 19:55

OMG thank you!! I was googling it and asking ChatGPT (to my shame) and it kept saying it was unlikely to be from hotel bedding or towels or anything. The explanations it offered were: extended caring duties e.g. for an elderly person, lots of hugs with children, or contact sports like wrestling (which... lol, what a thought).

Sucks for him but he probably did get it from a nice hotel somewhere.

Feeling very silly now but loads better!!

Its not difficult to catch. I caught it once after a grubby pstient of mine held my hand for a few minutes. It was a proper arse to get rid of and itched like buggery.

Sunbringer · 23/10/2026 20:33

Well my dog got scabies and I doubt he was shagging anyone.

malloryknox123 · 23/10/2026 20:47

I picked it up in my early 20s working at a nightclub. It is ridiculously contagious and very difficult to eradicate.

don’t jump to conclusions about cheating as I certainly didn’t get it that way. The doctor said it can be passed on by handling money

WetBandits · 23/10/2026 20:52

I’ve worked in sexual health for six years and treat people with scabies 2-3 times in the average month. I can count on one hand the cases that have been sexually transmitted, if that helps!

Mamaof3monkeys · 23/10/2026 20:55

I got scabies after staying in a hotel. Upmarket hotel.

MixedBananas · 23/10/2026 20:56

As a HCP we always bleashed and cleaned rooms after Scabies patients and we put them at the end of the day to ensure cleaning could happen and no oatients came in after. It can be transmitted by clothes, surfaces etc. Sauna is 1000% likelyhood. Or cheating

TheThingOnTheIce · 23/10/2026 20:57

My friend and the rest of her family caught it after staying in a hostel

Best comment - hilarious

From a nurse friend who was supposed to have been cured, who'd caught it from a homeless patient.

She'd warned me, we sat at opposite sides of the table and carefully didn't touch. How the fuckers got to me I don't know. The only thing I can think is that she put my drink on the table when it was her round, but even then we didn't touch.

Since she'd warned me I knew immediately what it was when the itching started.

I got it a couple of years ago from my uni student son. I managed to give it to a gardening client via a mug. Fortunately, she was very understanding.
