To ask if any website is safe now and going online it's not the great thing they thought it would be?

Get online they said?
Everyone's pushed online
There are classes to help get you online.
Are websites really safe anymore though?
There seems to be more and more problems lately.
People hacking them, information being leaked, people trying to bring them down.
Not to mention the scams.

Are websites fit for purpose anymore.
I know someone not online and not interested .
Maybe they have got it right?

What's the future for online.
The harder we work to make them safer, won't there always be someone one step ahead.

Is this some sort of modern poetry? I'm old and don't understand this.

I was hearing it performed as an Angry Rap, but in the style of Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells.

Sounds like a Donald Trump monologue.

It's like asking are banks any use any more. Just because people try to rob them, doesn't meant that they aren't extremely useful or a really good idea.

And yet, here you are.......ONLINE

I get where coming from; but there seems no way to avoid being blind with most things we need in our daily lives. Banking being the main one. I run a business that could technically operate without the internet, but it would be 10 times harder than it is now. Swings and roundabouts.

Sounds like my mother who is an avowed technophobe, has never used a computer, doesn't have a smartphone and takes situations like this as "proof" that she is right that the internet is just for scamming and pornography.

There isn't a huge issue with the current potential vulnerability - it has been known about for 10 years, looked at quite seriously a few years ago, but it was considered that no-one would exploit it - it is the advent of AI as a tool to help hackers that has changed the status of the vulnerability...

this particular vulnerability allowed a hacker to get access to the server bypassing the usual software road blocks which build security - so it had the potential to be a big issue - however, it is an incredibly fast fix so businesses and government who took their websites down were perhaps over-reacting. I run hosting for my clients and our technical team had all servers patched while they carried on running...

equally, for many people websites behind a system such as cloudflare which intercepts bots and attacks were already protected pre-announcement.

so the vast majority of websites are fine - of course, as always you have to use your own judgement, anyone could build a dodgy website - much as any bar tender could note down or copy your credit card and then use it online... humans are mainly honest with some dishonesty...

there are far larger issues extant in the online / web world...

Thanks. Can't believe it was that hard to understand .

Loads of websites have had to taken down the last few days .
How do we keep one step ahead of the people who can exploit them?
.

What in earth does this mean. Of course I'm online asking. It's the future. How safe are websites now?
There always seems to be someone whose one step ahead and knows how to exploit them.

Mumsnet itself suffered a massive hack over a decade ago. Can still see my then email and then username linked on the dark web. And I presume the data stolen is still being sold to scammers looking at the spam on that account. So if you are worried, this is not the website to be on.

DO NOT USE THE SAME EMAIL FOR SOCIAL ACCOUNTS AS YOU DO FOR BANKING APPS.

DO NOT USE THE SAME EMAIL FOR SHOPPING ONLINE AS YOU DO FOR EITHER OF THE ABOVE.

Seems to need to be said often.
