Bloody Americanisms again

Advert for Alexa or whatever it is, about a bloke expecting his family and getting his swearing out of his system. Alex thing says 'I'll play some loud music so the neighbours dont call the cops'

We dont have 'the cops' in this country we have the police

Its bad enough teens refer to 'da feds' like they're little grimy New York gangsters, we dont need grown ups using stupid terms like 'cops'.

Plod is from Noddy I think. Dibble is from Top Cat. I've also heard Babylon, I don't know where that comes from.

'Babylon' for police = kind of a rasta thing (but more widely used - my brother and I say it sometimes 😂 We're very much not rastas.

LuciferOverLancashire · 22/10/2026 21:59

@OonaStubbs Babylon sounds like something maybe Jamaican/Rastafarians might say perhaps

LuciferOverLancashire · 22/10/2026 22:01

@OonaStubbs i call my sister Mrs Dibble because she talks as fast and relentlessly as she did on the police phone

Its a bit of a London thing although I dont say it, probably old fashioned now

Cops has never been shortened in this country. Cop shop yes. Cop, no.

Coppers yes.

Bobbies on the beat

The term "cops" has definitely been in use in the UK for a long time, and it continues to be a UK usage.

Fortuity · 22/10/2026 22:04

They're cops, the filth, or Plod in our house.

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 22/10/2026 22:13

Happy with 'Cops & Robbers' Just don't be getting us to say Cops & Home Invasioners'

Ifeeltheneedtheneedforcoffee · 22/10/2026 22:15

The bizzies. Also heard 5-0
Never heard feds but I know what it means
Cops is used. My ds best mate is in the police and he refers to himself and others as cops
I want to watch hot fuzz again now someone mention the fuzz - great film

BrickMaker · 22/10/2026 22:18

In Australia we say cops or 'the jacks'

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 22/10/2026 22:20

The feds annoys me but I have only ever heard it used over here by very young wannabe gangsters on the telly. See also fake Jamaican patois.
I do agree about americanisms in general.

If you are in Scoland it would be the Polis.

Yes. A lot of the neighbours in Glasgow called the station a copshop, though. And not recently, either, back in Taggart days.

Arlanymor · 24/10/2026 20:56

Definitely not just an Americanism... just finished listening to The Forgotten Dead podcast (episode six) and in an interview with a former police detective from Bolton he used the word 'cops' and in 1966 he'd been a police officer for three years... so he's not exactly going to have been influenced by American TV as much as by the colloquialisms of his career. So I'm convinced that cops (surely a shorthand for coppers) has definitely been in the UK for decades. Good podcast but the way, I recommend it.

Which London riots, the ones in the 80s? No one called them cops when I was growing up in the 70s.

Are you talking about modern day times?

Sorry only just saw this - no, not the 80s, I was only born in 1979. The riots were in 2011 - you must remember them:

But I've updated tonight in this thread because I heard someone use 'cops' in a podcast today and he was a police officer in 1966... so definitely not modern day!

Rozzers or the po po here. But if Happy Mondays can call the cops, I'm in.

That's what Eli says in Classic Emmerdale, Rozzers. Speculating you're from Yorkshire way?

Thats my point, modern americanism by then that your boss would have been using.

Wasn't my boss! And I refer you to my post before that about the podcast...

OneStarAwake · 24/10/2026 23:04

I thought this might be about the UK TV show The Cops. Which is from 1998. It was a brilliant series.

LuciferOverLancashire · 25/10/2026 08:17

I was watching Bosch Legacy last night and all the police were referring the themselves as Coppers.
